It's not for the likes of me. I'd struggle with either set of stairs.

Madcats · 20/04/2023 08:22

They interviewed Jack and Tom's partners towards the beginning of the hair salon episode.

Jack has some clever ideas (and presumably either a rich partner or doting relatives). Having watched him demonstrate how he did the mouldings for the barn, I would be afraid that they might peel off. Bigger mouldings need to be more robust. I do like the curved sofa and stool.

Floating staircase aside, that barn would be a lovely Airbnb. They ought to ditch that ghastly pergola and get somebody in to design the garden first, though.

AggieTop · 20/04/2023 08:43

Blimey - I had always thought that Jack was the most talented of the designers on the programme but that house is truly awful. There is absolutely no warmth or personality to it. It has made me rethink my opinion of him tbh.

He lives with a partner, I'm guessing someone older.

He didn't look all that much older. I wonder what he does.

Why would the mouldings peel off? I doubt they are any less robust than the plaster cast versions.

Traditional moulded ceiling decorations are just that; moulded in one piece and joined only where strictly necessarily. I had to get some of my ceilings re-done after a bathroom leaked and the local craftsman was quite chatty.

ChocChipHandbag · 20/04/2023 10:49

I don't think we saw anything like enough detail of how he was doing the mouldings to be able to assess how good they were. They would obviously have set up a scene of him making one for filming the VT for the show anyway, they would not have had cameras there when he was doing the actual ones that were installed in the house.

I know. I drive past a specialist moulding workshop regularly. (big moulds for coving and roses etc all stacked up! I'd love to go in and talk to them). That doesn't mean individual ones would be more likely to "peel off". Smaller ones would be more likely to be stuck on better i would have thought.

SoupDragon · 20/04/2023 11:18

They are completely wrong for a chapel though. That's my biggest complaint. There is nothing left of the "essence of chapel" for want of a better phrase.

I dunno. I'd have thought that anyone who wants to live in a deconsecrated place of worship probably has no interest in religion anyway and just likes the light/space/dimensions.

Not sure many barn conversion dwellers want evidence of "essence of barn"- stinky!

I meant essence as in the architecture. Most barn conversions do indeed retain some essence of this with full height spaces, large doors and exposed roof beans.

this might as well be an ordinary house.

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/04/2023 14:10

Old Methodist Chapels are often quite plain so not particularly 'architectural' inside. It's a bit OTT but I quite like it and I expect they would take the statues, Louis Vitton luggage etc. away with them. I couldn't live with those stairs though.

MichaelAndEagle · 20/04/2023 20:36

If I saw that house I'd definitely think they'd had the interiors done by an interior designer, whether I personally like it or not.
He probably could have a professional career as one.

ObiWanKanobi · 21/04/2023 07:40

Great find!

Looking at the floor plan, you cannot get access to the master bedroom from the twirly stairs in the kitchen. The only way to the master is up the scary staircase that goes from the formal room directly into the master bedroom. That would drive be potty if I realised I needed something from one of the other bedrooms and I would have to go from master bedroom down the scary stairs into the kitchen and up the twirly stairs to the other bedrooms. By the time I did that I would have forgotten what I wanted to get!

Laiste · 21/04/2023 21:11

Sad to see Tom go, I would have liked him to win.

IMO they've wanted Jack to win from pretty much the start and I think the reason they've kept Moniker in for the final is to give a clear winner - ie Jack.

Jack vs Tom would have had the potential to be hard to separate and, as pp said, 2 white men.

Moniker is up there in the final as a fall guy. She must be - her designs are all samey, she's always running out of time and weeping over failing to order the right type/amount of materials. The plastic plants and black ceilings are just boring and predictable. WHO in their right mind would employ her to redesign something unless they wanted her to just replicate her own bloomin' living room again Hmm

LIZS · 21/04/2023 21:14

Thought Monika would lose it on poor lighting or Jack fir failing to make a vip area. Tom had at least thought about function although the mural was a bit of an experiment gone wrong.

Cocolapew · 21/04/2023 21:29

Blimey his house decor is horrible!
Maybe he's not as good as I first thought.
Tom definitely should have been in the final, I think he got a bad edit, he was lovely to Monica the week they did the chalet and she was worried she pushed him into 2 different designs.

I really like Monika, and I didn't like Tom's salon at all, but overall I think he should probably have won it - he seemed to have the biggest range of styles, but perhaps that comes with maturity.

I had Jack pegged as the winner from episode 1, but I think he's gone downhill over the last few episodes.

Overall I think it's definitely been the weakest series so far.

LIZS · 22/04/2023 08:42

I think the market for Monika's look is a bit limited, she imposes her style and colour palette rather than flexes it to meet the client's brief. The statue might have been a bit too controversial for some - talking point or offensive? She also is not learning from her mistakes like using the fake plants again,

LadyEloise1 · 22/04/2023 10:21

There's a new interior design show on Channel 4 The Big Interiors Battle.
The winner gets to keep a £250,000 apartment.

SwedishEdith · 22/04/2023 10:43

I had another good look at the house and I think the wooden stairs are enclosed by glass. Not quite as death trappy but I'd still need a banister and would be imagining my legs getting tangled up in the steps somehow.

It's not remotely my taste but that view from the balcony is gorgeous.

I'll watch, particularly as it's fairly local. I find AJ's voice a bit grating though.

theministerscat · 22/04/2023 12:13

Just caught up with latest episode - cannot believe that they selected Monika over Tom, zero lighting by mirrors was a fundamental and major error, and that ceiling was a horror. I liked the fringy lamps but the gold grids and plastic plants were vile. All she does is black black black. Tom's wasn't his finest, mural wall was a bit weird and counter a bit horrid but overall a better design and he actually listens to his clients. Shame - hope he does go on to follow his dream.

They're not enclosed by glass that I can see?

ageingdisgracefully · 22/04/2023 12:35

Just caught up. Monika did Monika again even down to underestimating the amount of paint required for the ceiling. I like her style though, I admit. I think the inclusion of a painted Mary was risky - at the end of the day it's a religious icon and could be seen as a turn off for some.

Tom got the short straw this week and had far too much to do. Shame about that - I think he would have been a worthy winner as he seems to be adaptable.

Jack didn't listen to the brief and went ahead anyway. However I think his design was the best all round.
