Anyone watching? Dr smug unfortunately appears fully recovered from the train crash.

Well that was a rollercoaster!

I was expecting some guilt from Dr Smugface for failing to recognise pretty classic symptoms of psychosis/schizophrenia which nearly resulted in a dead baby/dead Cyril.

I can't believe Lucille, honestly what a cold hearted cow! Poor Cyril.

eggandonion · 29/01/2023 21:17

Shes going to return with a baby, either her own or one she has adopted.
Where is Matthew's mother?

Am I the only one who finds Cyril sickly sweet and insipid?

I think so, yes

I can’t stand him.

KrasiTime · 29/01/2023 21:35

I like Cyril. I assume the storyline is to do with the actress wanting to explore other opportunities.

No, me too.

Iknownothing · 29/01/2023 21:47

I think next week we’ll have Dr Turner mansplaining the menopause to Sheila.
And then carrying on with his ‘mansplaining workshops’

Lol Timothy as a bathing attendant.

Is he about to meet some bikinied lovely?

Nice to see Timmy mansplaining skin diseases to the bath house ladies.

I like Cyril, much more than I like Lucille but I do feel like in the last few episodes they're shoehorning him into plot lines just to keep him in the show.
Without Lucille there he doesn't belong.

Imagine having to wait days for a pregnancy test result

When I was pregnant in 1979 it took two weeks and you had to be two weeks late to start with.

InMySpareTime · 29/01/2023 22:16

My cringe was cringing at the nun talking about condoms to a bunch of dockers. What level of expertise could she possibly have in those matters!

I wonder if that’s why he had a part in this week’s storyline, to give him a reason.

Testina · 29/01/2023 22:30

I’m in the insipid camp for Cyril, so don’t really care.

It’s irritatingly unbelievable that Lucille wouldn’t have written that she was earning her keep though. Just a stupid thing. They wanted to write in something that would be good TV for those watching Cyril - but it’s just not believable.

Mammyloveswine · 29/01/2023 22:38

Honest to god Trixie did nothing to save Matthews dad!! Mind that scene hit very close to home as my mam died suddenly almost identically, collapsing in the bathroom so that was a bit of a kick in the gut!

It was quite the funeral outfit too that Trixie wore!

Pleased shielas not pregnant, def going to be a menopause storyline.

Very much doubt that Matthew would be able to disarm Spencer 🤦‍♀️ but of course he has to be the hero Hmm.

Fred's wife is really pissing me off at the minute... she's so bloody hoity toity!

Can't stand that new nun...

Oh and how long was the poor rabbit squashed into that box before bloody doctor Dolittle finally presented it to the child who's birthday it was?!

PaperwhiteTheGhost · 29/01/2023 22:47

Sheila is only about 40-42 (I remember the consultant saying she was 36 when she was in hospital before she had her baby)!!! That's really young for menopause and also really not old to have a baby!

I now feel ridiculously old TTC at 36 😬

As a paramedic I was absolutely screaming at Trixie to start CPR, but there were no paramedics until the 90s and so no drugs- I guess the survival rate of out of hospital cardiac arrest was even lower than it is now.

AnotherPigeon · 29/01/2023 23:02

I went off to google CPR to find out if it was a thing and I was trying to remember if we’d ever seen an adult on CTM get CPR.

AnotherSpare · 29/01/2023 23:24

Is anyone else just not enjoying CTM anymore? It's gone off on such a tangent from what it was, I'm losing interest.
I absolutely loved it at the beginning. Gritty true-life portrayal of how hard life was in the East End, moments of brutal sorrow peppered with moments of pure joy when a new baby arrived, mixed with some of the life developments of the nuns and midwives.
These days, so much time is given to Matthew Aylward. He's not even from the east end. Ok his family owns some buildings, but he doesn't even live there.
Tonight's episode was mostly Mathew arguing with his dad, Mathew getting a job, Trixie chatting to Matthew's dad, Cyril doing religious stuff with a schizophrenia patient, regular Turner family drama.
I'm bored!

RandomCatGenerator · 29/01/2023 23:26

Jourdain11 · 29/01/2023 17:25

She seemed as though she was a bit more experienced, as though she'd been there maybe for 6 months or a year already? When Jenny is all cringy over the squalor and smells she gives her a bit of a "talk to"; in the vein of, I felt the same, but you get used to it and admire people for coping with it.

Jenny is 23 in the first series, so I'd guess that Cynthia and Trixie were of a similar age, or even a little older. 23, 24. Which makes Trixie 35ish now. Positively ancient!

But in all seriousness, I am 35 and wouldn't want to be room-sharing in a convent!

And with deeply immature Nancy too…

RandomCatGenerator · 29/01/2023 23:27

Cynthia was so lovely. His storyline just seemed so needless and horrible - and then they wrote her out :(

@Mammyloveswine “Very much doubt that Matthew would be able to disarm Spencer 🤦‍♀️ but of course he has to be the hero Hmm.”

It’s annoying me sooooo much!
So unnecessary.
Cyril grabs baby, gets stabbed, gets out. Spencer locked in room.
The police would have been called - they didn’t need a character to go back into the room.
But no, we had to have Saint X Superhero Matthew again.

The Spencer storyline was just odd. Literally no build up to it at all. All the other “father” stories have had some depth, even in one episode. Like horrible DV man with wife going to hostel - we saw him in action, met him as menacing host to his own wedding. With Spencer, I felt like I’d missed the first 10 minutes.

As for the camera work! That just seemed so unsophisticated. The acting should be strong enough not to need jerky close ups.

If this were my first CTM episode, I wouldn’t watch again 🤷🏻‍♀️

AnotherPigeon · 29/01/2023 23:37

I really didn't like the Spencer storyline, I thought it was lazy and clichéd. They've dealt with lots of difficult storylines quite well in the past, even with Dr Turner saving the day in clunky and unbelievable ways. But for a schizophrenia storyline we have to go for the old trope of a man turning violent all of a sudden? It's just lazy.

I was screaming "why has he gone in?" Also it looked like Cyril was stabbed in the chest but then he just had his arm in a sling?

Poor Cyril also having bloody Timothy reassuring "it's not hit a major artery".., he didn't even undo his shirt to actually assess the wound ffs!

AnotherPigeon · 29/01/2023 23:37

Oh and Dr Turner and his sudden "I think I know what this is" like none of the symptoms had been there before? Fucks sake.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/01/2023 23:40

I did wonder of Lucille is actually on her way Home and she wants to surprise Cyril so got her family to say she was at work. Though in second thoughts, that's a mean joke to play on Cyril.
