Why did the blind man lie about having no family? Did I miss something?

Scared of losing his independence and having to move out of the East End

It was Sister Evangelina. I noticed it at the time as it reminded me of a nun at the convent school I attended in the 70s - who also rode a scooter! The girls at the school thought it was hilarious.

Yes, years ago when Jenny was still around! As the guy who became her boyfriend (who later died) was trying to fix it up.

I wasn't impressed with Dr Turner loudly discussing his patients health issues first in the middle of the very busy clinic and then again at his surgery, he didn't even bother to check there was nobody in the waiting room before he started discussing a patient with Mrs Higgins! Was patient confidentiality not a thing in the 60's?!

Madeintowerhamlets · 09/01/2023 12:54

Thanks to the poster that said the new series is a lot better than the Christmas special. It’s definitely more gritty & I’ve been enjoying it so far. I thought Martin Fowler was great as the new dad. I hope Lucille hasn’t been written out permanently- the actress must have other projects in real life.

creamcoffee · 09/01/2023 12:56

re dr turner, i think the husband was hidden from view.
but yes, that was a gaff

creamcoffee · 09/01/2023 12:56

was it actually martin fowler?
wow

I'm often in GP practices as part of my job, they still do it to this day. I've heard loads about people I don't know because the GP is talking to the nurse or something right in the middle of reception and I'm just sat there waiting to collect a prescription for a service user!

What was the actual point of the Maypole storyline? It didn’t pay out in any way. Is it just shoe horned in so we knew what time of year it was?

creamcoffee · 09/01/2023 13:24

interesting that lucille was asked why she wanted to see the doctor,
i thought that was a modern development,
anyway it was nice to see her in her own clothes.

The lady with breast cancer, married to Martin Fowler....

Was that the first time we've seen the father at the birth in CTM history ? (It got to just before I was born and DDad always said that my birth was the only one he was even expected to be in the hospital for).

No there have definitely been fathers there before. I think it’s becoming much more common in the show now.

I reckon so Sister Monica Joan takes over on that sort of stuff

PuttingDownRoots · 09/01/2023 13:36

Matthew was at his sons birth.

Actually... it seemed to be common in the Covid filmed episode with their odd positioning of all the actors.

I just assumed (maybe wrongly!) that she thought it was about a patient and was going to get their records out 😀

Yes. I think there was a storyline about it starting a few series ago - Sister Evangaline was dead set against it, but the younger midwives were all for it.

Since then we've seen it more and more.

Elderflower14 · 09/01/2023 16:33

Derek was with Audrey when they had baby Elizabeth at the maternity home after baby Christopher was born very disabled at home..

Why are there two threads about CTM?

Toddlerteaplease · 09/01/2023 17:37

@Clawdy I started one for the Christmas special. Think it disappeared down the list so the OP of this one thought there wasn't one and started this one.

Oh I think I read something about that, they hired actor couples rather than individuals because then they'd be alright to interact and make it look more natural.

I think the maypole does set the time of year and also gave SMJ something to do (which fitted in well, I think). It's light and shade. If too much of one or the other is stripped away, it's unbalanced. I really enjoyed this episode and thought the pace was good.

I'd say Dr Turner discussing a patient in the reception of the surgery without thinking is probably of the era. I like that they still put small gaffs in like that, in otherwise it would be in danger of being too modern.

I thought that Trixie getting huffy over no home birth for Lilian Reynolds due to the cancer treatment schedule was a bit jarring, as life-saving treatment would naturally need to take precedence over birth plan preferences. Trixie is a midwife so is representing the ante/postnatal treatment, but she is also a nurse who would understand the full picture.

auntgina · 13/01/2023 18:02

What year are we up to with this now? The late 1960s?

auntgina · 13/01/2023 18:05

I agree that the chemistry between Trixie and Matthew is poor. And though I like Trixie, as she's been there since the beginning I think, I sometimes think she sounds more like a socialite with her love and knowledge of high end designer clothes and correct etiquette.
