They have a lovely chemistry I think! Much better than Trixie and Matthew!

I want this to be Trixies happy ending, she definitely deserves it. I wouldn't want Matthew and Nancy to get together.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 22/01/2023 20:57

Though I'm kind of on the side of the old white blokes on the necessity of regular training. Sorry Phyllis.

But she is being quite intensely annoying to Matthew. The worst of her comes out around him.

RandomCatGenerator · 22/01/2023 20:58

Trixie it is.

ApolloandDaphne · 22/01/2023 20:58

Where was the other Turner daughter?

Mammyloveswine · 22/01/2023 21:00

Why was Shiela getting all dolled up?!

LIZS · 22/01/2023 21:00

She was the first to vom.

CarPoor · 22/01/2023 21:01

I think Nancy will develop a crush on Matthew but ultimately he will chose Trixie. She can't lose another man to one of the other midwives, even if he does make her intensely annoying

PinkFrogss · 22/01/2023 21:03

I think Sister MJ is going to die, she’s suddenly much more involved in the storylines and I think it’s the writers attempt to make her death more significant

ApolloandDaphne · 22/01/2023 20:58

Sat mournfully looking into a bucket probably.

PinkFrogss · 22/01/2023 21:07

I’m assuming the board will be the next big threat to Nonnatus House now Matthew has fixed their money issues.

Perhaps he can pay some East end gangsters to take them out

Elderflower14 · 22/01/2023 21:07

We had a sun lounger like Sheila's...

Silly question, what was the retirement age in 1968?

60 for women I think

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/01/2023 21:19

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 22/01/2023 21:12

60 for women I think

A teaching colleague of mine was reluctantly forced to retire at 60 in around 1990. The law changed sometime afterwards. I couldn't wait to get out when I was 60 although I had to wait 6 years to get my State Pension.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 22/01/2023 21:20

Not all unmarried women are lesbians, I know it's hard to believe but some women are happily single 😉 Millicent's comment about treating getting older the same as she treated unwanted attention from men 'ignore them and eventually they go away' cracked me up.

Dr mansplain turner was on mansplain over drive tonight 🙄 every time he speaks I want to put pins in my eyes!!

InMySpareTime · 22/01/2023 22:18

Why was Dr Turner exempt from quarantine? One minute he's actually handling infected nappies, the next he's holding a GP surgery in Nonnatus, and having a meeting (that should have been a phone call) with Sr Julienne.

CarPoor · 22/01/2023 22:20

Not sure why the board are coming at Nonnatus house for being old fashioned and different when the chief doctor is literally a medical pioneer?

He's been front and centre for several medical developments over the last 40yrs. Diphtheria, TB, thalidomide. He's also a top surgeon, GP, police surgeon.

He's immune, probably invented a quick Vaccine

Clawdy · 22/01/2023 22:43

I seem to remember the midwives in the first series all had incredibly posh voices, like Trixie.

Testina · 22/01/2023 22:52

I know that men have all the power, and even more so in the late 60s…
But did we have to have Matthew putting the press off like that on the phone?
I know it’s unrealistic for a woman to turn up with all the cash, but a woman (many in the series) could have delivered the same line to the press.
So let’s have less Male Saviour from that smug wooden twerp please!

Testina · 22/01/2023 22:54

I actually disagree that there’s chemistry on screen between Nancy and Matthew.
I think it’s that Nancy has chemistry full stop. She can act, and her character is engaging.
Matthew and Trixie have one dimensional characters and are both thoroughly wooden.

ArcaneWireless · 22/01/2023 22:56

You would have put your savings on triffictimmyturner shining at med school. His domestos dad (kills all known germs apparently) has probably been teaching him everything he knows from the crib days. A bite of the rusk with every correct diagnosis.

Bloody loved SMJ for the 99. And the tuppenny cone. The dog gets that in this house. (No chocolate though) And stepping up.

Fair play to Nurse Crane for having a pop at the know it all doc. Wish she’d stuck the pump somewhere dark. Mr Walsh 🖕🏼 Good on her for settling Gobby Simone. And for getting the baby squeaking 🥲. Lovely solid touchable familiar Phyllis.

Who was made to stand in front of pompous cocks. I heard no respect from him either. Good on you SMJ.

Nance is going to be on Matty like a labrador on chips given a sniff of beef dripping…

They are going all big on the loveyouloveyouloveyous with Trixie and Matt are they not? I smell a tragedy coming. Doof doof doof doof doof doofdoofdoofdoof.

Poor Reggie and his wonky thyroid - he made me a bit emosh. And can I just say I bloody love Cyril.

The patterned sunbed. Memories. 🥲

Testina · 22/01/2023 22:59

Something that keeps annoying me in multiple episodes with Trixie and Shelagh in particular… how often they look panicked.
When the baby had diarrhoea.
When 111 sent me into Children’s A&E with exactly that diarrhoea with my baby, nobody looked panicked. They were calm, reassuring and professional.
Every time there is Something Wrong, those two have facial expressions that would scare the shit out the parent.
Unlike Phyllis who can look realistically concerned, but keep a nice reassuring expression even as she’s saying, “tell them we need the flying squad”.
Shelagh’s the worst for it.
Trixie gets more professional as she gets on with it, but initial reaction often as panicked as Shelagh.

Testina · 22/01/2023 23:01

I do see why it looks like a build up for Nancy and Smug Woodentop Saviour. But I just don’t think it’s that kind of show.
Her realising she fancies him and getting a transfer out of the show, yes. But not getting involved. Just not the vibe.
