Whoop. Finally starts next Friday - before death in paradise

Beyond Paradise will follow DI Humphrey Goodman solving murder mysteries in the UK

Beyond Paradise is a new Death in Paradise spin-off series revolving around DI Humphrey Goodman, starring Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton.

It's the first time that Death in Paradise has been given a spin-off show and fans are of course very excited! And now we finally know when it will start.

Kris Marshall was hugely popular during his time in the series as the bumbling but brilliant Humphrey.

Kris said: "I had the best time playing Humphrey out in Guadeloupe and whilst I was delighted that he got his happy ending with Martha, I always wanted to know what happened next.

"So it’s a joy to be putting his crumpled jacket back on and seeing how life has panned out for him back in the UK.

Working with Sally is a dream, and I can’t wait to continue Humphrey and Martha’s story and solve a few seemingly impossible mysteries along the way."

Setting up the series, Kris says: "We find Humphrey and Martha having just relocated from London down to Devon in the southwest of England and trying to find their way with their new life. Having moved in with his mother-in-law, there are certain challenges.

"Wherever he goes, he leaves a sort of mini tidal wave of madness behind him and he's causing that tidal wave to ripple through the village of Shipton Abbott."
Here's everything we know about Beyond Paradise...

Well, Martha left Saint Marie, leaving Humphrey devastated. But Humphrey then returned to London and declared he'd move to be with her. And that appeared to be the end of the story.

However, in Beyond Paradise we find the pair living together in Devon. Martha is now his fiancee and Humphrey is hoping for a quieter life. He has a new DI job, but surprise surprise his new hometown has a very high murder rate!

a new adventure awaits as we find them arriving in Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown near the beautiful Devonshire coast, having left London.

As they embark on their new life, the couple are quickly thrown in at the deep end as Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant and Humphrey joins the local police force.

"Quickly making an impression on the somewhat eclectic team; DS Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi), PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) and Margo Martins (Felicity Montagu), Humphrey sets out to help crack a host of baffling cases, with the Shipton Abbott squad witnessing a whole new approach to police work…

"Each week the team will be faced with a new crime with a unique puzzle at its heart. The not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott will be rocked by an entire family disappearing without a trace, a woman claiming she was attacked by a suspect from the seventeenth century, the robbery of a highly prized painting, a body bizarrely discovered in a crop circle and a serial arsonist with a seeming distaste for local businesses."

I thought the daughter was mums partner. She looked to old to be her daughter!

I agree with you. When she has her dungarees on, she looked younger. However, when she was speaking to the policewoman (name forgotten), she looked ten years older (and I thought it was a different actress at first).

Whatsnewpussyhat · 01/04/2023 11:57

Agree I think the BBC haven't realised why DIP was so popular. People just want a feel good whodunnit with nice scenery and pleasant characters. Leave the angst and misery to the other programmes

Yep. The escapism is part of the charm.
Deaths + paradise = perfection.
No murders + depressing storylines = disappointment.

Humphrey was never my favourite but he fit in nicely with the theme of someone awkward out of their comfort zone.
Don't give a toss about 'Mots'. Her going from a secondary to primary character hasn't worked at all for me.

I just want a proper murder with the Columbo style solve and a nice cold beer by the sea with friends.
(Which they've unsuccessfully tried to recreate with the houseboat scenes at the end)

The other police woman/detective seems to fancy Humphrey, I hope they don't go down that route. Although it's telling that after all these weeks I don't even know her name!

"Although it's telling that after all these weeks I don't even know her name!"
I don't know her name either and frankly don't care, I haven't warmed to any of the characters and I found the portrayal of the young uniform policeman (again I dont know his name) as someone completely stupid; think the West country village idiot as insulting to the police (and Im not a policeman or a big fan of the police so God knows what they think) and the residents of the West country in general. I love DIP particularly the first two series but I just don't like Beyond Paradise the plot is muddled and boring and there's no feel good factor about it.
I also don't care about "Mots" in DIP I seem to recall she was young fresh faced and cheerful now she looks old haggard and stressed. The story lines aren't serious or credible so why are the two main character so bloody earnest and boring?

Riverlee · 01/04/2023 13:44

Thats interesting that the names haven’t gelled with us. I think the only names I know are Humphrey, Martha (aka Lucy), Margot and Archie, and Selwyn the pigeon, although he’s been usurped by a duck.

i recognised Archie but couldn’t pinpoint where from. The answer was Law and Order Uk - loved that series, and had a great theme tune.

Refresher for everyone like me who keeps saying, you know, the other detective...
Set in 'Shipton Abbot' which is Martha's home town, the regulars are

  • DI Humphrey Goodman
  • Martha 'Mots' Lloyd, Humphrey's fiancee
  • Anne Lloyd, Martha's mother
  • DS Esther Williams
  • PC Kelby Hartford
  • Margo Martins, police office support
  • Archie Hughes, Martha's ex fiance and now business partner
  • Chief Superintendent Charlie Woods
  • Selwyn
I don't think Esther's name is meant to be a tribute? https://www.britannica.com/biography/Esther-Williams

@OhBeAFineGuyKissMe
I want to see that episode now! Although it looks like green screen to me.

@Riverlee Jamie Bamber (Archie) is one of those actors I feel like I know, without ever having watching anything he's been in 😁

Esther Williams | Biography, Swimmer, Movies, & Facts

Esther Williams, in full Esther Jane Williams, (born August 8, 1921, Inglewood, California, U.S.—died June 6, 2013, Beverly Hills, California), American swimming champion who became one of the most popular and profitable Hollywood movie stars of the 1...

Against my will and better judgement I’m still watching and still think it’s crap.

Thanks for reminders of cast names - still didn’t know the name of his Naomi replacement sidekick.

I hate all the angst - ditch. Only allowed if connected to crime. Eg yes fine if Mots discovers Archie is money laundering but no to tragic tears.

Ariela · 01/04/2023 16:11

I think I've decided why this doesn't begin to compare with DIP.
The thing about DIP was that you could time your dash out to stick the kettle on with a point in the action where nothing much was happening, then dash out again to make and pour out the tea. You missed nothing vital, and it all got re-capped later in the talk through anyway.

In BP you miss a bit of irrelevant to the crime action while the kettle boils, and a bit of action about the crime when you pour it out, meaning a later scene makes no sense, and there's no recap of the episode at the end.

LIZS · 01/04/2023 16:54

I think the back story of Martha , IVF, Archie is the problem with BP. DIP works because there is relatively little ongoing storyline, or if there is it is very much secondary, and more of an episodic crime drama in a lovely location. Here we have two separate narratives fighting for attention.

BluIsTheColor · 01/04/2023 16:56

Yeah and one narrative is a bit shit and kinda depressing.

KrasiTime · 01/04/2023 17:39

Yes like me a lot of people don’t seem to be enjoying it. I’m carrying because I think I should but not particularly liking it. I’m beginning to feel the same about Murdoch Mysteries.

TeenDivided · 01/04/2023 17:40

As a 'failed IVF person' I am finding to IVF storyline hard in a show I want to watch for light entertainment.

But I am enjoying the series as a whole.

I feel the same about Murdoch mysteries too.
Have the last two series recorded but unwatched. Started to get bored of it, especially the self righteous Murdoch himself and Dr Ogden.

Reminds me of watching Due South back in the day where the main character is so 'good' (dull) you end up liking the flawed sidekick more.

I found the portrayal of the young uniform policeman (again I dont know his name) as someone completely stupid; think the West country village idiot as insulting to the police

They've literally wrote the police equivalent of Elvis from fireman Sam.

the original sidekick was fantastic on that though - none of this is fantastic plus Due South had a lovely husky .

My Due South comment was more in relation to Murdoch mysteries that BP.
But yes the Husky was the best thing in it! Great actor and so damn fluffy.

KrasiTime · 01/04/2023 18:06

Glad it’s not just me @Whatsnewpussyhat

whereeverilaymycat · 01/04/2023 22:26

100% what I want to happen too! I do still like the show, a bit more focus on the whodunnit bit would be good (so they can be a bit more in-depth) but doesn't have to be murder.

MeinKraft · 01/04/2023 23:29

Humphrey seems to have a bit of chemistry with Esther doesn't he! But Martha will definitely be pregnant in the next episode from the boat shag. No way would this wholesome show throw in a random shag for no reason, even DiP doesn't do that and it's about murders!

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/04/2023 07:37

I like the fact it's not all murder and some mystery

butterpuffed · 02/04/2023 08:23

I'm really liking this , as it's quirky , only up to episode 4 so far . Margot makes me laugh and PC Kelby 's not very bright but loving his facial expressions .

I've only fairly recently been watching Death in Paradise so didn't see Kris Marshall in it , like him in this .

whereeverilaymycat · 02/04/2023 08:24

@butterpuffed he was fantastic in DIP. I really love the character and so extra happy he's in this new show.

ciderhouserules · 02/04/2023 11:59

I'm in the 'still watching, God knows why' camp. Grin I hated Kris Marshal in DIP, the worst DI in the list.

I didn't see the crop circles episode, but caught up with the latest one - watching with only half an eye. The young daughter def looked about 30 by the end.
I almost screamed at the TV when woman PC ( I know there's a list - Esther. is it?) said 'oh IVF is hard' - you mean IVF is hard on the woman!!!! - the man is there for support, ok but it's the woman who is getting the jabs, the hormones, the painful internals, the even more painful judgement from others....
It was a bit - oh poor Goodman. He wants kids so badly!

And does veg oil really self-combust like that? 2.5 hours of sitting on a harbour - nothing else to do, DI Goodman?

And OMFG that police admin lady pisses me off so much. I know she's supposed to be someone free-thinking, not pigeon-holed, which is OK if she did her fucking job! Sitting having a 'cake break'? I'd be fucking sacked if I did that when there's work to be done. SACK HER!

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/04/2023 12:54

Tho a cake break sounds good

Those who smoke / I don't - get fab breaks
