Is it a recoupling because production want Ron and Lana to be a couple before Casa?

PenguinIce · 08/02/2023 16:59

Maybe they all have to vote for who they think is least compatible couple. They have done that in previous years.

CarpyDiem · 08/02/2023 17:01

Oh gosh! You used my title!!

I've not been on the thread for a couple of days, as I missed the live show and have been catching up on catch-up. It's rather nice watching that way as you can tab through all the tedious bits!

Puffalicious · 08/02/2023 17:24

It was very interesting today. Randomly a pupil (14 year old boy) asked me 'Miss, do you watch Love Island?' . I said I did and he said he loves it this year 'Cos I pure fancy one of them on it'. It turns out it's Lana. He's a really nice lad, articulate, bright, respectful, and it struck me that he (and his 2 mates that agreed with how hot she is) is watching Lana being treated really poorly, yet running back to a man who behaves badly, and will think/ subconsciously think that that's the way to get the girl.

t's actually really angered me this afternoon. I KNOW it's just a gameshow, but it's reminded me how influential it is. I'm stuck stewing over it. We have always known how it affects girls' body image/ self-esteem, but this brought into sharp focus how attitudes and behaviours are formed/ solidified in very young minds- female and male- by these shows. To me it's a slice of modern culture- which I approach in quite an anthropological way really- but it's so bloody damaging at a low level.

I didn't have the time/ curricular class is not the place to go into a deeper discussion, but I'll email pastoral care to see if it can be included in a PSE lesson for this age group at some point. Interestingly, my Head Teacher started watching it so he could connect with his teenage daughter. I've had some good discussions with him over the past, few years, so he'll listen.

Don't get me started on the group celebration of sexy underwear/ accessories and a shag - orchestrated and planned by other people! I can't even go there.

Am I over-thinking? Thoughts.

autienotnaughty · 08/02/2023 17:39

I watched it with my daughters when they were 15/16 and found it was a good op for discussion about consent and feeling pressured etc. But not great if there's no discussion as it sets a poor precedent of how women should be treated

DDoOneRon · 08/02/2023 17:59

I used to discuss it with my students, particularly my tutor group. (Am no longer in teaching). I think parental input would be ten times better though.

Rollergirl11 · 08/02/2023 18:05

@Puffalicious You’re not overthinking it. I started watching with DD when she was around 14 for that very reason; of being able to discuss and offset what she was seeing on screen with a heavy dose of reality, what and what not to do etc. Last years was actually really good at highlighting controlling and possessive behaviour in how Luca was with Gemma. And Gemma was a very good role model on how to handle yourself and know your self-worth.

Unfortunately I think that this generation of young people have gone backward with regards to how young men view women. I think that SM, easily accessible (and hardcore) porn from a young age and the likes of YouTube sensations like Andrew Tate have moulded young men’s attitudes, morals and principles in a really damaging way. Boys objectify girls so much. DD tells me she is regularly asked for nudes (by boys she does and doesn’t know) and sent unsolicited dick pics frequently and has done since the age of 14. And the worst thing is that the girls aren’t even shocked by it anymore. It’s just a regular occurrence. I actually really worry for our young people and how they will navigate relationships and sex.

Sorry that was a bit of a rant!

Tormundsbeard · 08/02/2023 18:38

I would watch it with my teenage DDs and talk about toxic relationships and red flags. It did really illustrate what pricks boys can be. When Jake was always putting Liberty down etc

Puffalicious · 08/02/2023 18:42

Rant away Rollergirl! I agree with every word you say.

autie that's exactly how it should be used, with parental input like DDoRon says. Sadly, most of the class today watch it in their rooms/ with mates and no parents. Many of my pupils have tough backgrounds and little parental guidance full stop.

I find this society worrying in many ways. I love young people and can't stand when folk poke holes in them- we've never lived in the world they're living in- they've got a tough gig navigating their way through life. However, I have to agree attitudes of boys have regressed on recent years. We're so concerned with the influence of Andrew Tate that we've paid for an outside group to deliver workshops next month addressing misogyny.

I have 3 DS- 18, 16 & 11- they've had/ are having the best opportunities to make the right decisions about relationships as they've been brought up by open parents and we chat about loads of stuff all the time. Having a pretty outspoken, feminist mammy sort of helps 🙈😄, but I worry about those boys in my school- nice kids but who have access to them entirety of SM and porn.

Girls in school have told me about the dick pics in their DMs from random boys. It's fucking awful. Yet it's the more subtle, manipulative, gaslighting behaviour that may get past more girls' defences. I'm not blaming Ron for society's ills, but his actions are an example of this phenomenon where behaviour is exactly like a gas- unexpected and often untraceable, but deadly.

Sorry to get all serious, it just upset me today.

Zampa · 08/02/2023 19:11

This from @Rollergirl11 and comments from @Puffalicious really worry me. My girls are 7 and 5 and I'm worried already.

Aquarius1234 · 08/02/2023 19:22

Does anyone else think Jessie could be a bit deranged? I mean she's taking the show a bit too far if she's having sex with Will. There was no need for her to do it.
And it seemed awkward. Like she thinks he's a catch and a laugh. But it's not real life and its a game show.
She seems a bit nuts.
And yeh she may not be putting on a show and playing the game. But I don't think she's quite all there.

Sorry Zampa but it is worrying. As they get older you'll need to speak openly to them regularly. It's a mad world.

Rollergirl11 · 08/02/2023 19:29

It’s frightening @Zampa. As @Puffalicious says this is the extreme end of our young people’s interactions. There are other aspects that are far more insidious though. Apps like Snapchat mean that our young people converse solely with pictures. They have lost the ability to make conversation with each other. It’s literally pics/snaps sent back and forth for hours on end. It’s all so meaningless with no depth. DD says that generally a boy will snap making small talk for a few sentences. Then they will casually ask about nudes and if the girl declines then that’s it, conversation over and on to the next girl who will oblige. And there are PLENTY of girls who will. Because they think that is the only way to keep a boy interested in them. Images are the language young people speak now. Conversation is quite literally dead. SM has so much to answer for.

Aquarius1234 · 08/02/2023 19:30

It seems and it's always been the case even before social media became a thing.
That Immature or socially awkward guys just want sex and watch porn. Doubt that'd gonna change.
It's just horrible now compared to 15/ 20 years ago cos I guess it's all on videos and phones.

FiloPasty · 08/02/2023 19:33

I always tell everyone I watch it for anthropological reasons as I have a science background 😂I do find it fascinating though, yes it’s mindless tv but they are a different generation to me and it’s an education in itself!

I really like Jessie, she’s from Tasmania so a small place and I think her and Will really well suited for many of the reasons previously said. I think she overlooks the campiness as being English and eccentric.

I think it’s unkind to judge on looks but this is Love Island and I think Claudia has just been cast because of connections, maybe I’ll change my mind tonight but I don’t think she’s going to find anything genuine in there.
I’m so ready for Casa Amor….

Bang on. DS2 has this app where it alerts you to when your slot is to take a photo of where you are and what you're doing. For the life of me I can't remember the name of it, but they're all into it. He's 16 and it's a laugh to him and his mates - who can run and put on the most ridiculous hat/ glasses/ flower pot/ weirdest pose/ coolest view- and totally fun, but I imagine it could be used for ill very easily.

This is probably correct

That's interesting, presumable some poor girl that didn't have them all with their tongues hanging out (so it wasn't Megan!). I'm not curious to know who it was! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Island_(2015_TV_series,_series_4)

Laura Crane (think she ended up with Jack Fowler during her time in maybe?) and Stephanie Lam (don’t really remember her at all) seem like the most likely candidates. Came in on day 43 so quite late!

Rollergirl11 · 08/02/2023 20:46

@Puffalicious are you talking about BeReal? DD and DS were both obsessed for a bit but got bored relatively quick.

Can someone help me? I’ve been racking my brains, has there been another female islander that came in during the heart rate challenge like Claudia has? I’m pretty sure there was but can’t for the life of me remember who it was?

Haven't read the article. But AJ springs to mind. She was older looking and people said she looked a little bit like Rachel Stevens and lots of negative comments.

Slightly off topic. But Consent on Channel 4 catch up is a must watched drama. All 15/ 16 should watch it.
About rape accusations in a private school.

Puffalicious · 08/02/2023 20:51

That's it Rollergirl11. DN who's at uni sees it and he hers, so it's great in that way, but I hear it's not so great for those vulnerable teens pressured to send other kind of content.

Ooooh. Not heard of that. Googling now. Thanks muchos.

It was Rebecca in the first winter one (2020). Tall, brunette, Geordie who was in a brief love triangle with Siannise and Luke.
