Hooray! Toms been too smug for my liking.. plus i do like Monika

newnamethanks · 18/04/2023 20:59

Bloody hell. There are 3 shops near me decked out in 'Monica Gothic'. It's already passe surely?

PriamFarrl · 18/04/2023 20:59

27 is still very young to be living in a lovely house like that - yes I’m jealous.

Netaporter · 18/04/2023 21:00

Jack’s salon was deffo the best. I thought Tom’s and Monika’s were equally bad. Shame Tom only seemed less arrogant in the final show. I think Jack has genuine design ability whereas Monika just dresses a space. His ability to make that ugly grey cupboard disappear was fantastic.

viques · 18/04/2023 21:04

So Jack thinks winning will make him a household name in design. Yes, right, because we can all reel off the names of previous winners can’t we?

Yes. And in Brighton it was passé 25 years ago when I lived there.

martha4clark · 18/04/2023 21:18

Shocked Tom is not in the final. Monica's was awful - plastic plants again, crap lighting and a Virgin Mary statue!!

Maybe he wants to be like Banjo from last year - got his own TV show now hasn’t he?

Going back to Monika though, why would a statue of the Virgin Mary be necessary in a hair salon?

Mooserp · 18/04/2023 21:38

Anyone got links to the hairdressers websites? I didn't take note of the names

SoupDragon · 18/04/2023 21:38

Over all, Monica doesn't deserve to be in the final. She's been perilously close to going home week after week but been lucky someone else was worse.

This week was less clear cut between her and Tom though. I think Tom did well to ditch his personal style to do what the owners wanted though. Monica just had to do Monica.

NoCo was Jacks, Monica did McQueens and Toms was... Hobbes?

Mimosa08 · 18/04/2023 21:43

I am - as ever - baffled that Monika has remained in the competition

Doingmybest12 · 18/04/2023 21:47

I thought Tom's was weakest but he had to work around all that brick work but it was a bit dull. Shame as I liked him in this programme. He seemed to have relaxed. Monica s style is a bit predictable. Jack's was best but he probably had the straight forward space.

FiloPasty · 18/04/2023 21:55

Just found this thread as I’m bloody incredulous that Monica still in it! Plastic plants and awful lighting and mirrors I’m sure that’s off brief for a hairdressers! Argh

PriamFarrl · 18/04/2023 22:22

Tom’s was weak but he had nothing to work with. They wanted to keep the brickwork, well there isn’t anything else.

Clutterbugsmum · 18/04/2023 22:23

I knew Tom would be going home today as soon as I saw his shop. There was very little he could do as the hairdresser has such a clear identity compared to the other 2 bland generic hairdressers.

I don't understand how both Michelle and Mary complained to wasn't 'soft and sensual' when clearly it is a masculine space.

Me and DD think that the company that is giving the contract have already idea of who they want and that's the reason Monika still in.

JemimaTab · 18/04/2023 22:47

It looks like Jack’s salon have kept his designs - photos of it all over their website. And it does look good. Also Monica’s salon look to have kept hers (even the horrible plastic plants).
I didn’t like Tom’s today (I hated the drape and the painting over the old mural), but agree he had the most challenging space.

BigMandysBookClub · 18/04/2023 23:04

Bit sad to see Tom go. I thought they were all OK. Tom's could have done with some plants. I didn't like that blue material.

Jack's style was a bit dated? Reminded me of salons years ago, but was pretty and practical.

The light in Monica's would have been awful. Wasn't keen on the gold space or the lamp shades.

Interesting final I think. What are they making over?

SUBisYodrethwhenLarping · 18/04/2023 23:19

I was so frustrated that MONICA is kept in yet again

She doesn't follow the brief or the clients wishes she just does Monica

Overhead lighting with a black ceiling would be awful dark shadows both to work in and have hair styled in imho

LadyEloise1 · 18/04/2023 23:30

I was dumbfounded Monika didn't go.
I thought all 3 of the hair salons looked better before.

LassoOfTruth · 18/04/2023 23:32

I’m sorry to see Tom go, but apparently I’m the only one who quite liked him! For me he was the most mature and versatile designer. Jack has great instincts and taste but a lot of what he actually makes/designs is just a bit “foundation year art project” for me. That said he’ll be robbed if he doesn’t win because Monika can only do one aesthetic and even that not particularly well. Bit harsh maybe, she seems lovely, but I cannot believe she’s a finalist! Shows how much I know.

Giggorata · 19/04/2023 02:33

Pity about Tom, he is versatile and has some nice ideas and aesthetics. losing some of those bricks with drapes was a good idea and I quite liked the colour. I didn't like the reception desk before or after, though rounding it was arguably better. Hated the huge toffee coloured squidgy sofa.

I was surprised that Monika didn't get sent home just because of the lack of decent lighting at mirror level. That guy, was it Ry?, got sent home because he failed to display the shoes well and it seems to me that this lighting mistake was a similar and fundamental error, as it is so essential to hairdressing. And I agree, the mirror were far too small and didn't look good dotted about on the wall. But I liked the black receding ceiling and the golden grids (not the fake plants)

Jack's salon looked nice but I am surprised that he wasn't penalised for leaving the supposed VIP area in the lurch after binning his branches. It ended up looking rather stark and not posh at all. But I loved the hair washing area.

freyamay74 · 19/04/2023 06:12

Yes once again, hugely inconsistent judging. In that previous shop episode Ry did indeed get sent home after creating a very attractive space but failing to make the shoes prominent enough. Yet in a hair salon where the hairdressers need to work with very good lighting and customers want to see what's being done to them. Monika gets away with her predictable dark shadowy space and some random gothic icons. And of course that hideous plastic greenery. She had her knuckles rapped for precisely that mistake before, didn't she do a trellis with plastic flowers in the previous shop? Gobsmacked she's in the final.

I agree with pp Tom has more idea about what being an interior designer really means. He listens to the brief and aims to meet what the client wants. He doesn't just stick with indulging his own tastes. That said, I didn't like his salon this week, but then he had the far more difficult space to work with, as the owner wanted to keep all the exposed brick and he also had to cover two floors and a staircase.

PriamFarrl · 19/04/2023 07:25

I was thinking that, as much as I liked it, Jack’s design would have been nothing without his mural. If you don’t have the skills like that then you are at a disadvantage.

Clutterbugsmum · 19/04/2023 07:34

LassoOfTruth I liked Tom he clearly is a more capable designer then Jack and Monika.
