Is it weird to say no game spoilers? I've not played the game so don't know the game story line

Who else is watching?

The 1st 2 episodes were really good

But wow. Ep 3 is amazing.

I actually cried over characters I'd known for less than 1 hour

My brother a big gamer said the first game of this was amazing. But the second terrible. Can other gamers confirm? He refused to buy the second one, they'd completely ruined it he said.

Do you agree?

It’s impossible to answer this without game spoilers! Sorry!

I think it's quite clever how they give it a game vibe in the shooting scene - especially when the infected pour out. So is the fungus nourishing them somehow as how could they all have so much energy having been cooped up under ground for so long.

As an as aside I was watching with my 15 year old, and she pointed out that the Henry actor used to be in a kids show called the next step playing a character called west. At one point Henry says 'I don't know the next step' and at the end Ellie said which way is west! I think watching with my kids is nice because they point out random stuff but it's stopping me from getting absorbed and feeling the emotions as they bicker so much! The outcome of that episode felt very certain early on and I would have liked it to have been delayed a bit. We did think if Ellie had warned Joel and Henry what had happened to Sam the ending might have been different for Henry, he would have had time to process things - find out that there was hope and that everything hadn't been fate/in vain if he in some way helped Ellie on her journey.

It was important that she didn’t, though, because it shows us that she really believed that her blood was going to cure him overnight. That’s why she wrote ‘I’m sorry’ on the pad (incidentally, I’ve seen a few theories online that Sam wrote this when he realised what was happening as he turned but it was definitely Ellie. They established in their written conversation in the motel that Sam writes in lower case and Ellie in block capitals).

I don’t think Henry would have done anything different with more time. He did awful,
awful things to protect Sam and it was all for nothing, especially after Kathleen’s words about messing with ‘fate’. It comes back to the recurrent theme of purpose - Frank was Bill’s purpose, Sam was Henry’s, and Ellie is Joel’s. We are being shown that their world is so terrible that there is no going on if you lose your purpose.

The second game is bloody brilliant. But yeah, massive spoilers

Hoppinggreen · 13/02/2023 08:09

The fact that Ellie’s blood isn’t a cure becomes important later I think

user1471561661 · 13/02/2023 08:35

Mother - Yes totally - Henry said what have I done when he killed himself and I took this to mean handing over the brave man (Kathleen's brother/ Michael) basically for nothing. But I think if Henry had a bit of time before Sam went too far into the infection - Ellie had tried using her blood as a cure and had given them brief hope - he might have joined their journey as his new purpose, maybe with encouragement from Sam. I think a problem with the series is we suspect this can't happen (I haven't read spoilers/ played the game, just the series description) so it became obvious how the episode was going to end. The shocking speed that Henry shot himself was unexpected though.

I can see how the cure not being blood will be important - Ellie is becoming worth saving in her own right and giving her blood to cure people would be straightforward where other methods probably won't be - it would be awful for Joel if she had to be sacrificed, potentially for nothing, like Henry sacrificed Michael.

I'm loving TLOU but I didn't enjoy episode 3 at all. Far too cliched and self indulgent for my tastes. Singing along to show tunes, planting strawberries and wanting to make the dress boutique pretty again? Like really?

I don’t agree. People were really angry about certain aspects of the story. But it's a great story. Yeah okay it's not a happy story on the whole but neither was the first game. I prefer TLOU1 but I still loved TLOU2.

ellebelli · 13/02/2023 11:35

Enjoying this.
I don't understand all the hype for the third episode...

I did enjoy the episode but I also said to DH that there were an awful lot of “Gay cliche” in there

MotherOfHouseplants · 13/02/2023 11:48

FWIW Long Long Time isn't a show tune!

IClaudine · 13/02/2023 21:29

Crikey. Episode five was...😥

CampervanKween · 13/02/2023 22:25

I started watching it but I've lost enthusiasm. Was episode 5 worth watching? I'm not keen on the woman running things.

i preferred the second game more, I’ve played both many times On different levels of difficulty. It’s a surprise for me because they’ve mixed some stuff up, changed stuff completely in the show, I love it though...

It is.

Flavabobble · 14/02/2023 09:33

Episode 5 was possibly my favourite so far. The kind of episode that The Walking Dead would have spun into a 16-part season.

Botw1 · 14/02/2023 10:02

@Flavabobble

So true lol

I didn't interpret Ellie's blood not saving Sam as a sign that her blood is not a cure. More that the method of delivery was very unlikely to be effective, simple though it might appear to a child.

Surely it wouldn't be as easy easy as just wipin some blood on the scratch? It would need some kind of science processing into something like an injection?

This is so true! Certainly Kathleen would have been a whole series of 'baddie' getting more and more infuriating.

Without spoilers it IS important that her blood doesn’t cure

If you go back to the very beginning of episode 1, the series began with a talk show in 1968 where a scientist played John Hannah theorised how a fungal infection might mutate to infect humans. It is worth going back to this very short scene as it explains a lot about the infection. He is clear that cordyceps is an infection of the brain. It is not a blood-borne disease.

DuncinToffee · 14/02/2023 11:18

I have now watched e5 and it was good. The fight scenes were very computer game like, Joel's sniper position and the infected hard to kill giant.

The infected child in the car was quite chilling.

Thanks for posting that clip MotherofHouseplants

SprungIsSpringing · 14/02/2023 11:18

I haven't played the game so I am entirely ignorant, except for what has been shown on the series.

However, I suppose there is also a difference between immunity and cure. Ellie tried to sure Sam but maybe whatever she is, is a preventative to stop infection spreading rather than to cure it when it does?

Anyway, all guess work for a show I am enjoying quite a lot so far.

Yeah it's really hard to answer questions while knowing the storyline. I'm going to swerve them me.

But right in episode one in the meeting of smoking men on telly, it explains cordyceps and how it works, so if you were paying attention you would probably know this already.
