I love Ghosts and apparently the US version has had really good reviews. So pleased to see it on BBC iPlayer. Looking forward to giving this a go.

Oooh, I'm putting iponmmy list of Christmas I player binging
I just watched uk ghosts 1 to 3 last week. Was fabulous.

There's just a sense of foreboding when a beloved programme has been re made by americans though. I wondernif they ruin it with a skinny beautiful and un funny cast?

boatyardblues · 19/11/2022 09:31

Is it also called Ghosts, or do I need to look for something else? I already think it’ll be a stretch because they have such limited (colonial) history to mine. I love Robin in the UK version.

PriamFarrl · 19/11/2022 09:33

I love ghosts but I think it works because the cast are all so close.

PuttingDownRoots · 19/11/2022 09:33

I've seen clips... the living couple are a bit annoying but the ghosts are alright.

Looking forward to watching when DH is home.

WarriorsComeOutToPlayaaay · 19/11/2022 10:52

@boatyardblues its called ‘Ghosts US’ so easy to find. I am going to watch a couple tonight, fingers crossed it has the warmth and charm of the original!

It's a lot more gory and more malicious haunting with nastier back stories for some of the ghosts. I watched it while over there earlier in the year. Its a different show to the original but not bad imo.

PriamFarrl · 19/11/2022 12:22

Why do they make American versions of shows? I’m sure Americans can cope with watching a British show. Look how much they love Downton.

PigLightingBastard · 19/11/2022 13:26

In ep 1 do they give away how the UK Captain died?

JemimaTab · 19/11/2022 13:32

Apparently it has been really successful in the US though, which is unusual for a UK remake. I might give it a go.
It’s bound to be different though, and I can’t imagine it would have quite the same charm as the original, as that seems to be pretty unique.

LIZS · 19/11/2022 13:36

BBC3 8:30pm tomorrow or iplayer

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 19/11/2022 13:39

Awful.
I thought it was just awful.
How on earth they can get a great story, great set up, fantastic characters so SO wrong I don’t know.
Had to turn it off.

Bathtubbathing · 19/11/2022 13:42

DD will be happy. She loves ghosts. I'll get her to binge this with me tomorrow 😁

Agreed: I accidentally started on episode 18 (so wooden), then tried the pilot (awful). It’ like Hershey chocolate: Ghosts in name only.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 21/11/2022 19:49

I wasn’t sure to start with but I’m actually quite enjoying it. It’s very different in feel to the original, and the jokes/points are quite laboured. But the ghosts are quite sweet really and I like their interactions. The central couple aren’t a patch on Alison and Mike though.

Bathtubbathing · 22/11/2022 07:14

Daughter didn't like it. I'm enjoying it.

It's like The Office US...treat it like a new programme, enjoy the characters and see what it has to offer.

Agree that the living characters could be stronger.

lucysnowe2 · 22/11/2022 16:27

I'm quite enjoying it. It suffers from the Robin equivalent (Thorfinn) being a bit rubbish and the main female character is weirdly perky and 2 dimensional. It's also a bit tedious to have so many extra ghosts - it makes the house ghosts less unique. But it's quite fun and v. watchable. It's actually making me appreciate BBC Ghosts more with its understated melancholy and sense of loss and decay.

reddingweddy · 22/11/2022 21:45

I gave it three episodes, just to be sure... and I was really disappointed. I felt it was too fast, too full of characters clamouring for screen time, and curiously charmless. A shame really because the basic premise is an absolute gift to the US writers and yet they managed to just lift the scripts almost line for line and lose everything that made the original so good.

HermioneWeasley · 22/11/2022 21:49

It’s really growing on me. The last few episodes I’ve seen have been non UK plot lines and they were really fun

WarriorsComeOutToPlayaaay · 23/11/2022 08:41

I’ve watched two episodes. I am not convinced but will try a couple more episodes.

We think it's totally shit
So of course we're watching it all. Grin

LIZS · 23/11/2022 08:53

Watched three episodes so far. Think it may develop as the plotlines became more different to original. I enjoyed the viking funeral for example.

It does lack a sense of camaraderie and flow which is natural to the uk group and the writing is not as tight. The cellar ghosts are different actors so you lose the continuity and it feels overly busy.

I agree, it is a very pale imitation and is lacking that 'something' that makes the U.K. version so great. Plus there is only one Pat, Kitty, Julian, Thomas, Robin, Fanny, The Captain, and of course Mary. Not forgetting Alison and Mike.
On another note has anyone else noticed Julian is doing the voiceover for the Tesco Christmas ad? Family, Family, Family!!!!

ZandathePanda · 23/11/2022 09:19

It lacks the pathos as well as the humour the original has. I think the US ghosts can physically touch each other. I think I remember correctly that the U.K. ones don’t so there’s the sadness of that that sets them apart from the living. In the US version they talked about ghost sex. Can’t remember that in the U.K. one either.

LIZS · 23/11/2022 09:33

@Shunkleisshiny Togetherrrrrr!

America12 · 23/11/2022 09:33

Awful.
