Whoop. Finally starts next Friday - before death in paradise

Beyond Paradise will follow DI Humphrey Goodman solving murder mysteries in the UK

Beyond Paradise is a new Death in Paradise spin-off series revolving around DI Humphrey Goodman, starring Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton.

It's the first time that Death in Paradise has been given a spin-off show and fans are of course very excited! And now we finally know when it will start.

Kris Marshall was hugely popular during his time in the series as the bumbling but brilliant Humphrey.

Kris said: "I had the best time playing Humphrey out in Guadeloupe and whilst I was delighted that he got his happy ending with Martha, I always wanted to know what happened next.

"So it’s a joy to be putting his crumpled jacket back on and seeing how life has panned out for him back in the UK.

Working with Sally is a dream, and I can’t wait to continue Humphrey and Martha’s story and solve a few seemingly impossible mysteries along the way."

Setting up the series, Kris says: "We find Humphrey and Martha having just relocated from London down to Devon in the southwest of England and trying to find their way with their new life. Having moved in with his mother-in-law, there are certain challenges.

"Wherever he goes, he leaves a sort of mini tidal wave of madness behind him and he's causing that tidal wave to ripple through the village of Shipton Abbott."
Here's everything we know about Beyond Paradise...

Well, Martha left Saint Marie, leaving Humphrey devastated. But Humphrey then returned to London and declared he'd move to be with her. And that appeared to be the end of the story.

However, in Beyond Paradise we find the pair living together in Devon. Martha is now his fiancee and Humphrey is hoping for a quieter life. He has a new DI job, but surprise surprise his new hometown has a very high murder rate!

a new adventure awaits as we find them arriving in Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown near the beautiful Devonshire coast, having left London.

As they embark on their new life, the couple are quickly thrown in at the deep end as Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant and Humphrey joins the local police force.

"Quickly making an impression on the somewhat eclectic team; DS Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi), PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) and Margo Martins (Felicity Montagu), Humphrey sets out to help crack a host of baffling cases, with the Shipton Abbott squad witnessing a whole new approach to police work…

"Each week the team will be faced with a new crime with a unique puzzle at its heart. The not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott will be rocked by an entire family disappearing without a trace, a woman claiming she was attacked by a suspect from the seventeenth century, the robbery of a highly prized painting, a body bizarrely discovered in a crop circle and a serial arsonist with a seeming distaste for local businesses."

I missed the first 6 minutes. Why are they so certain of the timing of the burglary.

InMySpareTime · 07/04/2023 20:55

"Because you left quite a big hole yourself"
😂

Romeiswheretheheartis · 07/04/2023 21:13

Ah, that was lovely that he met all the current DiP team!

ChessieFL · 07/04/2023 21:16

I liked the crossover ending although it was very obvious that Humphrey and Martha weren’t actually in Guadeloupe/Saint Marie!

Was it because the neighbour opposite spotted the shady figure leaving? The woman who gave the male suspect his alibi?

it was a nice, gentle series in the end. Seems to have gone quickly.

And why did the shack look unattended

And the current inspector Ralph :Neville would live there

Yes, the shack looked derelict! That was obviously the best replica they could manage....

whereeverilaymycat · 07/04/2023 21:26

I haven't watched it yet but I've just seen on their Instagram page that series 2 is confirmed. So that's cheered me up today!

I thought they do tours to the shack on Guadeloupe. Was there not a team member missing?

I couldn’t decide if they were or not, I said to DH that it looked really odd and fake but I just read an interview where Kris Marshall said he was honoured to return to film in Guadaloupe for it and that it’s a very special place to him or words to that effect.

Oh yes - Darlene was missing!

I thought they weren't really in Guadeloupe, it looked a bit fake, and seemed like a long way for him and Martha to go to film about 5 minutes! But maybe they did go? Doesn't explain why the shack was all closed up though.

Perpetua!

Oh my god, so it is!!

I enjoyed it, will def keep watching

It's no more far fetched/unbelievable than DIP.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 08/04/2023 00:29

If Neville was out at work then the shacks shutters would all be closed/locked wouldn't they so that makes sense.

We only usually see it when someone is 'at home'

The ending was the best part of the series. I'm with selwyn, nice dark rum for me too.

CrapBucket · 08/04/2023 08:33

I couldn’t stop cringing at the ending, I like to suspend my belief but honestly a step too far with all the sappy shite for me.

It annoyed me how Martha was always seen as the most amazing person, like Rory in Gilmore Girls or something, the treasure of the village. She should have been much more of a side character. Esther was brilliant and could have been a lot more prominent.

MissHavershamReturns · 08/04/2023 09:13

Finale was a bit better i thought - nice to see Margo and Esther becoming more rounded but Martha annoys me.

The whole burglary story didn’t really work for me as just felt like the lawyer girlfriend would have just looked at the legal ways of getting it back first.

Overall I would score this series at a 3 out of 5 stars. I’m going to tell myself I won’t watch series 2 but probably will while thinking it’s crap.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 08/04/2023 09:44

Yes, it was good to see them and Kelby stepping up to work on the case while Humphrey was absent. I also liked the scene with the Commissioner character and Esther.

I would rather see more of them than of Martha next series.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 08/04/2023 09:47

It might have been raining that day in Guadeloupe so perhaps the beach background was 'tidied up' in pre-production! Can't wait for the next series of DiP. Smile

Bsmirched · 08/04/2023 10:35

They knew the exact time from the dog cam.

RegainingTheWill2023 · 08/04/2023 10:49

I think Beyond Paradise fits well in the category of lighthearted crime series - Shakespeare and Hathaway, Father Brown and DIP etc.
I'm hoping the next series let's more characters 'fill out'a bit. Sadly I agree that Martha's character is irritating and I'm drawn to the others more, especially Esther. I also love Barbara Flynn and would love to see her character develop.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that with Archie gone, and the couple reconciled, the scriptwriters will not focus on their relationship in the next series!

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/04/2023 10:50

Only me who sobbed then 😂

The relationship story is just too much to pack in. It cones at the expense of the crime making any sense. How did she so conveniently raise the money to buy Archie out, were they not struggling a few weeks back and in need of a partner to fund it? In a way I hope they don't go on to get pg but focus on their time together and work.

I agree.
I'd assumed that Martha's cafe was going to feature a bit like Catherine's bar in DIP. Lots of potential for quick introduction of the guest characters and making the link to the location stronger. Maybe next series?

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/04/2023 13:19

@RegainingTheWill2023 so it seems 😂
