First time I've ever had a thread that filled up!
@PaperwhiteTheGhost Can't believe I forgot AG, it's my most hated hymn ever!

I know. So dreary.

Also on my anthem shit list is A Gaelic Blessing and most things by Rutter (Love his Christmas music though)

We loved it when someone got married and asked for suggestions and we got to do better hymns and much better anthems. I Was Glad ftw!

Toddlerteaplease · 26/02/2023 21:58

Was that the Anthem, or where you glad they chose something else. (Just realised how that Debra be actually fits the tune)

It's the Anthem. YouTube it, you won't regret it!

Continually typing the word "anthem" had got Goid Charlotte stuck in my head!!

Is Nancy actress pregnant?

PriamFarrl · 26/02/2023 22:04

That was all just stupid. I get what they were trying to do, to say that although Trixie is now a Lady she was still very much part of Poplar and had touched many families. That she didn’t need a big fancy do and that the people of Poplar would come out for her.

But, they could have done that without so many stupid things going wrong. The thing with the suits was unbelievable, like not one of them had tried them on before the morning. Then the deal with the cake and the flowers, Nancy’s nose bleeds, the missing tiara, all stupid things that kept going wrong for no reason.

What should have happened is the fire at the hotel happening at the day before, and then it would have been more believable that they could suddenly scare up dozens of champagne glasses in a nunnery.

HappyHolidai · 26/02/2023 22:04

I think there's a lot to be said for hymns that lots of people will know, at weddings & funerals. Nothing worse than a few people making an attempt but basically a congregation looking confused & willing it to be over.

I was in a church choir where the couple wanted us to sing Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen). Thankfully they were talked out of it - highly unsuitable!

LilylilyDaisy · 26/02/2023 22:08

Someone was asking about Shelagh's dress, I imagine the costume department might possibly acquire some original vintage sewing patterns, and make the outfits. There are many vintage patterns out there and they would obviously be exactly true to the precise year.

I was very disappointed Lucille didn't reappear. I honestly thought she would! Has she really gone forever?! I do wish she had arrived back for the wedding, it would have been wonderful.

I thought Matthew was saying the tiara had been sold to pay for a six week cruise for his sick father, but then he does have the tiara after all in the end?

I loved Trixie's wedding look, but I was surprised the wedding dress was made in a textured fabric.

I did raise a few tears during the roadside caesarean, in particular when Shelagh addressed the mum as normal, telling her about the baby. Sad

Toddlerteaplease · 26/02/2023 22:11

@PaperwhiteTheGhost I know it well and completely agree with John Sentamu, that when you hear it, you enter in to glory. I love choral and church music.

Yes, that got to me too. It would have more poignant had it not all been so much like Dallas or Falcon Crest up to then.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 26/02/2023 22:12

I hated the RTA being shoehorned in as a plot device at the last minute. Completely unnecessary and took the shine off Trixie's wedding plotline. The juxtaposition of the Turners going on to celebrate like nothing had happened was unrealistic and callous. I know they're in the medical profession but they weren't remotely subdued 🤔

I don't see how they would've had time to go home and change and still make it to the wedding. They're fictional characters but it felt like such a disrespectful storyline and unexpectedly graphic.

The food van/courtyard aesthetic of the wedding reception didn't seem very realistic either, and a bit modern 🙄 Would Matthew's upper crust guests really have made the trek from Chelsea to Poplar? I guess it didn't matter since they had their close friends and family and half of Poplar to make up the numbers.

I disliked Trixie's dress. Maybe it was
of the era/social class but it made her look rather matronly. She's always been impeccably dressed and prides herself on attention to detail and tailoring and yet the bust/bodice was too tight and the thick fabric did nothing for her. A bit disappointing all round 😂

I rather enjoyed the Series of Unfortunate Wedding events.

Shed s tear at the mum dying.

Thought for a fleeting second it was Sister MJ on the scooter!!!

Bit disappointed they didn't go full on reunion and have Patsy, Delia, Jenny, Val, Chummy et al all there. (Plus the nuns!!)

I was hoping for some familiar faces too!

LilylilyDaisy · 26/02/2023 22:16

Also loved Nurse Crane cracking and showing her more vulnerable side. Poor Nurse Crane, losing Barbara, and Lucile, and Trixie now going off as a married lady, plus Patsy and Delia etc. She's always been the reassuring strong presence for so many staff and patients, and it was nice to see Sr Julienne able to offer some reassurance back to Nurse Crane.

I have been an avid watcher since the start (and before that I was a fan of the books when they first came out) and I felt strangely almost proud of Trixie getting married, remembering all her ups and downs over the last 10 or more years!

Toddlerteaplease · 26/02/2023 22:18

Completely agree about the C section. The last thing they'd have thought about was going to a wedding. Incredibly disrespectful behaviour, especially for a ex nun. And someone who's still pretty devout.

I looked up the poem. It's really beautiful but much shorter they Sr mJ's version. I wonder if the BBC have released the full text.

I thought Sister Julienne might have been telling Phyllis that there would always be a place at the Mother House for her.

Nonnatus House is her family really. They look after Sister MJ... but it must not be as rosy for an elder civilian nurse.

Soubriquet · 26/02/2023 22:25

I posted this as the last post in the other thread

Watching now….

Ive been watching the old seasons on Netflix…just finished the one with the twins married to the one husband Maevis and Meg.

The never series never held up to the earlier ones, but it does seem to be going down hill rapidly

Phyllis won the pools, plus she must save most of her earnings, so she would be likely OK in her old age (in terms of living etc). I don't think Phyllis could live out her days in the Mother House, not being a nun.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 26/02/2023 22:30

Would Matthew's father really have had to sell the tiara to afford a 6 week cruise? I understand it was a luxury cruise but he was pretty well off with property assets and disposable income. Did Matthew have any siblings? I was of the impression Matthew was the sole heir to the dynasty.

The tiara would've had sentimental value and precious jewels don't exactly depreciate.

I could understand him selling it for other reasons but not to raise funds.

Soubriquet · 26/02/2023 22:32

Well….what the hell was that?!

Toddlerteaplease · 26/02/2023 22:34

What a pile of shite.

AgeingDoc · 26/02/2023 22:43

The RTC/perimortem c section by the roadside was completely ridiculous on quite a number of fronts, not least the improbability of instant death of the woman - with minimal signs of external injury - whilst her husband had nothing more than a bitten tongue? It tends not to happen that way.
Not to mention the amazing condition of the baby. Not very likely that a baby delivered after her mother had been dead for several minutes would have been perfectly healthy at birth! And yes, the way the Turners just got changed and headed off to the wedding like nothing had happened...as if!
It was an just unnecessary storyline that added nothing to what was otherwise a a rather silly but fun episode.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/02/2023 22:46

@AgeingDoc hypoxic brain injuries, do not appear to happen in Poplar. Lots of babies born in poor condition, or with long downtime. No seizures or other effects noted.

I was a bit disappointed with this episode tbh. A fatal car crash has no place in a happy wedding episode. And after all of Trixie's ups and downs, she deserved her posh wedding reception. Some minor things going wrong (like Clodagh's nosebleed) was fine, but not a fatal car crash and a hotel fire.

I thought it was strange that none of the ex-midwives made an appearance - especially Jenny and Chummy.

Poor Phyllis! I was remembering back to the wedding episode where Barbara asked her to be bridesmaid (or maybe it was Matron of Honour) and Phyllis was so happy that Barbara chose her over the younger girls. I still miss Barbara. Loved that carousel scene.

The 'something blue' was a nice touch and I liked the way there were two pieces of material - a piece from the nurses' uniform and a piece from the nuns' habit.

I rolled my eyes a bit when Saint Matthew saved the day. But it was on the cards really. And good to know there will be some new student midwives. We need some new faces. It's only a matter of time before Trixie is pregnant.
