MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #35): Autumn - season of mists, mellow fruitfulness and Woolly Wookiee oppa

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We sometimes resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or favourite actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Two episodes in on hotel del Luna and enjoying it so far. Spent a while last night adding everything to my watchlist. Thanks 👍

Me too Bea 🧀
Sweat and Soap Manga is a revelation as a form of soothing escapist media where literally Nothing Bad Ever Happens. I love it and I need more. I think this is the joy of fanfic too.

Here you all are, thanks for the new thread Boaty

Can anyone tell me where I can watch Hello Monster? Doesn't appear to be on Viki and I fancy watching it.

I've fallen down a ✨spicy✨ Jdrama hole.

I'll be fine for a while down here. Someone rescue me in <checks watch> 3-4 hours.

polkettle · 30/08/2022 14:51

Well you need to tell us where you are FedUp in case we want to test our own spice tolerance. How many chilli peppers are we talking?

Warning: expletive laden rant incoming

WHY ARE JAPANESE FLs SEEMINGLY INCAPABLE OF TELLING SLEAZY MEN TO FUCK OFF?

FUCKING SPIT IT OUT, FOR GOD'S SAKE!

boatyardblues · 30/08/2022 18:43

So I learned today the Viking k rune in the runic alphabet was used for both /k/ and /g/ which is the same as ㄱ in Korean. This both pleased me and intrigued me.

Can anyone think of a historical drama that is not based around the Palaces and the lives of the Yangban?

boatyardblues · 30/08/2022 21:03

Depends how far back you go, Rowdy. Chicago Typewriter is a period drama, but more recent times. Mr Sunshine, although that transition from nobles with slaves to other interests.

I've Just finished Imitation on Viki and got a bit leaky eyed at the end but it is 🐝friendly. It's all about idol training and has the ML from Let Me Be Your Knight which I haven't seen but might watch now.

Rowdythree · 30/08/2022 21:07

Yeah, I don't know. We've seen both of the two you mentioned , DH just said he's fed up of seeing whispy beards and palace robes (I don't mind though, I'm currently watching Rookie Historian). He wants to see the lives of ordinary people, which would be very interesting, but I can't think of any.

bettys · 30/08/2022 21:09

Rowdy the synopsis of the new Kim Min Jae drama Poong, The Joseon Psychiatrist sounds like it starts in the palace & then moves to the country (haven't seen it myself). I'm imagining a Joseon version of Doc Martin with dimples & psychiatry

Pachinko ?

boatyardblues · 30/08/2022 21:10

Bossam was more peasant-focussed but I never finished it and had the sense both of the leads were nobles LARPing as peasants. One was deffo larping with good reason, but the other had uncertain roots. I’m sure it was all wrapped up in the episodes I haven’t watched.

OP posts:
Rowdythree · 30/08/2022 21:17

I've seen Bossam too 🤦‍♀️and yes you're right they were both Nobles!

Pachinko is a good call Bettys, we don't have Apple TV but I'm sure we can get hold of it somewhere.

I think there's a gap in the drama market!

bettys · 30/08/2022 21:19

Olga has Pachinko...which reminds me I need to check out FedUps latest find......

It would be more Baldric than Boudicca, though. Lives were likely grimy, grim and short. Tough sell in a market used to colourful silk hanboks, feisty maids and flower boys. 🤷‍♀️

Don't bother with that one, chum. It got super boring mid season, and the FL is absolutely atrocious 🤣
