Couldn't see a thread on this....

Well maybe that's why the police have never left the river theory.

The menopause? She is 45? How long could her alcohol issues have been going on for if they were related to the menopause. This statement sounds like the speculation (to avoid speculation)

ButtonSister · 15/02/2023 18:53

Is that written statement genuine?
Outrageous if so. The most they needed to say if anything at all, was that Ms Bulley's vulnerability was around personal health and family issues.

To out her as an alcoholic (which in itself is a symptom of mental illness but many will judge her for that) is beyond reasonable.

I wonder if one of the newspapers was about to run a story on her?

Hobnobswantshernameback · 15/02/2023 18:54

So Now we have gynaecologists posting who know best about the menopause.
there really is no end to Mumsnetters talents

It certainly explains their insistence and I’m now of the opinion that I think they’re correct to assume she’s drowned.

You do realise the menopause can start late 30's? It's not just women in their 50's who suffer.

MissWings · 15/02/2023 19:08

She was unstable. It’s looking less likely a third party was involved.

User45378754 · 15/02/2023 19:15

Someone with challenges in life can also have an accident, be abducted or take themselves away somewhere.

There is no evidence yet that she has harmed herself.

Its still a missing persons with open mind to other possibilities.

The misogyny! Are you fucking kidding me.

Unstable? Why because she was menopausal? Because this is now where we’re going isn’t it?

Menopausal women are unstable. Jesus wept!

She doesn’t look menopausal (peri) perhaps. Not that it has ANYTHING to do with going missing in ten minutes.

I can’t believe the police have disclosed this information.

Why wait until now to say oh by the way she may have drank more alcohol than she should- ahhh that’s why she went in missing in ten minutes🤦🏼‍♀️fgs.

I agree @Suzi888 even if she was having an early menopause and drank a bit more than she knew she should, it was 9.20, she had just driven, she was on a work call, walking the dog. It is her private business. If it's even as relevant as releasing it is supposed to make it seem

Whitewolf2 · 15/02/2023 19:27

This is awful, are they saying they know for certain she was blind drunk to the point of drowning - at 9.20am and on a work call, otherwise how is it something to disclose?

MissWings · 15/02/2023 19:27

@Suzi888

Some are yes. It can be for some women utterly disastrous for their mental health. First episodes of psychosis etc can happen around the time of meno. Having said that, the police could certainly be swaying this into that direction in order to sweep their failings under the carpet. Why the place was never sealed off is beyond me. Perhaps they initially judged her as “unstable” hence not sealing it off. It’s a murky case, very sad all round.

StalkedByASpider · 15/02/2023 19:30

Is that statement actually legit?

It's very poorly worded - it sounds strange...not like an official statement at all.

FancyFanny · 15/02/2023 19:31

So Nicola Bulley's life was not the idyllic existence we've been led to believe it was. There's clearly more to this case than meets the eye and eventually the truth will out.

But using the menopause to explain problems with alcohol is mis-guided. I suspect that her family are behind this statement and the fact that they've painted her and their family life as being nothing short of perfect shows they are very image conscious. They need an excuse to explain her issues. I think this image has backfired on them because it's generated a lot of media coverage and speculation. The information that she was an alcoholic definitely lends a a whole new perspective to the possibilities about what might have happened to her.

Lochjeda · 15/02/2023 19:33

My sister in law disclosed to me in December shed been suicidal and had serious mental health issues because of the menopause. The doctors just kept increasing her dose of antidepressants instead of giving her hrt and it was making her feel more numb, more brain fog and more suicidal as she literally didn't care anymore about anything. Realising that menopause can and ddoes make some women unstable is absolutely not misogynistic!

MissWings · 15/02/2023 19:39

@Lochjeda

Thank you. I know my own mother had a horrible, horrible time with it. She had never suffered with her mental health in her life but she just couid not function for many years and just became a shell of her former self. She’s through it now and we have our mum back.

ItWillWash · 15/02/2023 19:39

I don't know any dog owner who would take their dog with them to take their own life. Harming herself doesn't seem plausible. She was on a work call and had her beloved dog with her.

I believe it's possible she may have fallen into the river but without any solid evidence then it is equally possible someone else was involved.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 15/02/2023 19:39

Fucking hell that is a strange statement. But maybe there's hope she is still alive.
Maybes she's run off needing space.

ssd · 15/02/2023 19:41

Im really sad she suffered so much with menopause. This time in our lives can really be a bastard. Ive tried hrt, magnesium, setraline. I didn't find an answer. I try to swim and walk and talk it out with friends and dh . But its still a bastard.

BlackFriday · 15/02/2023 19:43

That's a good point about the dog. Also, are they suggesting she was drunk first thing in the morning? Whilst driving her kids to school? Why do we need to know this (if indeed it was even the case)?
I just don't see how releasing this personal information to the general public is in anyone's interests - least of all Nicola's. I feel uncomfortable knowing it.

I work in a field that deals with suicides all the time and it is not all uncommon for people to take their dogs and then kill themselves. It’s normally because it’s not preplanned and is, for want of a better phrase, a “moment of madness”.

from the wording the police used to describe their visit to her in the weeks preceding her disappearance it sounds very likely they’d attend due to a mental health crisis.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/02/2023 19:52

I can't believe they have shared this information. I don't see that it helps and it feels very inappropriate.

Badger1970 · 15/02/2023 19:52

Such a sad story.
