I love Ghosts and apparently the US version has had really good reviews. So pleased to see it on BBC iPlayer. Looking forward to giving this a go.

I think I'm finding it weird that I'm used to seeing the HH actorst as lots of different historical figures.

In the American one I'm just seeing the annoying man from The Good Place, and the PR woman from The Mentalist.

Although it was only this series I didn't call Alison "Barbara", so there's time to get used to them!

UWhatNow · 24/11/2022 23:11

You cannot replicate British dead-pan which is what most of the humour in ‘Ghosts’ relies on. It just doesn’t work with Americans.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 25/11/2022 13:23

I’ve watched them all now, I enjoyed them! Not the same but as others have said treat it as a different programme.

I think it’s got better as it went on - episodes 12,15,16,17 and 18 were good. Loved 16.

Splattsville · 26/11/2022 09:14

I love the UK Ghosts, and having watched all of the US one over the last few days I really like that one as well. It's produced by the UK ghosts, and you can see that they've kept the same feeling of the original, while making some adjustments for a US audience.

I agree it got better as it went on, although I loved the D&D episode (as an occasional D&D player).

PuttingDownRoots · 26/11/2022 09:24

Watched 10 episodes now. Definitely improving.

AmyandPhilipfan · 26/11/2022 09:26

I've watched them all now and it definitely did grow on me. I got to care more about the characters. I will keep watching if they make another series.

TarquinOliverNimrod · 26/11/2022 09:40

The US ghost characters are watchable but lack the charm of their UK counterparts. The US Mike and Alison are pretty lame and unforgettable. The woman verges on annoying, too priggish.

They've already done another series apparently, not sure when we'll get it over here though.

Definitelycross · 26/11/2022 15:14

I'm on episode 2 and I really like it

Flabbers · 30/11/2022 23:13

Why remake something so much worse? Exposition, no nuance, no chemistry, characters stand around posed, unlikeable livings

WarriorsComeOutToPlayaaay · 01/12/2022 11:02

I've started to warm to it. It is different to the UK version and the cast lacks that warmth and camaraderie but it does have some very good (original) one liners and different story lines that actually work quite well.

I really don't like it.

I don't like how everything is overexplained. If they could just hold back a bit it would be so much funnier - and maybe they could put off some of the poignancy of Ghosts.

I don't like the US Mike and Alison - he has a horrible voice and she has that weird thing where you have no idea how old she is. They're where bland and annoying meet.

ClaribelLowLieth · 01/12/2022 11:46

*pull off

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 01/12/2022 12:00

The first few were fairly dire, but the later ones got better once they stopped trying to copy the UK format. I think too the UK actors had professionaly worked together for years which then made it easier to believe that the ghosts had also lived together for years, there is that chemistry that is apparent in the dynamics. I don't think you can recreate that overnight. I liked some of the story lines and concepts.

Question is could you franchise it out to make an Australian version?

IsadoraQuagmire · 01/12/2022 12:01

I've been bingeing it. Only 4 more episodes left and I love it so much I don't want it to be over. I love all the characters so much, it really makes me realise that I don't like any of the characters in the original at all. I only watched that because I like the concept but it's never made me laugh.

ZandathePanda · 24/11/2022 21:20

Damnations, you’re all right. I don’t think they have much contact though. I think there’s lots more in the US version then they talk about ghost sex. Which changes the dynamics of ghost ‘life’ I think to something less ‘other’ and more normal living human iyswim.

Didn't Mary and Robin have a bit of a fling in the uk version? As well as fanny and humphrey?

See I like the US Mike, he's much nicer, not as annoying. Doesn't play that useless husband role. He even has a relationship of sorts with Pete! Mike is always just annoyed by the uk ghosts. ( and Mike's actor isn't that great at actually acting imo)

Agree about US Alison though, UK Alison is much funnier.

LIZS · 01/12/2022 17:57

It has got better but don't find the US ghosts likeable characters or particularly witty. I think it shows how much subtlety is in the physical theatre of the UK cast as well as their history as a team and the understated writing.

mcdog · 01/12/2022 18:01

Not a patch on the uk version...however: if you forget you've ever seen the UK version it's quite good.

Agree with PP saying it gets better further along the episodes you get.

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 01/12/2022 22:28

We’re about halfway through now. There are some things I really like - that there are more ghosts knocking around in the world, and that the husband has more involvement in the whole ghost thing. Some of the one liners can be very good. But definitely agree that you’ve got to forget about the original version as much as you can, it’s not particularly aiming to be the same show at all.

As a PP mentioned, the one thing hugely lacking is that camaraderie between the actors. I always got a sense that the HH actors wrote the characters around the period they enjoy playing the most - after all, Ben Willbond has always clearly loved being the military characters.

But it’s really not that bad at all as it’s settling into itself. Probably proves the concept really is such a good one!

Shunkleisshiny · 23/11/2022 09:02

I agree, it is a very pale imitation and is lacking that 'something' that makes the U.K. version so great. Plus there is only one Pat, Kitty, Julian, Thomas, Robin, Fanny, The Captain, and of course Mary. Not forgetting Alison and Mike.
On another note has anyone else noticed Julian is doing the voiceover for the Tesco Christmas ad? Family, Family, Family!!!!

Yes I recognised his voice straight away.

Series 2 is now on iplayer. Very quietly, no fanfare😁

We watched a few and then DD asked if she had to watch the rest.

I like the way they temporarily introduced a new ghost, but it's just irritating.

mogtheexcellent · 30/08/2023 18:18

Ive had a boring couple of days at work so binged them in the background while i edited 1000s of photos. Better than first series i thought. I really hate the isaac/nigel storyline though.

Good to see Mathew baynton in one episode as a terrible actor playing the Pat charcter. And we found out what happened to the singer lady (im crap with names).

Its never going to be as good as the BBC version though. I think the having more ghosts in general and interacting with other houses/places ghosts dilutes it a bit.

AmyandPhilipfan · 01/09/2023 13:20

I've watched all the second series and really enjoyed it. I've warmed to Pete. And quite like Trevor, Isaac and Thorfinn. And Hetty, Flower and Alberta have grown on me. Im still not keen on the Native American. He seems like someone from modern times wearing a costume. And personality wise he's just a bit 'blah.'
