Is it weird to say no game spoilers? I've not played the game so don't know the game story line

Who else is watching?

The 1st 2 episodes were really good

But wow. Ep 3 is amazing.

I actually cried over characters I'd known for less than 1 hour

Haven't seen the new episode yet but I'm not seeing all fuss so far. Think I'm zombied out after years of walking dead - dont see its anything new

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 01/02/2023 09:53

I love it so far and I thought episode 3 was superb.

I think the parallels with The Girl With All The Gifts end with the nature of the cordyceps infection and the idea of an immune child (although that trope is later overturned). The narrative of TGWATG focuses closely on the people trying to cure the pandemic. Those people exist in TLOU but they are on the periphery. TLOU is about the relationship between two people who happen to be in an apocalypse. In terms of narrative themes I would say that The Road is a better point of comparison.

I gave up on The Walking Dead about ten years ago and when it ended last year I was genuinely surprised to realise that a) it was still going and b) anyone was still watching it 🤷🏻‍♀️

I seem to be alone in finding episode 3 quite self-indulgent and forced, then. The actors were great, of course, but no, I didn't like the episode or find it moving. Hard to put my finger on why. I said self-indulgent, and I think that's the best way I can describe it. A bit "Look at us doing Prestige Drama.". A bit ersatz.

Found episode 1 more emotionally engaging and authentic.

You're not alone. I mean it was well made and that, and I liked seeing how a prepper would cope with a zombie apocalypse, but I don't enjoy watching romance, kissing or sex scenes. I don't watch action/zombie stuff for that. I disliked when The Walking Dead centred on that stuff too.

Although I'm a bit of a walker myself emotionally and rarely find drama sad or cry over fiction- unless it involves animals. Don't fuck around with animals. I'm still cross about how they left poor Mercy behind in episode one 😢

Furries · 01/02/2023 12:05

@CosyCoffee similar here, poor Shiva in TWD.

CosyCoffee · 01/02/2023 12:12

@Furries God yes! And the dire wolves and dragons in Game of Thrones! 😭

Furries · 01/02/2023 12:18

@CosyCoffee ha, yes. The point where I was sad about a dragon was a bit of an eye opener for me 🤣

This isn't a zombie program though. It's weird that people are comparing it to the walking dead tbh.

CosyCoffee · 01/02/2023 12:40

How is it NOT a zombie program?

Zombies are reanimated corpses. They died first. cordyceps exists, it just can't infect and take over humans, only insects. People take it as a supplement even.

It's like saying 28 days later is a zombie film.

Gets right on my wick that everything that involved infecting humans is lumped in with zombies.

CosyCoffee · 01/02/2023 12:51

Hmm I don't think a zombie has to be dead, just taken over by something that controls how they behave. Some definitions say this, some say a reanimated corpse. The original zombies in.Haiti were not dead but drugged in order to be controlled. Semantics I suppose.

Greatly · 01/02/2023 12:54

It's a zombie show. The game was a zombie game. I mean I know technically they are mushrooms but shrug

I thought episode 3 was really odd - I mean, what are the chances 😅 but then I'm pretty underwhelmed with the show anyway.

28 days later IS a zombie film. Come on. That's too specific and nerdy even for me.

CannibalQueen · 01/02/2023 12:58

I'll be honest - I've not managed to get past the baby being loaded on to the truck yet...

No it isn't. It's a rage virus. There's nothing zombie about it. Certainly not bumbling around for years.

It's just lazy lumping them in all together.

Greatly · 01/02/2023 13:00

The clickers are the least scary thing I've seen for a while. Dr Who costume levels of crap. A puffball mushroom hat does not a monster make.

CosyCoffee · 01/02/2023 13:07

@gamerchick do you consider Dracula a zombie? He's reanimated and bumbles around for years 😂

I think what differentiates a zombie is loss of personality and intellect, leaving only drive to feed and survive.

But I do understand your point and respect your nerdiness Smile

Robostripes · 01/02/2023 13:33

I’m not a gamer, DH is but hasn’t played this. We both decided to watch on the strength of the Guardian review and I think it’s really excellent so far. Watched ep 3 last night and wow - did not expect it to be so emotional! I was in tears - also had a lump in my throat in ep 1 when Sarah was killed but ep 3 was proper tears. Really amazing episode.

I’m really interested to see where it goes. Also, Pedro Pascal = hot!

Hoppinggreen · 01/02/2023 13:42

Not Zombies
In the last episode Joel specifically says that the dead can’t be infected .

Foxywood · 01/02/2023 13:49

I m confused - ep3 forwarded 10 years - then the survivors turn up looking just the same ….. hope it picks up again soon . Should have set it in U.K. then you’re more likely to ‘find’ others. The US is vast.

user1471561661 · 01/02/2023 14:54

Episode 3 went back to 2003 (I think) then did a series of time skips to bring us back to present day.

I guess werewolves can infect by a bite and I wouldn't class them as zombies but it is definitely within zombie apocalypse genre twd type genre to me. Human host bodies taken over by an infection/parasite/fungus that then causes infected to overwhelm survivors at a rapid pace causing an apocalypse. I call them zombies my son calls them clickers though!

Foxywood · 01/02/2023 17:44

There are levels of infection depending on how long the fungus has been growing in the host. ‘Clickers’ are the final stage, when their heads are entirely consumed by the fungus and they make clicking sounds as a form of echolocation because they are blind. If you have seen ep 2, what they encountered in the museum was a clicker.

He did that. Grin

I do get why people lump them all in to one thing though sort of, it is easier to lump it into one easy ball. I just don't get why it's being compared to TWD. There are memes all over saying the same thing. Tisnt anything like it. 😭

I think I'm a bit passionate about the undead being kept authentic.😆

user1471561661 · 02/02/2023 00:49

Ah thanks motherofhouseplants! What was with the weird infected kissing infected thing in the museum?!

Gamerchick I think episode 2 was the most different feeling to twd for me even though they had a museum episode... It felt a bit more movie or game like - not sure how to explain. Episode 1 however reminded me of the first episode of fear the walking dead and episode 3 reminded me of the Morgan episode or possibly the flowers episode of twd . Having said that I think part of the reason episode 3 worked so well is because anyone comparing to other similar films or tv series they have seen would not have expected that episode to go the way it did - maybe it will continue to surprise us more than shock us which would be great!

brittanyfairies · 02/02/2023 05:00

@user1471561661 I read an interview with one of the makers about the kissing scene in the museum and he explained that scene. Apparently the nature of the fungus is to spread, so the infected people are just complying with their nature. He said, we've only seen infected people chasing others and being violent because people are afraid of them and run, so obviously the infected chase and catch them. He wanted to show what would happen if someone didn't run from them, he said they're not inherently violent it's just their programming, hence the kiss, when someone just waited for them. Probably not explained very well, but it's early.

Although I found that kissing scene very disturbing.
