The fact is that she wasn’t removed despite her appalling behaviour.
I am not sure that a black contestant would have been given the same grace tbh

I'm sorry, but this is pure speculation. Stop turning this into a race issue for your own agenda when it's not.

I WAS on the Faye threads and so many posters- including me- said over and over she should be removed. Black/ White/ male/female/ non-binary/straight/ gay/ whatever you like if you're aggressive, you're aggressive, it's about your personality.

FWIW I work with teenagers and in my extensive experience (28 years), the wee, white, nippy, argy-bargy, aggressive madams/ troubled youths FAR outweigh the black/brown kids who act similarly. Actually, at the minute I see NO faces of colour in the corridor regularly in trouble.

No unconscious bias here at all.

Zampa · 25/02/2023 15:15

Just to weigh in on the Black girl issue, I think the producers have actually handled it better this year, in that they've found guys who actually really want to date UK ethnic minority women.

There will always be unconscious bias in life and it's right to call it out where we perceive it happening but it's very difficult to police/understand intent and attitude on these threads. We should just all use this as a moment to reflect and then get back to calling Olivia a bitchy cowbag, which is obviously fine!

Kai and Sanam for the win!

Lampzade · 25/02/2023 15:17

I think some posters really need to read up on the definition of ‘unconscious bias’ before they start getting their underwear in a twist .

Tanya is a champion gaslighter! I don’t think being more eloquent when fighting Ileana she’s any less angry. Although I wouldn’t call Tanya eloquent anyway to be honest. She’s coming across as a very nasty person.

I saw a hint of Claudia having the potential to fight when she said to the Casa girl ‘Don’t you start on me’. That’s the sort of attitude, most people take a big step away from, if standing anywhere nearby on a night out.

I never said Tanya was in the right. I think she’s very much in the wrong. But when arguing she is more level in how she talks and less abravsive/aggressive compared to Samie. However oddly has had comments aimed at how she argues, alongside Zara.

LikeTearsInRain · 25/02/2023 15:29

justhaveahalf · 25/02/2023 14:22

There's a massive difference in how Tanya and Samie argue though

Samies saying how she feels. Yes she's angry but she's just saying how toms actions have made her feel.

Tanya's denying not only what happened but how Shaq feels. She shuts him down. She's basically not allowing him to feel a certain way because it makes her look bad.

I can't stand her. Her and Olivia are fucking with peoples heads. And I really don't know how they allow it in the show as it's so damaging.

Fwiw I also thought Faye was incredibly manipulative. She should have been thrown out too.

Again not saying Tanya is in the right at all. She is a gaslighter. But when comments seem to focus on islanders of an ethnic background that their “face contorts” and “voice changes” when angry (sorry but surely everyone has an angry face and an angry voice unless you are loaded with Botox or very self controlled) and there are constant suggestions that those islanders are aggressive, when other islanders get angry and change when they do so (e.g. Samie shouting last night) and no comments made. In fact Tanya is in general very level headed and calm voiced in general when arguing, she is just completely in the wrong, deluded and manipulative!

Thats all. Let’s hold everyone to the same standard.

LikeTearsInRain · 25/02/2023 15:31

@Zampa yes please, let’s get back to Olivia being a narc and rooting for Kai and Sanam as the best of an awful or boring bunch 😂

I do think Kai and Sanam make a good couple - but I don't feel we have seen enough of them. When you do see them they are laying together on a sun lounger. I just don't feel they have earned the win... but maybe that's me being unfair as it might have just been manipulated that way. Have never thought that Kai brought much to the party anyway. It's a tricky one.

I think inevitably it will be Ron and Lana that win. They had their 'troubles' earlier on. Lots of people will like their 'journey' but let's face it - she's lovely but not got much about her. Beautiful to look at but a bit 'meh' otherwise.

Not sure about Will and Jessie. I guess they could be in with a chance if their journey reverts to plain sailing but not sure it will.

Olivia is just Olivia and I don't think for one second she's into Maxwell.

Shaq and Tanya - he's completely fallen for her but I don't trust her. I was surprised they were back together so quickly after movie night.

Casey and Claudia - heading for a split. He's a complete player - I do the same job as him and have come across a million of his type over the years. Transparent.

Tom has grown on me and I do like Sammie but just not really feeling it.

Excuse me? Can you please quote where I'm aggressive? Where this tone is coming from? Which words/ phrases exactly are you referring to?

You see, I was just yesterday teaching how to answer tone questions in the language paper in Higher English (Scottish A level), so I'm interested in your evidence.

Note: telling someone to 'take a chill pill' is inflammatory in itself.

CellophaneFlower · 25/02/2023 16:17

I find this whole "unconscious bias" really patronising. It's like you're telling me I'm something because you've decided I am but I'm not aware of it myself. I cannot defend myself as I haven't yet realised what I'm doing.

Both Zara and Tanya completely changed in the blink of an eye, that's why I made the comparison. Zara's voice especially changed ridiculously. Both reacted completely unreasonably imo. I'm not going to comment on anyone who is getting angry and reacting to seeing something upsetting eg Samie.

If my memory wasn't as shite I could no doubt list loads of previous white islanders who have also acted appallingly. Every time I make a comment about a black contestant do I have to balance it out with a bad comment about a white islander so i don't look like I'm being prejudiced?

Chasedbythechaser · 25/02/2023 16:19

beastlyslumber · 25/02/2023 14:41

Tanya does get aggressive - she gets loud, raises her voice, talks over other people, shouts and walks towards them pointing her finger etc. Olivia is also quite aggressive in how she confronts others and makes statements about how she's "not having it" etc. Tanya when she lets her mask down does look quite different.

Samie isn't really aggressive in my opinion. There's a difference between expressing anger and being aggressive. Samie tends to walk away when she's angry.

I agree with this.

Id add though that Olivia shows typical bully behaviour, manipulating and isolating certain people.

Tanya is the personification of gaslighting. She is displaying very nasty and very damaging behaviour.

Their behaviour should be shown in schools to teach kids how to recognise this behaviour.

Neither of the above two are anywhere near as good looking as others in the villa.

I think it's a good reminder of how people can look at the same thing and see it totally differently! Some people love Will - he's always given me the utter ick. Some people think Claudia is sweet and gorgeous - I think she's kind of basic and not very interesting. Some people think Tanya is sticking it to the man - I think she's a narcissist and emotionally abusive.

None of us are wrong or right (well, I'm right, obviously!) but it's fun to discuss and dissect the different personalities on there. If we start accusing each other of bias and racism when we disagree, it just causes division and upset. People just disagree and have different perceptions of things. Also, remember that we are seeing the edited highlights of a tv show. We're not seeing these people in their usual environments, uncensored and unfiltered. So whatever perceptions we have, they're all going to be faulty in some way.

At this point, the LI threads are way more entertaining than the actual show. So can we not ruin it with a big ruck?

It's also very boring to keep seeing suggestions made that certain islanders are aggressive, contorting their faces and behaviour and what not, while excuses are made for other islanders who exhibit same behaviour.
You may think you do not have any bias, that's the whole point of it being unconscious Hmm
More than happy to move on, hopefully will see more of the same standard being applied to all islanders.

HundredMilesAnHour · 25/02/2023 16:49

I personally made no comment about anyone contorting faces. As Cellophane explained, this whole accusing others of unconscious bias is so patronising. You know nothing about any of us. In essence anyone could accuse another of unconscious bias about anything (race/sex/ sexuality/ appearance) and there's no right to to reply because we're simply 'just not aware of it'. Nonsense.

I've always taken people as they come: I have friends and colleagues from wide and varied backgrounds, their colour has never made me think they're more aggressive (or any other characteristic) than anyone else. However, I'll be sure to tell my mate when I'm out with her tonight that due to the matter of me being white I'm unconsciously biased towards her at all times because she's black.

I'm sure it's a recognised phenomenon, but you can't come onto an anonymous forum and just accuse folk of shit because you feel like it.

Sanam and Kai for me. They seem sweet together.

I like Tom but I do worry that this is all a bit too much for him. I think he's quite sensitive and the producers need to keep an eye on him. At the end of the day, these are young people and its not nice being so mean/using derogatory language in respect of them.
