Is it weird to say no game spoilers? I've not played the game so don't know the game story line

Who else is watching?

The 1st 2 episodes were really good

But wow. Ep 3 is amazing.

I actually cried over characters I'd known for less than 1 hour

In both the game and TV series I've never understood why marlene sends Ellie with Joel when she's going there herself anyway.

Maybe because that would risk both her and Ellie getting killed? At least this way one of them may survive?

Botw1 · 14/03/2023 11:21

@IClaudine

Oh yes that definitely should have been explained

So Joels story wasnt a total lie

It was time-sensitive and Marlene was badly injured. They had a whole team waiting to transport Ellie and the original job was to get Ellie there in return for the car battery. Joel, Tess and Ellie found them in the abandoned building in Boston; one had been infected and killed all of the others. That was where Tess sacrificed herself by blowing the whole place up. Joel only continued to travel with Ellie because of the promise he made to Tess.

IClaudine · 14/03/2023 11:27

I think I need to watch the whole thing again from the start!

I thought she was in shock after what happened with the cult leader.

I just assumed she new the end of the journey was near and she'd miss Joel

I just read this on the Guardian column BTL comments. I guess they were too pushed for time to include this, but I think they should have.

There's time for a little more nuance in the game, embedded in the notes Joel finds while tearing through the hospital looking for ammo and Ellie. In particular there's a list of unsuccessful attempts to produce a cure with other immune children. As I recall Ellie would be the thirteenth the Fireflies had sacrificed, presumably in vain.

This is interesting. Maybe Joel wasn't fully lying yo Ellie at the end after all.

I did wonder that 😂but then i thought maybe as she's used to travelling with an entourage they'd attract more attention and be more of a risk than a man and child. Also to quote the iconic Taken line, Joel does seem to 'have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you'

No, as explained above it was never Marlene's plan for Joel to escort Ellie the whole way. He and Tess were only supposed to get her to the rendezvous in Boston with the Firefly transport team.

My brother a big gamer said the first game of this was amazing. But the second terrible. Can other gamers confirm? He refused to buy the second one, they'd completely ruined it he said.

Do you agree?

I thought the second game was a masterpiece. It’s very dark and brutal, and it doesn’t pander to the player base. Your brother sounds like one of those gamers.

By the way, I have been waiting a month to congratulate this pp who worked out the ending four episodes ago!

Why thank you 😊

I have to admit though, I stopped watching after i think episode 4 or 5. Just thought not enough was happening. I have an idea about the storyline because instead of watching I listen to the podcast The Cast of Us whilst working .
It's very funny and explains each episode well.

From what I hear with the cult leader and cannibalism it sounds a bit like one of The Walking Dead and Fear the walking dead plots combined. Maybe I'll go back and watch at some point.

Dotellhimpike · 14/03/2023 17:43

I found the final episode of the season to be the weakest of all the episodes. It was still a cracking show overall though, and last week's harrowing episode is still haunting me. Can't wait for next season.

MotherOfHouseplants · 14/03/2023 22:48

Apparently a ‘making of’ documentary was aired on HBO immediately after episode 9, but I can’t find any trace of it on Sky. Does anyone know if we are going to get it in the UK?

FrostyFifi · 14/03/2023 23:14

There's various things on the HBO Max youtube channel that might be what you're after.

MotherOfHouseplants · 14/03/2023 23:22

Thank you but it’s a 50-minute documentary. I think I’ve found the answer on Twitter - no plans yet to broadcast in the UK.

@MotherOfHouseplants look up the channel RedCarpetTrailers on YouTube - there’s a copy of the documentary on there!

TheIsleOfTheLost · 15/03/2023 11:59

I was disappointed with the ending. I think it did need another infected appearance somewhere. I loved with the series that they prioritised human relationships and it wasn't all about the "zombies". But they were so often absent that it lost the scare factor. They got to just wander all over everywhere camping out and not be at risk. I thought maybe the snow was keeping them away in the winter scenes, but then it was warmer and still none popping up. Not sure if I will watch series 2, see how good it looks at the time.

abovemiddlec · 15/03/2023 12:16

I enjoyed the last episode but it felt rushed, but whether that's accurate I don't know.

Apparently Ellie's mother is the voice actor for Ellie from the game? I may have remembered that wrongly.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/03/2023 12:17

No that's correct- the actress is Ashley Johnson

I'm a bit unclear about Anna running into the house at the beginning, did she know the house? And then for Marlene to turn up after the birth, were they chasing her?

Any yes to the Bond villainy explaining- 'where's Ellie?'

'Prepping for surgery where her brain is to be removed and examined' 😬

Surely you'd just say 'resting', or 'having a bath' 😂

Yes, the house was the base that Anna and Marlene and the others were using, Anna calls out for them as she rushes in but they are on patrol.

Anna gets bitten, the implication is the infection enters her bloodstream and passed to Ellie through the umbilical cord. Anna lies to Marlene that the cord was cut before the bite.

JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg · 15/03/2023 20:24

Agree with PP, that birth scene was ridiculous. Babies don't come out like that! I know it's written by a man but did he not think to ask a mother what birth is like?

Ahh! Thank you for clearing the bit about the house up

LikeTearsInRain · 16/03/2023 08:52

I believe the birth scene was added for the show (could be wrong, long time since I played it). In the game I don’t think we know much at all about Ellie’s birth.

The last two episodes felt really rushed. Surprised the one with David was only about 45 mins. I’m sure that was quite a long segment of the game. Similarly from the moment starts shooting in the hospital to finding Ellie seemed so fast, in the game - a real slog. They could have padded it out with showing some flashbacks or Ellie’s perspective of arriving or something.

The show was a great adaptation. My only complaint is the pacing, some episodes were extended in length and not all that much happened. Others were short and lots happened.

The second game was very controversial for a number of reasons, but I thought it was good. I am not looking forward to the controversies and online toxicity resurfacing when they start to broadcast season 2

I think it's important to remember they weren't voice actors, they were performance capture actors. They weren't just recording voice lines in a booth, they were physically acting the scenes.

Yes, that sounds right and credit where it's due.

Though I don't usually remember the fine details as I've never played the game and this is what I remember from what teen daughter has told me about the background!

CruCru · 17/03/2023 22:41

I really liked the bit where Joel told Ellie that “everyone loved contractors”.
