MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #35): Autumn - season of mists, mellow fruitfulness and Woolly Wookiee oppa
boatyardblues · 27/08/2022 07:55
A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.
The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.
Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.
We sometimes resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or favourite actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.
If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Grab a limb and get cosy chingus. I'm taking a cheek...
boatyardblues · 27/08/2022 12:33
Thanks Pol. In 6 months none of us would have remembered what this reference was about. I want to give future digital communities researchers a chance of understanding our crazy. That picture still brings me out in a sweat, and not the good kind.
Cobol · 27/08/2022 16:34
Poor JCW 😥. He's only an actor after all, however handsome. Even Lee Jong-Suk with his catwalk experience would struggle to pull that kind of look off and I've seen him manage to look elegant in some pretty bizarre outfits. Korean winters are pretty cold, though. Maybe it's a more appealing look when it's several degrees below freezing .... but probably not.
Rowdythree · 27/08/2022 18:25
He does look very cosy, I expect in a few months time when it's freezing we'll all be wishing we had a knitted co-ord to keep us warm! I'll take an arm I can cuddle on a chilly evening 💪

Yee haa! New thread! I've got a hot flush just looking at that arran wool getup, and not in a good way.

Newcomer here but just finished alchemy and feeling desolate with a lack of kdrama fantasy. Anything I could try?
Done squid game
The one where you get dragged to hell, can't remember name
Alice in borderland (I know not k)
Tried a few others like uncanny counter and Vincenzo but found them a bit too cheesy humour.
And recs greatly received!
Don't have viki and can't get goblin
Cobol · 29/08/2022 18:01
I'm a big fan all shows supernatural and have to admit you might struggle to top what you've already watched as Sweet Home, Hellbound and Alice in Borderland would be my top tips for best straight fantasy/horror.
Kingdom is good and definitely not cheesy and Hotel Del Luna from the same writers as AOS is also a really good supernatural one.
Rowdythree · 29/08/2022 19:30
Hi Ridingthegravytrain, I second Cobol's suggestions and add Kingdom: Ashin of the North which is a one off prequel to Kingdom, and W: Two worlds
I'm all caught up with Daily Webtoon and I enjoyed this week's episodes more, I felt the storyline has picked up, and there may be a glimmer of a romance appearing. I also have a huge crush on Choi Daniel in this! 😍 He's going on the age appropriate Oppa list!
boatyardblues · 29/08/2022 19:31
Welcome @Ridingthegravytrain !! Lovely to have you aboard.
Fantasy & Netflix, I’d go with Black and Korean Odyssey.
boatyardblues · 29/08/2022 19:32
Oh yes, good call on W: Two Worlds.
Cobol · 29/08/2022 19:50
I enjoyed W: Two Worlds Apart too but wasn't sure if it would pass the "not too cheesy" test. In fact I think it might be the show Lee Jong-Suk managed to impress me with his ability to look cool in completely bonkers outfits. I've got a vague memory of a black top with one white sleeve that was rather jarring, for a start, but I could be wrong. I might have to go check now, or it's going to bug me.
MigsandTiggs · 29/08/2022 19:51
Welcome@Ridingthegravytrain I second Black and add Tomorrow on Netflix. The gang on this thread will soon have you trying other genres😁And the next thing you know, you'll be down the rabbit hole, following good looking Koreans on insta...
Rowdythree · 29/08/2022 19:58
cobol I felt the same about Lee Jong Suk, I try to avoid him as much as possible but I somehow stumbled upon W and really enjoyed it. It may well be too cheesy, it's been a while since I watched it.
Fantasy is not my favourite genre, I must admit. I do enjoy the horror ones more than the supernatural though. Maybe I'll pick up some recommendations too, I haven't watched a lot of the ones mentioned so far.
Good luck @Ridingthegravytrain and come back and tell us which ones you've watched!
Ridingthegravytrain · 29/08/2022 20:07
Thank you for all the recommendations. I till give them a try. I watch with my husband and he has a lot lower tolerance to the cheese factor than I do so maybe I'll have to watch some without him. Though we do like the humour they instill into things like AOS.
I have actually starred welcome to wedding hell as I think lee Jin wook is hot! Also we have started money heist and seen all of us are dead.
We were joking about how come we weren't fluent already the amount we have seen (watch with subs) but so far only seem to have grasped the word for father 😂
JinBhoot · 29/08/2022 21:28
Thanks for the new thread @boatyardblues
@Ridingthegravytrain welcome welcome.
The amount of Kdrama I have watched, my family expects me to be fluent (I am not a language person so really suck at learning new language) however I can now tell apart, Chinese, Japanese & Korean just be listening.
Selling Your Haunted House was surprisingly good. But I enjoyed W-two worlds apart more as story had twists & turns.
AesopsMables · 29/08/2022 22:06
Thanks for the new thread Boaty
FedUpWithBriiiiick · 29/08/2022 22:39
Stumbled upon a little gem while poking round the cupboards at Olga's house: This Guy Is The Biggest Mistake In My Life (Kono Otoko wa Jinsei Saidai no Ayamachidesu)
Not finished it yet so cannot confirm a 🐝 friendly ending, but so far a quirky little romcom with standard levels of Japanese insanity.
FedUpWithBriiiiick · 29/08/2022 22:40
polkettle · 30/08/2022 06:18
I'm going to be the new genre tempter @Ridingthegravytrain and say try Misaeng with your DH. Completely unlike any other telly, it makes office politics edge of your seat gripping -" NO! NOT A CHANGE IN ORDER OF THE POWER POINT SLIDES YOU CRAZY FOOLS!" Not something any other series will make you shout at the telly but...
It's cheese free and proper good.
Fantasy and horror not my thing though generally. Recommend Happiness but still not on UK Netflix. It will get here eventually though I think.
