Is it weird to say no game spoilers? I've not played the game so don't know the game story line

Who else is watching?

The 1st 2 episodes were really good

But wow. Ep 3 is amazing.

I actually cried over characters I'd known for less than 1 hour

I think that was the best episode yet. I haven't seen the game, so don't know how it is suppose to end, but it does seem like there is a lot more still to cover than one hour will do. I don't know where they are planning on going now. I want to know why Ellie is immune, which feels like the point, but I could be wrong. Then what? Will be watching the next series for sure, but waiting untill they all drop so I can binge watch. Weekly episodes are driving me to distraction.

My Sky box has been on the blink for aeons. I finally got it to work and access the sky channels and watched the latest episode (8of 9). God it's grim

Or there is loads of gameplay online. Watch someone else play the game. Might scratch that itch a bit.

I can't actually play computer games (most), or watch someone play them as I get a form of motion sickness Blush

Same with Google maps street view.

Jeeze.

That was a tough watch.

Ive bloody accidentally seen a game spoiler as well!

Can't wait to see how it ends next week but I'm also kind of hoping that they somehow extend it to 2 series

Although I know they said the first series would cover the whole of the first game

I feel they could have at least doubled the number of episodes!

But then I'm used to TWD that took years to do anything

Spoiler alert!

How did Ellie know the stew was human meat?

The peado preacher motivation through me a bit too when he was trying to convince her to build a new world with him.

Did he just fancy her at first sight 🤢🤢 and think she would love him back?

Even worse he was a teacher before!

She didn't trust him from the get go, so was playing along to try to get out. So when she saw the blood and ear right there by the cell, she knew she wasn't getting out of there.

I'm not sure he was actually a teacher, he may have just said that to try to get the people to make him the leader. As he was never a preacher before the apocalypse either

I don't think he was looking for love, he wanted to have sex with her. The part when he tried to rape her and he said he likes the fight was (I think) why she was so brutal.

It was harsh. But this is what I like about this series, every episode is so different. I always watch each episode again a day or so later, and so much happens that sometimes I miss things on the first watch.

brittanyfairies · 07/03/2023 05:42

That was a brilliant episode, but I shouldn't have watched it just before I went to bed.

Actually could Ellie infect someone? She said, you're infected when she bit the guy, but of course killed him before we had the chance to see. But it's got me thinking could she infect others by biting them, kind of like a stealth assassin.

GCSEstress · 07/03/2023 08:13

Can I just double check that you don't actually see any of the aforementioned sexual violence? Sounds like Ellie manages to escape (and then some!) but there's nothing before or after is there? I draw the line at watching anything like that and didn't think I had to worry about that with this series.

The part is not focused on hugely no. It is a quick scene, the actions as a result definitely take the focus.

The ending had me welled up.

I did have a variety of emotions from this episode though.

It is really brief, though tbh I had to hide my eyes for a few seconds as I can't watch that sort of thing. I was really worried when I realised the plot was going in that direction, but it was handled well.

I totally missed an ear being seen

@isthismylifenow and @IClaudine thank you. Think we'll watch it early. Sounds like an adrenaline fest 😬

When she was in the cell, she looked at the blood on the floor (when he came in with the food), the ear was next to the blood.

There are so many little things that are easy to miss I find. I always watch each episode twice. Episode 3 with Bill and Frank I missed lots of small things.

I am not sure I can watch 8 again though.

Would be neat if biting people was the cure like a reverse zombie Wink quite a grim episode but agree well done and the last line was perfect

I wondered the same thing. More questions about her response to the infection I suppose… I just hope we get some answers!

Bookist · 07/03/2023 10:04

Absolutely loved how Joel said 'I got you baby girl' when Ellie hugged him. 'Baby girl' is what he called Sarah 😀

lookslikeitsgoingtosnow · 07/03/2023 10:29

I guessed they were eating humans when the guy came in with the chopped up meat and said it was Venison in an awkward stilted manner when asked what it was. The ear left under the butcher's bench then confirmed it! It really was a hard episode to watch, even my DH said the same, but still brilliant. We had to put on something lighthearted afterwards to try to forget it before going to bed!

Interestingly, Maisie Williams auditioned and was turned down. I just can't see anyone else in the role now

I don’t think she was turned down necessarily, she just ‘aged out’ while the show was in development and was too old to play the part by the time it went into production.

JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg · 07/03/2023 11:37

David was a complete failure as a man. Weak. Liked young girls, probably WAS a teacher for that reason, worshipped the germ, not God, saying it loves etc, then failing to do as the Commune did and properly plan and source food rather than eating dead flock members... awful (yet well executed) character.

Goodness me this episode was savage. I thought Joel was going to burst in and save Ellie at the end but she just saved herself, badass! I haven’t played the game or seen spoilers and I just can’t work out how they’re going to wrap it up in one more episode!

There's going to be another series

SPOILER for those who havent watched yet

He pins her down but doesn't get farther than that

I did see a few people on Twitter dryly observing that the secular communists were managing to organise and survive rather more effectively than the Christian sect Grin

Yes, but the second series will follow the plot of the second game. Next week’s episode will wrap up the narrative of the first game.

The HBO podcasts with the makers of the show are good. Neil Druckmann made the really moving point that in this episode, Ellie saves herself physically but Joel saves her emotionally 🥹

DuncinToffee · 07/03/2023 13:10

I have read a few reviews comparing this episode with the game. Apparently the game was even more intense as David wasn't an obvious creep from the start.

Yeah in the game he was an implied paedophile. In the show it was literally confirmed - I mean the lines of "there's no fear in love" and "the fighting is my favourite part" genuinely sickened me. DD also said he was unzipping his trousers but I didn't catch that. Overall just way, way creepier, it was horrifying.

gamerchick · 07/03/2023 20:23

Pretty much followed the game. Was a pain in the arse to play that bit. Wish they had done the bit at the sawmill though that showed Ellie trusting David for a bit.
