I love Ghosts and apparently the US version has had really good reviews. So pleased to see it on BBC iPlayer. Looking forward to giving this a go.

Absolute crap, total bilge. Not at all funny 👎🏻

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 23/11/2022 22:54

The husband is really annoying.

Pumpkin314 · 23/11/2022 23:00

Doesn't have the charm of the original, not a patch on it. They've somehow lost the silliness and also lost the really emotive aspects, and just made it a ghostly version of a million other American sitcoms.

But the premise is such a good one that I'm still watching anyway! To be fair if I had nothing to compare it to I'd probably love it.

Bullshot · 24/11/2022 09:36

Mmmmm - I started this and am not sure what I feel about it. Will give it another go and see if it grows on me.

I did love our UK Ghosts though so perhaps nothing will be as good as that? I'm still perfecting my 'Mary, 5 potatoes high' voice 😄

reddingweddy · 24/11/2022 11:13

Series 5 Uk version is coming!!

Tbh I found Mike really annoying.

It was OK. I liked the new characters but didn't like the machine gun speed dialogue or the exposition of the moral of the story in each episode. Not as good as the UK version.

I'm too scared to watch the US version of This Country when we get it. I don't think they could possibly get the nuance and understatement.

I'm sorry, what?

They're making a US This Country?

No no no no no no no.

Every level of wrong.

That premise cannot travel over the pond.

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 24/11/2022 20:20

We’ve only watched a few and it’s alright - not a patch on our Ghosts but it’s certainly watchable with the DC. You just have to try and treat it as a completely different show 😅

The main couple aren’t that good, agree the woman is far too perky in the traditional US sitcom way. But I really quite like the trader character, they’ve mashed Julian and Thomas together and it sort of works.

speedtalker · 24/11/2022 20:29

We love UK ghosts, so a fresh take was exciting as an alternative.
But the comedy timing is all gone. Massively rushed. And the captain alternative speaks in such a modern, irritating, way. Apart from the viking they all do- so much of the characters need to be built with the clash of period speech. There's nothing endearing about the 'arrow guy' and the former owner women looks so modern. They all look like they're messing around in period dress for the afternoon instead of inhabiting characters.
And the exposition...nothing left to implied silence. Amazing when there is a model of how to do it, and they change it all for the worse.

I was ill at the weekend and binged on the US version having seen all of the UK original.

I was a bit dubious, but actually ended up enjoying it. I like some of the different periods of history they refer to, and that there are more ghost characters outside of the core group.

I thought the hippy was a bit pointless but loved the Viking.

I think it has already been done but isn't available over here. I don't think there is the equivalent of a Cotswold village in the US so I dread to think what it will be like

The headless character in leathers hardly featured at all.

midsomermurderess · 24/11/2022 20:45

I've watched the first two episodes and it seems to have stayed pretty faithful to the British one so far. In my experience, US remakes of British shows tend to be gentler, eg The Office, quite a different feel to the British show.

RunPmt · 24/11/2022 20:56

After the first few episodes I really enjoyed it. I love that more ghosts from outside are featured, and that "Alison" interacts with them instead of trying to ignore them. A bit too many mentions of sex for my liking (prude!) not as charming as the original but definitely enjoyable.

I particularly like the soldier who is jealous of Hamilton and the teenage ghost in the attic was hilarious. Very well done. Also the husband isn't as annoying as Mike so that in itself is a bonus.

ZandathePanda · 24/11/2022 21:01

Can anyone confirm my recollection that the U.K. ghosts can’t touch each other but the US ones do?

BillStickersIsInnocent · 24/11/2022 21:06

@ZandathePanda I think they can - in the wedding episode there was a fist fight between Thomas and Pat I think.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 24/11/2022 21:07

Also playing volleyball with Humphrey’s head

BillStickersIsInnocent · 24/11/2022 21:07

And Fanny making out with Humphrey’s body

IsThePopeCatholic · 24/11/2022 21:17

I love Ghosts. I watched the first episode of the US version and thought it was awful. Brash, unsubtle, and boring. I won’t be watching any more.

ZandathePanda · 24/11/2022 21:20

Damnations, you’re all right. I don’t think they have much contact though. I think there’s lots more in the US version then they talk about ghost sex. Which changes the dynamics of ghost ‘life’ I think to something less ‘other’ and more normal living human iyswim.

IsadoraQuagmire · 24/11/2022 21:38

I love it, it's very funny and I like all the characters. I've seen all of the UK original and that didn't make me laugh once.

AmyandPhilipfan · 24/11/2022 22:04

I've watched a few episodes over the last couple of nights. Like someone else said, if I didn't have the original to compare it to I'd probably really love it, but having seen the original it doesn't come close. Particularly the alive couple. Mike is a bit dim but you can't help liking him whereas this guy just comes across as obnoxious a lot of the time. And Alison and Mike were both so excited to be gifted a house whereas this jerk didn't want it and then when she decided he was right and they shouldn't keep it he totally changed his mind and got them in massive debt.

I do like Thorfinn. And don't mind Isaac. The hippy seems pointless, the Native American seems too modern and Alberta seems quite a stereotype of a loud, black American woman. And I love Pat and so far Pete is not a patch on him.

Dahlia444 · 24/11/2022 22:43

I've just watched the first two and quite enjoyed it. Will be watching more. I did laugh. I miss Pat! And Sam isn't a patch on Alison. I prefer the husband to Mike though.
