They're not enclosed by glass that I can see?

No, you're right. Was looking on my phone earlier and picture 20 looked like they were. Ok, back to saying they're a death trap then.

I agree - the stairs themselves aren't enclosed in glass, only along the upper floor. I'm surprised as I thought (from watching Grand Designs!) that there had to be a bannister of some sort for building regs.

Cocolapew · 22/04/2023 12:51

I've just watched the C4 one and enjoyed it, at least they are doing it to their own personal taste, but AJ is a bit much.

@Cocolapew I've started a thread on it .

FeltCarrot · 22/04/2023 15:26

So “Japandi” is a thing? I thought Jack came up with it but it’s been mentioned on the C4 programme too.

freyamay74 · 22/04/2023 16:11

Japandi is indeed a thing, quite a minimalist simple look with nods to Japan. It was quite departure from what the client asked for but overall looked ok

And Scandinavia.

freyamay74 · 23/04/2023 08:02

It's sort of IKEA meets Japan!

I must admit I don't feel very excited by the prospect of the final. It was a mistake to keep Monika in against just one other; surely she can't win? Not after ignoring all advice and turning out vile plastic flowers again! All against the predictable backdrop of black. Plus of the course the failures with timing, budget and now not calculating how much paint for the ceiling. It all leaves me feeling Jack is bound to win, but it won't necessarily be because he does an amazing design, more by default (though he's certainly more competent than Monika.) It would make for better viewing imo if they put 3 contestants through to the final round. If it's going to be just 2, they have to ensure they're both viable winners. Surely this year it's a done deal!

JamMakingWannaBe · 23/04/2023 08:34

Monika could do really really dark green, red or blue. She doesn't - it's always black.

I think she was lucky more of those ceiling tiles weren't broken as that ceiling swag was there for a reason!

I agree.
Tom should be in the final ahead of Monika.
I'm disappointed with Michelle Ogundehin.
Has anyone read her book "Happy Inside: How to Harness the Power of Home for Health and Happiness" ?

SoupDragon · 23/04/2023 09:52

I'm prepared to forgive Monika the paint mistake as I guess she didn't know what the surface was like under that swag (which I agree was obviously there for a reason! I would absolutely have expected to find a horror underneath!). If no one told her what the surface was and that it would require more paint I guess she planned on it being a standard plaster ceiling. I don't know why they didn't check what was underneath.

I do understand why she went with fake plants. It made perfect sense from a maintenance point of view. Maybe she should have got better quality realistic ones though. Or something like gold foliage which isn't meant to look real. Or something easily dustable. DD has fake plants in her room, very cheap ikea ones, but she is 17 and allowed that sort of shit 😂

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/04/2023 10:16

Monika makes some sort of blunder with her materials every time though and ends up in tears.

That's what they choose to show in the 1 hour of footage out of x sets of 20 hours filmed or whatever. The "drama" makes for better TV and that's the persona the editors have gone with. I'll bet others stuffed up regularly too.

I mean, the floor paint episode she absolutely stuffed up on. I'm happy to cut her some slack with this one as I don't think it was entirely her fault/I think everyone would probably have made the same mistake. I'm not a Monika fan, I wanted Tom v Jack.

Flatpackprincess · 23/04/2023 13:27

To be fair, Tom bungled the amount of wood he needed and that's why he took M's from the tip.

sageandrosemary · 23/04/2023 14:04

Just caught up on this!

I love it but agree that the contestants don't seem as strong this series overall.

Definitely don't feel that Monika deserves to be in the final, lovely though she seems.

Michelle's judging seems as inconsistent as ever. I'm still trying to get over the praise for Monika's outdoor area at the wedding lodge...

freyamay74 · 23/04/2023 14:10

@sageandrosemary the tripod of sticks! Michelle seemed completely wowed by the fact it mirrored the shape of the lodge.... I mean, that's pretty basic stuff. The judging was utterly bizarre.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/04/2023 18:08

Monika also didn't realise the frontage of the beach hut needed designing too.

GrouchyKiwi · 23/04/2023 19:45

GrouchyChicks and I have binge-watched this series so we can watch the final as it's broadcast.

Monika is their favourite; I've also had Jack pegged as the winner from the first episode, though I agree he has gone downhill of late.

I probably preferred Tom of the three as a designer purely because I don't know what his actual style is. He changed it each time to meet the brief, which neither Jack nor Monika do.

I did prefer the look of Monika's salon, though, despite the lack of lighting. Jack's was too themed for me, and Tom's was boring (not so much his fault because of the brick).

PriamFarrl · 23/04/2023 20:36

I’m watching the interior design thing on Channel 4 now and one of the designers on there is talking about Japandi. No idea it was a thing.

WeAreTheHeroes · 24/04/2023 10:12

I liked Jack's design. It was by far the best of the three.

EdwardTeachBornOnABeach · 24/04/2023 13:44

I agree that it should be a Tom v Jack final and I think that Tom was unfairly edited early on. It seemed clear that he was being tongue in cheek when he was saying things but they edited like he was arrogant. He was obviously super supportive to the fellow contestants & well liked as was evident when Jack made the joke about hating him.
I wanted him to win as Jack and Monica have essentially done the same design each week but Tom followed the brief and client wishes.

GrouchyKiwi · 25/04/2023 20:05

Hello! Here for the final, if anyone else is around.

Jellykat · 25/04/2023 20:06

I'm watching!
Would prefer Monika to win, but suspect it'll be Jack..

Halsall · 25/04/2023 20:06

hello, Grouchy 👋

Halsall · 25/04/2023 20:07

Not that I’m killing time till Masterchef, oh no!
