I agree the attitudes to rape in this show are rather modern

I'd be annoyed if I was Trixie I spend hours in the kitchen slaving away and then a dinner party guest whips up the perfect eggs Benedict

Oh but Cyril in this episode 😍
I'm glad he's still in it.

A nun would have known that rape inside marriage didn't exist in the 1960s?! Well obviously it did exist but wasn't a criminal offence.

In reality that woman would have had two choices, go back to the abusive husband (and hope he doesn't kill her) or give her children up and live in poverty.

The modern day take on it sugar coats the reality sadly, depressingly for lots of women not much has changed.

Divorce was possible then and some women did go it alone. Marital rape was not covered by the law but other forms of violence were even though they might have had to work harder to prove it. Benefit was available in the form of National Assistance and, later, Supplementary Benefit. Obviously it was harder then than it is now but not impossible.

I don't suppose everyone knew the law didn't cover marital rape as it probably didn't come up in conversation for most people. When the law was finally changed I wasn't aware that it hadn't been illegal before.

It's obvious Matthew is going to be a good guy. They are trying to give Trixie a happy relationship at last.

I agree. Although personally I think he’s a right twat Grin

YearoftheDrama · 15/01/2023 22:25

My problem with Matthew is he is the most blatant Plot Device to ever make it into a show. He has no purpose beyond Plot Device.

Nonnatus House is in dire financial straits and has been for years. The writers are bored of this storyline and need to move on. Enter Plot Device Matthew with his bottomless wallet.

Trixie is really getting on a bit and they need to get her a husband because her role as Young Fashion Beauty no longer works. Don't worry, we'll marry her off to Plot Device Matthew.

This abused woman needs some legal advice. Will we find her a solicitor? No! Bring in Plot Device Matthew.

Good article here www.aljazeera.com/features/2021/6/15/the-long-road-to-criminalising-rape-within-marriage

Erin pizzey established first refuge in chiswick in 1971. So late 1960s more awareness already?

PriamFarrl · 15/01/2023 22:59

I was surprised at the attitude to rape too. Then it would have been seen that as a married woman that was just part of the deal.

Sumthingsweet · 16/01/2023 01:10

I know right always been a fan of the show kept me me company feeding my babies. I always cry when watch it I think it’s the heartwarming music and everything be ok vibe - was the NHS really like this ???? I actually look at it with a more cynical Lens now lol maybe the pre menopause hormones setting in as we know the harsh reality of overstretched NHs now and actually everything isn’t always rosy with home baked cakes and goodwill to all .

agree with the new Nun - what self respecting nun lies ? Lol

but I still do love watching I love the music at the beginning it makes me feel warm n fuzzy and hopeful ! lol I want to believe it - I Do

Sumthingsweet · 16/01/2023 01:11

So true lol or to buy someone something !

I haven't seen the episode because I'm in the US, and we are behind the UK in the airing of the series. But marital rape was definitely emerging as a concern of second wave feminists focused on domestic violence in the 1960s and '70s in the UK and in the US. (The first states to outlaw marital rate in the US did so in the 1970s.)

Not the punching though. Plus if everyone thought the same back then regarding marital rape/racism/gay relationships nothing would ever have changed. There were always people questioning these things. So called 'Women's Lib' (hate that term) was a thing then.

I was a young teenager at the time. I had a friend at primary school whose Mum was divorced and that would have been around 1965 - she wasn't living in terrible poverty although might have had some hard times at some point. By 1975 I was working in a benefits office in Bristol and there were single mothers who had been 'on the books' for years.

RocketPanda · 16/01/2023 10:01

Marital rape and domestic violence were certainly on the radar of feminists in the 1960s. As was of its time ( and to a huge degree nowadays) male opinion and social views are regarded as the norm.
I wonder will Sr V start a refuge or advice centre.

Coffeecreme · 16/01/2023 11:14

trixie did a cordon bleu cookery class
thats the difference
not home cooking
she made cornbeef hash in the end

very strange shoe horning in the nun shouting about Rape, jsut for the viewers knowledge - but i guess we need to be educated!

Coffeecreme · 16/01/2023 11:16

oh agree about the violent and abuse of course - why couldnt the police charge him for that

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/01/2023 11:46

I suppose a lot of women now in their 20s would assume marital rape had always been illegal. It's been included as a bit of recent history.

auntgina · 16/01/2023 12:18

I'm also surprised the nun didn't know about marital rape. I've forgotten her name but I liked that she lied at the police station to try to gain access to the house.

Also love Nurse Crane. Reminds me of a relative who was also a nurse in similar time period; very capable and to be relied upon in an emergency.

Sister Veronica
Wasn't keen on her but she surpassed herself in this episode.

Nice to see the puzzle completed . lol

I'm in my 40s and was shocked to read it wasn't illegal until 1991 (in England).

icanwearwhatiwant · 16/01/2023 17:08

I loved Phyllis with Nancy in this episode. Sat down with her and offered to help instead of being all judgy.
I want a Phyllis to be my best mate in real life!!

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/01/2023 17:22

Phyllis is lovely.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 16/01/2023 17:46

Phyllis is my favourite.

Because the first legislation to criminalise domestic violence didn’t come into force until 1976 shockingly

Coffeecreme · 16/01/2023 19:18

That is shocking @Katrinawaves

Toddlerteaplease · 16/01/2023 19:42

We've already had the 'Trixie trying to cook' storyline before.
