Is it weird to say no game spoilers? I've not played the game so don't know the game story line

Who else is watching?

The 1st 2 episodes were really good

But wow. Ep 3 is amazing.

I actually cried over characters I'd known for less than 1 hour

Only watched this episode tonight and it was possibly my favourite so far. Happy to read there will be a second series. Bella Ramsey is an incredible actress and I love how her relationship, as Ellie, has grown with Joel.
I thought David was creepy as fuck from the off. Cu*ty cult leader using violence and fear to ‘lead’. Thought the actor played the part really well.
Wish there were more than one more episode but that’s the way it is.

ladydimitrescu · 07/03/2023 23:47

Bella Ramsey is just phenomenal- I cannot get over the chokehold this series has on me! This episode was so well done, such a tough watch and had me in tears at the end when Joel held her. Watching her revert back to a child because she knows she's safe with him, my heart 😭

Dotellhimpike · 08/03/2023 10:33

Holy Jeebus but episode 8 was a hell of a watch. Going back to the previous episode, I thought Bella Ramsay's achingly sweet longing for her friend was enough to win her all the top prizes come awards season but episode 8? that was some really special acting. They manage to make her both a force to be reackoned with while never losing sight of the fact she is a child forced to grow up way too quickly. Most shows will have main characters and they talk about how they had to do bad things to surivive but never show it for fear of losing the audience's sympathy but in this episode we see both Joel and Ellie go places where we rare even see bad guys go, in terms of what they would do to other people.

As for Joel, I think seeing that his brother Tommy is now invested in his wife and child made Joel realise he was alone, and that helped him make the emotional shift in his relationship to Ellie, he is now to all intents and purposes her father. Ellie for her part has desperately wanted a father daughter relationship with him from the start but was too afraid of being rejected, just like she was afraid of being rejected by her friend if she committed and showed her feelings.

I wonder if there will be a Season 2 that is completely different from Game 2? Like with Handmaid's Tale they only had the one (short) book to work from but subsequent seasons ran with the general plot and were just as good as the first.

I don't want it to end! But also, I don't want to have to wait a week between episodes so for that reason if there ever is another season I'm going to wait til it's all been aired (and try to live under a rock!) so that I can binge it!

Dotellhimpike · 08/03/2023 14:05

One advanatage of the weekly format is that you can listen to some good podcasts about that week's episode.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 08/03/2023 15:01

There has been some very good BTS content. I saw a ‘creator‘ video this week where they mentioned that due to the filming schedule they filmed Joel and Ellie’s reunion before Bella had filmed the killing David scene. They had a stunt man and a sandbag set up for her to beat up and get in the right frame of mind.

Incidentally, if you like Bella Ramsey I highly recommend the film Catherine, Called Birdy. She is absolutely brilliant in it, as are Andrew Scott and Billie Piper, and it is suitable for ages 9ish up (as long as they can handle some chat about periods!).

I have read a few reviews comparing this episode with the game. Apparently the game was even more intense as David wasn't an obvious creep from the start.

I can confirm the Lakeside Resort section of the game is much longer than this episode and so stressful to play. It's the part I always hate getting to - not because it's bad, but because it's so intense. And David is just 🤢 the section in the restaurant is one of the toughest parts of the whole game imo and it's stresses me out so much lol

TitoMojito · 08/03/2023 22:35

"Tell them Ellie is the little girl who broke your fucking finger" was always one of my favourite moments in the game - glad it made it across Grin

Robostripes · 12/03/2023 14:55

I can’t wait for the finale!! I accidentally spoiled myself but I still can’t wait 😛

Same!!! I'm in the UK so I'm forcing myself up at 2am just to watch it. 😂The trailer looks absolutely phenomenal, so excited for the hospital

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 12/03/2023 15:45

When Joel held Ellie close and called her "baby girl" I fell apart.

I spent the entire episode feeling sick with dread because of the "scenes of sexual abuse" warning before it started, and knowing Ellie was on her own. I am also so glad she saved herself, that was great.

I agree Bella Ramsay has been absolutely superb. If she doesn't win an Emmy for this there is no justice.

IClaudine · 12/03/2023 16:32

I am thinking about watching at 2am so that I don't accidentally see any spoilers. My DH thinks I am a bit mad.

IClaudine · 12/03/2023 16:33

I watched some of the game version on YouTube. Right at the start Joel calls his daughter baby girl.😢

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 12/03/2023 16:53

I totally get it @IClaudine - I used to do the same for Game Of Thrones

Robostripes · 12/03/2023 17:09

2am watching is proper dedication. I have work tomorrow so I don’t think I can do that! I usually work from home on a Monday and DH and I have been watching it together at lunchtime so I plan to do that and seeing as I’ve already accidentally spoiled myself, it won’t matter too much if I see (more) spoilers!

The baby girl moment broke me too 😭😭😭

He did in the television show as well, which is why it was so moving.

MotherOfHouseplants · 12/03/2023 19:11

‘Baby girl’ is really important. He hasn’t said it for twenty years and then only person he ever said it to back then was Sarah.

Genuinely breaks my heart. Ellie has definitely changed from just being "cargo" to being close to his daughter.

TitoMojito · 13/03/2023 12:50

Watching the final episode now and seeing Ashley Johnson (who played Ellie in the games) as Ellie's mother had me crying 30 seconds into the episode 😂

Robostripes · 13/03/2023 13:24

Just finished watching and I am not ok 😭😭😭

Botw1 · 13/03/2023 13:41

OK.

An amazing episode.

I accidentally saw a game spoiler so I was waiting for something to happen that didn't.

And now I don't know whether to just say fuck it and go the whole hog to find out.

When I first started watching it was on the basis that series 1 would be a complete story with a resolution (because it was based on the first game that had a defined ending)

Im glad they've not done that because it has been excellent but it's a stressful watch!

The casting of Bella Ramsey has been amazing.

I actually for a minute thought that the pregnant woman was Ellie.

The scene in the hospital, again, I can see how that would play out in a game.

Poor Ellie. I know she doesn't believe Joel.

I also don't believe the Dr's theory.

Or at least, I understand the theory but I doubt they would have been able to actually achieve it

Roll on series 2!

Joel saying "It wasn't time that did it" was my breaking point😭

Spoilers

I played the game with DH when it first came out, before DS1 was born, and remember us having quite heated discussions about the morality of Joel's choice for weeks afterwards. At the time, DH would have sacrificed Ellie for the greater good if the game had allowed an option - watching it with him ten years and two children later he admits he's done a complete 180 and would do exactly what Joel did if he were in the same shoes now. I still feel, as I did then, that Joel made the right choice, as Ellie didn't know that the procedure was going to be fatal so really she had no choice for him to take away, and I never felt confident the procedure would actually work - for an awful moment when playing it I thought she would die for nothing and it would be the bleakest of bleak endings.

Poor Ellie, you can tell she wants to believe him at the end, but knows in her heart of hearts that he's lying to her. It was such a perfect adaptation though.

Robostripes · 13/03/2023 15:08

I’m 100% on team Joel and would make the same decision for sure (except that I lack his sniper skills so I wouldn’t have made it to rescue her!)

So many emotional moments in this ep - the giraffes, “It wasn’t time that did it”, “I’ll follow you wherever you go” 😭 I feel quite tearful still just thinking about it all. Pedro Pascal absolutely killed it in this episode and basically I just love him 🥹

HollyGolightly4 · 13/03/2023 17:23

The giraffes were wonderful! Completely not what I expected from the episode (I don't know what I did expect) but emotional, powerful and great TV!

Botw1 · 13/03/2023 17:28

Does anyone else feel the pacing of the series as a whole was off?

Maybe I need to rewatch it all in a go
