First time I've ever had a thread that filled up!
@PaperwhiteTheGhost Can't believe I forgot AG, it's my most hated hymn ever!

I also thought that the Poplar community might have had some misgivings about a street party when one of their neighbours had been tragically killed in the road only a few hours before.
Assuming that is that the police had even reopened the road? I know things were almost certainly different then, but I assume that even in 1968 they investigated fatal accidents in some detail. I was in an RTC a few years ago and the road was closed for absolutely ages. My DH went to try to get my personal belongings out of my car hours later and wasn't allowed anywhere near as the police were collecting evidence. And nobody had been killed in the incident, I think it takes even longer if there has been a fatality.I'm sure even in 1968 they didn't just sweep up the debris and carry on as if nothing had happened.
All very silly really. I'm not sure I will bother with the next series to be honest, and I've been a fan from episode 1.

TrashyPanda · 27/02/2023 14:04

Very good points, @AgeingDoc

IglesiasPiggl · 27/02/2023 14:05

I do wish they wouldn't try and pack in high drama to what's essentially a gentle, easy show. It happened with the train crash episode as well - they don't leave enough time for the dramatic bits and treat them the same way as when the cake runs out at Nonnatus House or someone unexpected delivers a baby. They could have totally dispensed with the road crash and the silly things going wrong - it would have been much better.

PuttingDownRoots · 27/02/2023 14:06

The whole car crash thing should have been its own episode.

CuriousMama · 27/02/2023 14:07

Exactly @AgeingDoc. It was so far fetched.

LilylilyDaisy · 27/02/2023 14:24

If that tiara had been stunningly beautiful, would Trixie have been tempted to wear it instead of the pillbox hat?!

I can't help feeling the decision was made easier for her because the tiara wasn't quite as pretty in reality as it sounded.

ArcaneWireless · 27/02/2023 14:30

I know this thread isn’t one for the swearing but I’m fucking raging.

They bloody ruined it.

That crash was all wrong.

And I was so ticked off that I nearly forgot to cry at ‘eyes like pennies’.

The Poplar rallying should have been everything. It wasn’t.

Sometimes you just want silly and happy.

And now I feel like I need a Nurse Crane bosie.

Good point 😂

I wasn't really paying attention (must've checked out early due to the dire plot devices) and didn't gauge the ugliness of the tiara. I thought Trixie was delighted and did momentarily think 'what about the hat?!'.

I googled something about the episode and apparently Olly Rix (St. Matthew) avoided seeing Helen George/Trixie in her wedding dress until she walked down the aisle. He thought it made his acting better/more authentic. Not sure about that one, surely as an actor you'd be able to express that emotion regardless 😂
He's wooden as anything in this role so I guess every little helps.

SirChenjins · 27/02/2023 15:52

@GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat He is awful, isn’t he? I can’t decide whether St Matthew, Dr Tosser, Nurse Simper or Vanessa Redgrave’s concluding warble is the most annoying thing about the show. Probably them all actually.

The things that redeem it are Nurse Crane (obvs), Reggie, Fred, the Nonnatus cake tin, Violet and the toning down of the teal.

TrashyPanda · 27/02/2023 16:15

I still love Sister Julienne.

and am fond of new nun too.

olly Rix can’t act for toffee and he and Trixie are so unconvincing as a couple. Mr and Mrs Woodentop were more realistic.

Trixie has never really come across as a dedicated nurse - she’s so superficial that all her sentiments seem flighty and unconvincing. And made more so by her faux accent. Out of all the nuns and midwives, she is my least favourite.

Soubriquet · 27/02/2023 16:34

looks like Lucille won’t be back

threeplusmum · 27/02/2023 16:37

The guy who plays Matthew has a certain James Bond look about him, but is uncomfortable to watch he's just not believable.

I think it's the constant syrupy music that wins the prize for Most Annoying Thing for me.

I don't understand that report. It says filming was halted due to "the medical emergency" - what emergency?

Wrong thread! Just in case you hadn't realised and need to repost.

Soubriquet · 27/02/2023 16:51

No idea but it’s a shame she’s not coming back. She was such a ray of sunshine

lyral · 27/02/2023 16:53

The tunnel in Poplar looked lovely. But as PP said, how manyof Matthew's friends/family would be sitting in a railway tunnel at night in the rain?

They travelled to Poplar for this too not a short distance. The reception was the final straw for me, partly for the reasons you mentioned. It was completely unrealistic and cloying and sentimental, and yet I'm used to that and suspending disbelief with CtM.

lyral · 27/02/2023 16:59

I like Sister Julienne and Nurse Crane, Violet and Fred.

Dr Turner is ahead of his time and surely up for a sainthood! Trixie's accent sounds too faux, as someone has said, and together (she and St. Matthew) they're the wooden tops.

Disappointing episode. I think we're due one more series in 2024, though I'm more tempted than ever to drop it.

Soubriquet · 27/02/2023 17:03

I used to like Violet….then she became a main character and now she’s not as nice.

Very abrupt, brusque and a know it all

LilylilyDaisy · 27/02/2023 17:20

Ah yes, I've remembered what I wanted to say earlier! I'd forgotten.

Why on earth were the Turner children not invited to the wedding?!

Shelagh made a point of saying to them when they were seemingly sulking about it that Colette was a bridesmaid and that's why she was going, but that doesn't explain why Trixie actively wouldn't want them as guests even if they weren't to be bridesmaids and pageboy.

Even Timothy got an invite!

I doubt Trixie would really have made it a "no kids" rule or even if she did, why not the younger Turner children, who are more than just a random collegue's kids. They've shared all sorts of occasions in and around Nonnatus House. I really didn't get why they wouldn't be invited.

Soubriquet · 27/02/2023 17:23

Maybe it was a no kids really. I mean the only children I could see was Collette and Johnty

LilylilyDaisy · 27/02/2023 17:28

I think they should have just let Trixie have the society wedding we were all expecting. Like a PP said, there's been plenty of Poplar weddings, so a society wedding would have made a visual change (and plenty of scope for amusing moments).

Also thought that Fred might have walked Trixie down the aisle.

I think when the Turner children complained Sheila said Colette was only going because she was a bridesmaid.

Soubriquet · 27/02/2023 17:34

Yes and it looks like Jonty was best man

OttersMayHaveShiftedInTransit · 27/02/2023 17:39

and the little pill box hat (can you really make one of those at home?)

Yes you can! My mum made most of her own clothes in the 60's and was not averse to knocking up a matching pill box hat when they were the 'in' thing.
