Louis Theroux Interviews

Have watched both episodes of the new series with mixed feelings.

Louis' interview style seems to be different; much more relaxed, less probing and some of the questions are a bit meh.

I gave up on the Stormzy episode. It could have been so much more given the political and social weight he carries.

However, I loved last nights episode with Dame Judy Dench. She was a delight and such a self deprecating person.

Anyone else watched it?

Did anyone watch the Yungblud one yet?

PrincessJanet · 09/11/2022 22:18

Yes. I’d never heard of him. Not sure what to make of it tbh.

popsoda · 09/11/2022 22:26

I did. I felt a bit worried for him taking on other peoples issues whilst dealing with his own along with heavy schedule touring

popsoda · 10/11/2022 20:19

Think I kill threads!

Snozzlemaid · 10/11/2022 20:30

It did all seem very intense for him, like you say taking on his fans issues when he has things himself to deal with.
Was surprised his family agreed to appear after he spoke of his abusive childhood.

covetingthepreciousthings · 10/11/2022 21:01

Yungbluds really grown on me over the last year or two, you can tell how much he loves what he does especially performing live. His Glastonbury performance earlier this year was incredible.

I do worry about him though as he's obviously found quite a strong following, but it's a massive thing to take on and have all those dark traumatic letters and DMs. I hope he gets some support too for dealing with it all. He can't be there for everyone at all times.

He seems to have a lot of time for his fans and genuinely seems happy to take pictures and chat to them, I think some of the bigger celebs could learn a thing or two from him about that.

Also surprised his parents agreed to have that segment shown, but then again they seem to be a supportive family now who have overcome issues.

popsoda · 10/11/2022 21:14

He seems close to his family , Loved when he stopped to get milk on his way home because his mum asked him to!

Fritilleries · 11/11/2022 12:20

I'm just constantly cringing.... he's so full on. Maybe I am just old now.

PrincessJanet · 11/11/2022 12:35

I mean, I admired his energy (and suspected ADHD from the off. I guess he's "authentic" but only to the extent that many of the insta generation can be?

Regarding the family footage, I wonder if memories vary or if the family arguments affected him more than anyone realised at the time. It did seem a very loving family dynamic and he had obviously benefited from his father's commercial success.

Judi Dench is an old woman. She's already outlived so many people! There are people all around her who are making it possible for her to carry on working despite her sight problems.

How many people are deprived of the chance of working if they want to carry on at 20, 30, 40 years younger than her? And how many of them could make the hundreds of thousands she would have got from her recent Money Supermarket TV adverts?

Ageist shite

DeeofDenmark · 11/11/2022 12:50

@youlightupmyday I’m not sure what you’re point is?

Ageist shite

"Ageist shite" - don't be daft. I was responding to a pp who said "she seems like an old woman and it's sad". There's no dressing up the facts is there? She is old. But why be sad about it - Dame Judy is very lucky indeed.

hugznotdrugz · 11/11/2022 19:26

I absolutely loved the yungblud one!

the80sweregreat · 11/11/2022 20:58

I also adore yungblud ! He reminds me of a young gary Newman! Fascinating character

IfOnlyOCould · 11/11/2022 21:47

I've gone right off LT ever since listening to him interview Frankie Boyle on radio. LT was such a suck-up it was embarrassing. He barely mentioned FBs more controversial comments. The 'joke' about Katie Prices disabled son was alluded to but brushed away with barely a comment. I listened to the interview to see what FB was going to say about the fact he has never apologised for saying disgusting joke about a disabled child.

johnworf · 11/11/2022 23:05

Just watched Yungblud. Absolute darling!

I did not warm to youngblud at all and I felt that LT had reservations about him as well.

I didn’t find his performance persona authentic at all. He has lifted his mannerisms and look from people like Sid Vicious, Gary Newman and Joe Strummer. He is performing transgression but not actually doing anything transgressive. I find him mild and at the same time cynical and inauthentic.

I was also appalled by the way he exploited the difficulties of his basically loving and supportive family in order to have a story to sell his audience about suffering. I felt incredibly embarrassed for his parents and siblings.

I thought the same. I’m old so he’s not really for me, but I got a sense of incongruence and cynicism from him as well. Precocious stage school kid repackaging Emo for the gen Z kids.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 13/11/2022 22:02

Just watching this now. I think I would have really liked him when I was 19. At 39, I’m finding him a bit annoying.

Exactly! I I really think LT thought that too.

@Howeverdoyouneedme obviously his target audience is not people my age but it’s a shame that young people are being sold something second hand and unoriginal.

determinedtomakethiswork · 13/11/2022 22:14

@CantSleepCountingSheep why on earth would you think I'm Ruby Wax? I just find Stephen Bartlett to be a much better interviewer.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 13/11/2022 22:20

The scene with his family made me cringe.

allthecrooksandnannies · 13/11/2022 22:27

He seemed uncomfortable about things like YB having people up on stage to announce their sexuality then YB leaving them to deal with the fallout.

Totally agree. Though suspect I would have liked him 30 years ago.

Byfleet · 13/11/2022 22:33

@Youkilledmyfatherpreparetodie but 30 years ago that look was genuinely new and surprising. Now it’s a pastiche. That kind of inauthenticity is very studied and deliberate. Not that different from an X factor contestant. I wouldn’t have liked that kind of performer 30 years ago at all.
