Louis Theroux Interviews

Have watched both episodes of the new series with mixed feelings.

Louis' interview style seems to be different; much more relaxed, less probing and some of the questions are a bit meh.

I gave up on the Stormzy episode. It could have been so much more given the political and social weight he carries.

However, I loved last nights episode with Dame Judy Dench. She was a delight and such a self deprecating person.

Anyone else watched it?

It's a shame YB is a fully paid up pronoun nutter

MichaelAndEagle · 15/11/2022 09:58

I really did not know what to make of YB.
His problems did feel a bit made up tbh but then maybe I'm just cynical and old, I definitely am cynical and old!

Mrsjayy · 15/11/2022 10:04

Louis theroux is more of a "chatter" on this than probing interviewer I downloaded them and really enjoyed them I wish you had stuck with Stormzy Op it was really interesting. I only have yungblood to watch I don't really know who he is though 🤔

Mrsjayy · 15/11/2022 10:05

And of course Judi Dench was a delight.

MichaelAndEagle · 15/11/2022 11:53

I think the series is a bit more like the grounded podcast he did during one of the lockdowns.

purpleme12 · 15/11/2022 19:28

I'd never heard of Youngblud but I've watched that episode now and it was an interesting watch.
This one felt more like his documentaries

Howeverdoyouneedme · 15/11/2022 21:34

Not sure why Louis chose Bear Grylls.

IamSamantha · 15/11/2022 21:43

I'm not warming to Bear Grylls. He feels a bit fake.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 15/11/2022 21:48

I didn’t warm to him at all.

Mrsjayy · 15/11/2022 22:06

I think he's ridiculous I didn't download his episode.

purpleme12 · 15/11/2022 23:20

Ah I thought it was enjoyable.
Honestly I wasn't going to watch any, with it but being his normal format, but actually I've enjoyed them all so far.
But I do love Louis

purpleme12 · 15/11/2022 23:21

Funny when he talked about his mistakes, that bit where he was walking across a volcano and was saying you have to be careful then it showed the tik tok video with the road in the background

VanillaParkersBowl · 16/11/2022 09:28

I don't think Yungblud is taking on his fans' issues at all. He gets them to say whatever's bothering them and says "Just be yourself" and walks off, probably to think about himself.

I have never watched any of Bear Grylls before but watched last night to see what I could learn. Nothing, I got nothing from that.

Nuggetss · 16/11/2022 09:32

Yungblud was so irritating. I hated the visit with his family when Louis were asking the family if they were abusive. It felt really weird , YB obviously has some relationship with his family as why would he visit them. Maybe they should sort out their issues in private.

Mischance · 16/11/2022 09:46

I really dislike this man, and more so after reading his autobiography.

I hate his faux innocent attitude: "Who? Me? Did I ask a cheeky question?" Even his photo in the Radio Times has a contrived wide-eyed look.

This is the man who claims he was taken in by Saville - but who knew in his gut what he was but chose to ignore that for the sake of his programme/income. Even gave Saville hospitality in his home.

Theroux is shallow and self-serving and I have no time for him.

PrincessJanet · 16/11/2022 17:13

Bear Grylls was nice enough. Seemed a typical nice, privileged, upper class man. Not a riveting 45 minutes.

GardenNice · 16/11/2022 22:19

I thought the bit where Bear Grylls talked about the anxiety he felt before going on stage at the festival was interesting, not what I was expecting.
This might be related to the trauma he experienced when his parents sent him to boarding school at 7 where he experienced bullying and he would avert his eyes and try to disappear when in the presence of bullies for fear they'd pick on him.

I did not warm to youngblud at all and I felt that LT had reservations about him as well.

I didn’t find his performance persona authentic at all. He has lifted his mannerisms and look from people like Sid Vicious, Gary Newman and Joe Strummer. He is performing transgression but not actually doing anything transgressive. I find him mild and at the same time cynical and inauthentic.

I was also appalled by the way he exploited the difficulties of his basically loving and supportive family in order to have a story to sell his audience about suffering. I felt incredibly embarrassed for his parents and siblings.

God,me too,I thought he was dreadful, couldn't be faker if he tried.

Really enjoyed Judi telling him off 🤣

Carriemac · 17/11/2022 20:52

I'm enjoying them, he mildly gets his point across, its clear he though youngblud was a bit fake yet he wasn't mean to him. Judi was a delight and i really warmed to her.

Mrsjayy · 17/11/2022 20:56

I watched yungblood today it all seemed a bit put on agnst ! I think one of my dds watched his Disney programme I recognised his face

Bear Grylls was nice enough. Seemed a typical nice, privileged, upper class man. Not a riveting 45 minutes.

Quite dull and turned off when they mentioned he'd gone to eton. Nah, not interested in two massively privileged privately educated blokes having a chat thanks.

tropicbloom · 17/11/2022 22:43

Doing the school run in your pyjamas is uncouth, but going on a first date with bear grylls in them is just charming and kooky.

Byfleet · 18/11/2022 07:07

@tropicbloom agree. That reminds me of a great thread on MN which listed all the behaviours that were charming in the upper classes but beyond the pale in working classes. Eg. Owning firearms, intermarrying and daytime drinking.

I haven’t watched much Bear Grylls but surely what he does is like a posh version of Jackass but now with added life philosophy to make it seem more legitimate.

Byfleet · 18/11/2022 07:20

Bear Grylls is basically a bit odd, in the same way that Jackass performers are. But he’s posh, so it’s fine, even admirable.

What is more annoying is that LT does not really pick up on or probe his oddness, which he would do with interviewees who were not British or not classy. LT used to specialise in interviewing oddballs and eccentrics in a knowing way so that the viewer was in on the joke. He doesn’t even notice Bear Grylls’ oddness because in the world of upper class British men he’s not that unusual and anyway as another upper class British male he is respected and understood.

It makes for a very dull interview with so many unanswered questions. What is life really like for his wife? What if one of his sons really enjoyed sitting at home reading all day? What will Bear Grylls do when he is older and less strong? What is Bear Grylls afraid of?

coffeeheart · 18/11/2022 07:34

I've always enjoyed LT's documentaries as his unique selling point has mostly been talking to weird and wonderful people. Found the 'most hated family' episodes really gripping, giving a proper look inside the minds/motives of such a dysfunctional family. He always had a great way of provoking people without appearing to.

Celeb interviews are a bit boring in comparison
