Apologies if there's already a thread, I couldn't see one.

Anyone else watching?

Supernatural thriller set on an oil rig off Scotland.

It's got Iain Glen (that's me, I'm in 😁), Martin Compston, Marc Bonnar, Richard People, Ser Alliser Thorne from GOT, a new Scottish actress (who's good) and Rochendra Sandall.

I'm deliberately not reading any reviews as I'm enjoying it and don't want to be put off.

Watching this now and something is really bothering me about the way it's filmed but cant explain exactly what. The colours are too vibrant and the cgi too perfect. Also the way the camera swoops around makes me feel dizzy. It's like watching those interval scenes on computer games that are so good they almost look like real life 🤣 Whenever movies/TV shows are shot like this they have no atmosphere whatsoever and the acting seems wooden and fake. If it was dark and moody with appropriate background music I could probably get into it more. Maybe I'm just old!

Absolutely agree. Thought all this myself whilst watching it. I've kind of switched off actually. Would be so much better shot in grittier windier setting. Feels like a sitcom shot in a studio a lot of the time.

Etinoxaurus · 07/01/2023 21:11

Loving it! We’ve nearly finished it. It’s a bit scooby doo 😉😂

CampervanKween · 07/01/2023 21:19

When the chef started wanging on about learning lessons from the destruction we are wreaking on the planet I'm afraid I gave up. Also the loss of my personal favourite actor didn't help.

Am now trying The Last Ship on advisement of this thread.

gawditswindy · 07/01/2023 21:19

I think the filming through the window is supposed to suggest that they're being watched by the weather, or the sea, or whatever the feck is stalking them.

Ginger1982 · 07/01/2023 21:47

Just started episode 2. Pish so far. Not sure I can be arsed continuing.

Ooh. I wonder if that's the same one as me. Grin

I just watched 5 episodes tonight I enjoyed it. I'm drawn to it as work in O&G and have worked offshore. Obviously a lot of it doesn't ring true with regards to offshore life but I am still really enjoying it.

poorbuthappy · 07/01/2023 22:24

Ep 6 dragged a bit for me. But loved the ending.

Duckingella · 08/01/2023 00:50

My family and I enjoyed it;it's something abit different;do you think there will be a season two?

ripandhishorse · 08/01/2023 11:46

I've made it to the end after an early rise this morning. For such a good cast, I don't think I've seen such complete rubbish TV in a long time. Dreadful acting from them all and a terrible story.

I wonder if prime overpaid them to make such drivel.

ripandhishorse · 08/01/2023 12:47

I appreciate I switched off in places but why didn’t they just use the life boats and get off the rig?

I don't think it was the acting so much as the direction, script and overall production. It would be a hell of a coincidence for so many established actors to all turn in a dud performance at the same time. Saying that, there's only so much you can do with a crappy script. At one point, Emily Hampshire's character says something like "I used to dig up dinosaurs, but now I just work for them". My 8yo could write wittier dialogue.

I8toys · 08/01/2023 18:43

Watched until the end and did like the ending. I can't put my finger on what I disliked about it. The interior shots were fine but the outside and the CGI sky and sea were really distracting. It was sort of cartoon like in places. Even the light on their faces and the lack of wind in their hair bugged me. It seemed too clinical and clean cut on the exterior shots.

BethDuttonsTwin · 08/01/2023 18:49

Gave up after episode 2. It’s clearly not low budget, yet it feels like it is iyswim? Crap dialogue and maybe it’s the editing? Stilted, and even the reliable Martin Compton is delivering some of his lines like he can’t believe he’s having to utter this drivel.

DisforDarkChocolate · 08/01/2023 18:53

I thought it was absolutely crap. I love a bit of supernatural woo, this has a terrible script delivered by excellent actors who must have had a sudden tax bill to take this on.

TheMagicSword · 08/01/2023 18:57

We watched it this week. I filed it as one of those “so near and yet so far” series - quite watchable and with a few tweaks could have been fantastic, but came out a bit bleurgh (technical term there).

BestwisheswarmestregardstoJesusMaryJoseph · 08/01/2023 19:01

Emily Hampshire (who is Canadian) and Martin Compston’s characters just had no chemistry together. It’s such a shame because I think the dialogue was so bad it distracted from what could’ve been a great programme.

Mouthfulofquiz · 08/01/2023 19:07

I binged the whole lot in one day and might watch the last 2 or 3 episodes again just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. I liked it a lot.

ButterfliesandMoths · 08/01/2023 19:15

Binged watched this yesterday, thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes not the best script in the world but by the end of it I was thinking I hope they do a season 2.

WandaWonder · 08/01/2023 19:17

I too think we are not meant to like the American one, who I think sounds Scottish sometimes, but I don't like the way she is playing it so she feels out of place in it

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/01/2023 19:17

We’ve got one more episode to watch tonight - I’m really enjoying it and don’t want it to be over.

If I like this, what else might I like?

BarrelOfOtters · 08/01/2023 19:41

On episode 2 and undecided….agree about the acting and CGI and script….it’s all not as good as it should be given the great cast.

Awrite · 08/01/2023 21:14

Just finished it. Definitely think there could be a season 2.

Agree re lack of chemistry between Martin and the American. I wonder if they were playing it that way as you'd need to hide a relationship on a rig.

2 episodes in and not mad about it. Acting seems poor and every cliché in the book is used. Really only watched it for Ian Glen but he's no Ser Jorah in this.

It's a bit like The Abyss but no where near as good.

sneakyrussian · 09/01/2023 01:10

It's horrendous! Couldn't finish the first episode! Not a single likeable or none cliche character. The trade Union rep attacking the medic???? The "strong" American female lead 🙄. Incase you're wondering I didn't like it 🤣.
