First time I've ever had a thread that filled up!
@PaperwhiteTheGhost Can't believe I forgot AG, it's my most hated hymn ever!

Let me tell you about our ‘one man band’ doctor.
He was a family friend as well as our GP. My dad was a farrier and the doctor had horses. Dad looked after the horses and the doctor looked after us. He delivered me, and was the only doctor any of us saw.

The best story is when my dad cut his hand open. Rather than going to the next town and to the big A&E we called the doctor. He said to meet him at the cottage hospital which was in a closer town. We turned up and the hospital was in darkness. The doctor turned up with a set of keys. Unlocked the hospital, put us all in a consulting room and sewed my dads hand up with me and mum watching!

He also did private work.

Dad went over to his a while ago and the doctor gave dad a bottle of whisky. The doctor used to get given bottles at Christmas by his private clients. One night dad and his friends drank said bottle. In the morning they checked what it was. It had been specially distilled for a royal estate. It was worth £3k.
He gave dad another bottle from his collection which dad has given to me. This was distilled for Cameron Mackintosh. It’s worth £5k.

DH is in the airforce and once had a CO who had come from a role in the royal household. He produced a bottle of whiskey at squadron party and the only cups the could rustle up were plastic one from the water fountain. It was only when clearing the debris the next day that someone clocked it was a bottle from the (late) Queen's personal batch. They were horrified that they swigged it out of plastic cups.
Mother in law still gives their family (NHS) GP a bottle of single malt at Christmas but it's a 50 bottle not a 3 grand one.

The Lucille actress has just confirmed she has left.

What a rubbish way for that character to leave the program. Really poor, imo.

TeamadIshbel · 01/03/2023 18:49

Oh no, that is rubbish. I'm rewatching earlier seasons atm and it feels like more recent plot lines don't match the quality of the earlier seasons, characters too. The Trixie wedding episode was awful, as is Mathew's acting. Sisters MJ & Jenny Agutter, Nurse Craine & young Timothy are the only blessed relief.

I know it's ridiculous

DreamingofNuneaton · 01/03/2023 18:54

I’d love a spin off about Monica Joan and colleagues during the blitz, the work they did then must have been incredible.

BrutusMcDogface · 01/03/2023 18:54

Young Timothy (sorry) is so annoying. He is cast really well, though, as his parents are equally annoying!

Oh, yes. This would be amazing.

Watching the old ones you realise how many people just vanished. Obviously main actors you can't always just bring back for a wedding but in general people vanish and are never spoken again. Fred could at least mention his daughter and if she came to visit wearing a different head then we wouldn't notice anyway.

Oh yes, that's right! What happened to Violet's son down in Plymouth?! Dissapointed Lucille has gone, what will happen with Cyril now, is he going to start his own soup kitchen or community space.....

KohlaParasaurus · 01/03/2023 19:01

At the beginning of an episode a few weeks ago Cyril gave some flowers to the woman at the desk in the dry cleaner's. I wonder if that's a hint of something to come.

TeamadIshbel · 01/03/2023 19:02

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 27/02/2023 11:08

Oh also Trixie's brother is so agonisingly, stereotypically gay. You just wouldn't be out like that in the time period unless you were Noel Coward.

Yes, I was expecting Christopher fecking Biggins to dance round the corner waving Widow T(wanky) jazz hands.....

LIZS · 01/03/2023 19:07

Yes kind of leaves Cyril in the lurch. Why bother to "send" him to Caribbean only to return alone?

TeamadIshbel · 01/03/2023 19:21

CornishGem1975 · 27/02/2023 19:56

I could do with seeing the back of the Turners but given who writes the show that's not going to happen.

Who? 🤔

I think it was usual then to call the step parent "mum" or "dad" we see it in other families too

As I've said I know it was normal then, it just makes me feel a bit uncomfortable.
When William calls 'Mr Tom' Dad for the first time it is one of my favourite moments in film (I see you Violet Buckle, I know what you did to that poor lad and his baby sister) it is clearly child led and joyous where as poor Tim has always felt a bit 'you have a new mother now so you can forget about the old one' to me. I always longed for teen Tim to go off the rails a bit and yell 'you ain't my muvver' at Shelagh.

The episode where Tim develops the film and finds the old photo of his Mum is the same one I think as when he then overhears Shelagh saying how she loves him, later on Tim calls her Mum. I think anyway!!!!

Remember the actress who plays violet buckle on soldier soldier, back in the day? Time flies!

Yes, loved that. Robson & Jerome and their singing career.

ImAvingOops · 01/03/2023 20:29

I always remember her character getting the girls to carry a big birthday cake to her husband who was in Australia on a training exercise and the wives flew out to surprise them. She couldn't go as she was pregnant. Anyway, when they got there, he was cheating on her.

As I was walking around my big city today, I wondered how far the midwives venture in Poplar. It looks like everything is a five minutes walk away (Violet's shop, the café (?), Nonnatus House, the Maternity Home), but they do bike so it's probably not? What do you think?

Toddlerteaplease · 01/03/2023 21:15

@TeamadIshbel Dr Turners real life

The original 15 minute cities. Though to be fair it was more normal wasn't it to have amenities close by before everybody had cars and started living away from work and big supermarkets pulled shops out of residential areas.

Indeed. I am reading books on how our part of town looked before and it's just like that, you had everything close by.

icelolly99 · 02/03/2023 13:47

I remember the Violet Buckle actress as the mentally ill / horrible Mum who locked the children under the stairs in Goodnight Mr Tom. She was terrifying.

MrsMitford3 · 02/03/2023 16:32

Ok I'm just going to say it.

I don't like Nancy. Or Sister Veronica.

I have just re-watched the whole series and it reminds me how much I love some of the departed midwives and Sisters-Jennie, Val, Patsy and Delia, Chummy, Cynthia, Barbara, Sister Evangelina, Sister Frances, Mother Mildred etc I even liked Jane.

It is very stark to see how much it has changed if you go back to the beginning.

Agree with PP re the spare Nuns.
You almost never hear them singing any more-used as a plot point to juxtapose with something awful happening

It's just too thin on the ground re staff and think it is starting to lose my interest.
Feels much more contrived how is St Matthew EVERYWHERE
and especially with the poor dead Lizzie in the last episode it is not the feel good nostalgic viewing l loved it for. Totally the wrong vibe.

And just saw now Lucille is gone? Terrible way to see her off!!

EasyLifer · 02/03/2023 17:57

I am very annoyed about Lucille. It was bad enough when Valerie left off screen but at least she wasn't leaving any on screen family behind. How will they explain poor lovely Cyril being abandoned?
