I didn't call you racist. Everyone can be guilty of an unconscious bias - race related or other.
It is a bias if girls of a certain colour are readily labelled aggressive, ridiculously angry etc but other girls who show similar behaviour get a pass. Tanya is no more angry than Samie, even if Samie is more likeable/liked.
Zara was far more chilled than Faye from the previous serious who exhibited some of the most worrying behaviour I've seen on TV and was borderline violent toward Teddy from what I saw, so I hope you were consistent and called Faye very aggressive, face contorting etc

I agree, it’s shocking to see some people who defended Faye criticising Tanya. In general there is a lot of unconscious bias which means the black contestants are judged far more harshly which is apparent in online discussions not only on mumsnet but Facebook etc.

For the record I think Zara was great but both Tanya and Faye have treated the men they’re with appallingly. Tanya doesn’t have such anger issues with Shaq as Faye did with teddy, and is less aggressive but she’s playing mind games with him, gaslighting etc. I got the feeling she didn’t witness a healthy relationship growing up when she thought it was acceptable to tell Shaq off in front of Lana because the way he spoke to Ron. Silly girl… If the situation were reversed does she think Lana would give Ron a dressing down in front of her for arguing with Shaq? Tbh I knew the relationship was doomed from that point onwards. As a couple you need to be on the same team. She needs to grow up and reflect on her behaviour.

Olivia is the very worst in Love island history IMO and good point to the pp who said her face doesn’t contort because Botox 😂 she acts delusional but is very calculated, if she doesn’t like someone she will do her best to bad mouth them and enlist others in her campaign against them, classic bully behaviour. I believe this is why love island is opening the vote to the public, they know she would be at risk and they want to keep her out.

Kai and Sanam are the smartest in there and they have got the measure of her. Kanam to win! Gorgeous couple :)

Thanks for your comment, and that it's not just me who sees these inconsistencies.
I don't agree with Tanya's treatment of Shaq, but it is a separate thing to call her aggressive or angry compared to current and past inmates islanders 😂

Twonewcats · 25/02/2023 11:14

I actually feel like Tanya is rarely "angry" at Shaq at all - she just calmly tells him he's wrong, regardless of what has happened and what's been said

I was commenting purely on her attitude during movie night.

OK? I wasn't.

The above discussion about Tanya being angry was because of a comment I made. I was just clarifying I'm not saying she's an overly angry person in general.

I see.
Yeah, she's more calculated than angry usually

I think a PP mentioned she may have witnessed some bad relationships in her life? I'm wondering if it's more that she's been terribly spoilt and is used to getting her own way.

Were you on threads from earlier series?

Did you see the comments about Faye?

Because comments about anger and aggression aren't limited by colour. But are applied to any Islander, regardless of colour, when they are regularly showing those characteristics

LikeTearsInRain · 25/02/2023 12:38

Samie was just as aggressive and face contorted and sound more ‘street’ when angry during movie night. On a par with Tanya.

LikeTearsInRain · 25/02/2023 12:38

In fact Tanya seems more eloquent when angry compared to Samie.

I wasn't on the thread when Faye was on, granted

However from this series I have noticed that only girls of colour have been labelled aggressive, even though as @LikeTearsInRain observed, Samie has been just as angry and street-sounding.

Not trying to make it about race, but just to highlight that unconscious bias can often play a role in how some islanders are perceived.

Tanya is a champion gaslighter! I don’t think being more eloquent when fighting Ileana she’s any less angry. Although I wouldn’t call Tanya eloquent anyway to be honest. She’s coming across as a very nasty person.

I saw a hint of Claudia having the potential to fight when she said to the Casa girl ‘Don’t you start on me’. That’s the sort of attitude, most people take a big step away from, if standing anywhere nearby on a night out.

Nah, Claudia was right to snap back, as she was being accused of laughing at their upset, when she totally wasn't. It's maybe a northern turn of phrase - I'd have said similar (Scottish), but it definitely wouldn't have been with the potential to fight!

I will re-watch. Tbf though, if I missed that, it was purely down to the fact that Samie had the right to be pissed off - Tanya didn't. Plus Samie isn't well spoken in general, so I wouldn't have noticed much difference.

Rollergirl11 · 25/02/2023 14:09

I was on the LI thread when Faye was an islander. From what I remember the majority of posters found her behaviour aggressive and totally unacceptable and a lot of people thought she should have been removed from the villa following her movie night outburst.

Exactly
Which is why I agree with @Lemonande said about ‘unconscious bias’
Even when Tanya had an issue with Martin calling her a liar, I didn’t feel that she was aggressive in the slightest. There was no face contorting or whatever was mentioned.

The fact is that she wasn’t removed despite her appalling behaviour.
I am not sure that a black contestant would have been given the same grace tbh

Rollergirl11 · 25/02/2023 14:21

And from memory there have been a number of white female contestants who have shown snippets of aggression and questionable behaviour. Kady McDermott was pretty volatile and almost had a physical fight with another islander (who was actually removed) and Olivia Atwood certainly had her moments too.

LikeTearsInRain · 25/02/2023 12:38

In fact Tanya seems more eloquent when angry compared to Samie.

There's a massive difference in how Tanya and Samie argue though

Samies saying how she feels. Yes she's angry but she's just saying how toms actions have made her feel.

Tanya's denying not only what happened but how Shaq feels. She shuts him down. She's basically not allowing him to feel a certain way because it makes her look bad.

I can't stand her. Her and Olivia are fucking with peoples heads. And I really don't know how they allow it in the show as it's so damaging.

Fwiw I also thought Faye was incredibly manipulative. She should have been thrown out too.

Rollergirl11 · 25/02/2023 14:25

You are absolutely right, she most definitely should have gone. As I mentioned in my last post there was a past female islander removed but I can’t remember her ethnicity. But that interaction got physically violent so was the right decision.

I do think that she has been spoilt. I think that she may be an only child.

beastlyslumber · 25/02/2023 14:41

Tanya does get aggressive - she gets loud, raises her voice, talks over other people, shouts and walks towards them pointing her finger etc. Olivia is also quite aggressive in how she confronts others and makes statements about how she's "not having it" etc. Tanya when she lets her mask down does look quite different.

Samie isn't really aggressive in my opinion. There's a difference between expressing anger and being aggressive. Samie tends to walk away when she's angry.

She didn't say 1 word when Martin confronted her, but when he said the same things in earshot of the others she absolutely did show aggression towards him.
