Whoop. Finally starts next Friday - before death in paradise

Beyond Paradise will follow DI Humphrey Goodman solving murder mysteries in the UK

Beyond Paradise is a new Death in Paradise spin-off series revolving around DI Humphrey Goodman, starring Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton.

It's the first time that Death in Paradise has been given a spin-off show and fans are of course very excited! And now we finally know when it will start.

Kris Marshall was hugely popular during his time in the series as the bumbling but brilliant Humphrey.

Kris said: "I had the best time playing Humphrey out in Guadeloupe and whilst I was delighted that he got his happy ending with Martha, I always wanted to know what happened next.

"So it’s a joy to be putting his crumpled jacket back on and seeing how life has panned out for him back in the UK.

Working with Sally is a dream, and I can’t wait to continue Humphrey and Martha’s story and solve a few seemingly impossible mysteries along the way."

Setting up the series, Kris says: "We find Humphrey and Martha having just relocated from London down to Devon in the southwest of England and trying to find their way with their new life. Having moved in with his mother-in-law, there are certain challenges.

"Wherever he goes, he leaves a sort of mini tidal wave of madness behind him and he's causing that tidal wave to ripple through the village of Shipton Abbott."
Here's everything we know about Beyond Paradise...

Well, Martha left Saint Marie, leaving Humphrey devastated. But Humphrey then returned to London and declared he'd move to be with her. And that appeared to be the end of the story.

However, in Beyond Paradise we find the pair living together in Devon. Martha is now his fiancee and Humphrey is hoping for a quieter life. He has a new DI job, but surprise surprise his new hometown has a very high murder rate!

a new adventure awaits as we find them arriving in Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown near the beautiful Devonshire coast, having left London.

As they embark on their new life, the couple are quickly thrown in at the deep end as Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant and Humphrey joins the local police force.

"Quickly making an impression on the somewhat eclectic team; DS Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi), PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) and Margo Martins (Felicity Montagu), Humphrey sets out to help crack a host of baffling cases, with the Shipton Abbott squad witnessing a whole new approach to police work…

"Each week the team will be faced with a new crime with a unique puzzle at its heart. The not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott will be rocked by an entire family disappearing without a trace, a woman claiming she was attacked by a suspect from the seventeenth century, the robbery of a highly prized painting, a body bizarrely discovered in a crop circle and a serial arsonist with a seeming distaste for local businesses."

She said her daughter (Zoe?) is 15 I think, when she was talking to Dani.

SoupDragon · 10/04/2023 11:03

That age seems more likely!

BillStickersIsInnocent · 11/04/2023 08:52

Finally watched the last episode. I cried too, it was lovely! Perfect ending. Looking forward to the next series.

GoldenCupidon · 11/04/2023 11:58

I also loved the answerphone message. Going through similar problems to Martha at the moment and the whole storyline has been quite emotional.

I really wish they'd send Esther out to Ste Marie - would be so nice to have a woman in charge for a change! And she's awkward enough for the role. I don't want her and Humph to get together as their platonic supportive friendship has become rather lovely.

Wish we'd learnt more about her though, some more vignettes about the other staff would be nice (e.g. the desk lady and her tattoos! enjoyed that).

MeinKraft · 11/04/2023 12:48

Omg yes Esther would be great in DiP

Toddlerteaplease · 11/04/2023 14:56

@Riverlee I thought she was going to tell him she was pregnant.

SoupDragon · 11/04/2023 15:53

I don't think Esther is right for DiP at all! She doesn't have the ability for those "intuitive leaks" and she's totally normal and down to earth. I don't think she's awkward at all.

purpleme12 · 11/04/2023 15:58

I don't think she's awkward either

UsingChangeofName · 11/04/2023 17:11

No, I don't think she is awkward.
I do hope they develop the other characters a bit more in the next series though - like you say, getting to know a bit more about the rest of the police team as whole people.

GoldenCupidon · 13/04/2023 11:18

Sorry didn't put that well - I don't think she's properly awkward either (like some of the DIP detectives). But she's quite quiet and "British" and I can imagine her having to adapt to island life.

I like the scenes of her senior officer encouraging her to develop her career - wish more of that sort of thing happened in real life!

Siriusmuggle · 24/12/2023 22:14

Enjoyed that. Lovely to see Bellowhead but still bittersweet without Paul.

Tapenade · 24/12/2023 23:22

I didn’t enjoy the Christmas special much (apart from Bellowhead).

I get bored when they’re just talking about relationships.

SoupDragon · 25/12/2023 15:35

I enjoyed it but was a little disappointed that they went down the "infertility? Why not foster!" route.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 25/12/2023 17:46

It's so flat. I really want to enjoy it but it's so samey every episode. They don't seem to have nailed the "cosy comfort of stability" but instead we've got dullsville. The Sargent is the only relatable character.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/12/2023 19:38

So 50yrs on he felt bad

And the grandson was the kid

I know some get insured at foster if can't have own kids

But they want to be parents - why not help and love chikdren who need it

purpleme12 · 27/12/2023 22:36

I really liked it.

And it's another one I watched with my child

Clawdy · 28/12/2023 08:15

I enjoyed it too, still hoping they have a baby though. Can't remember now, is it definitely not possible? Just don't want a storyline with them fostering a difficult teenager!

RaraRachael · 31/12/2023 16:26

Although English murder mysteries are very much my thing, I couldn't stand Kris Marshall/Humphrey in DiP - I found him beyond annoying and was glad when he was replace, so won't be watching, Pity as it would have been right up my street without him.
