Is it me or is it just getting daft now?

JellyBellyNelly · 22/06/2022 06:42

It is a bit daft now in places but I’m enjoying the history of it.

R00tat00tt00t · 22/06/2022 06:43

Still enjoying this and can't get over the cast, every episode there are more familiar faces and all really strong actors, never seen so many in one show.
I think I am keeping up with the plot but hoping that we start to tie some connections up next episode otherwise it will all be too rushed in the last episode or worse, unresolved.
There's obviously something off with St Clair's wife and we've met "Keats" in the nursing home but who were the other 3 poets/spycops? What was so bad that Keats had to take his own life once discovered.
I think there's some history between Lesley Manvillle's character and St Clair but what?
Can't quite work out what was going on with Andy Fisher last night. He's obviously not well and son mentioned PTSD but he seemed to be having some kind of acute mental breakdown/crisis in the woods and seemed to be switching between states/personalities in some ways. Is he schizophrenic or is that a normal reaction to the trauma of killing your DIL? Great acting whatever it is.
Loads of other questions but will come back later.

I agree. It’s great. And I wonder if it’s because of their politics that they wanted to be in the show - Mark Addy was a face in the crowd of pickets in episode 3 and he has no shortage of work so couldn’t have been doing it for the money.

Penguinsaregreat · 22/06/2022 06:48

I think Helen must be the spy, that’s why her file is restricted.
What is Scott going to do with Andy?
What really happened on the night of the fire?
And why is Scott doing this? Surely he isn’t affected by the spy cop he is only 23.

Sharrowgirl · 22/06/2022 06:48

The characters are confusing. So many middle-aged white men.

Miners:
Gary Jackson - killed in the street by an arrow

Fred - breathing trouble, son on the run. His wife and Gary’s wife are sisters.

Dean someone - threw the snooker ball at Gary in the bar

Beardy one - given a leaflet in the very first scene and later got into a fight with the Met copper. We know from credits that this is St Claire’s brother but I don’t think this has been made clear in the show yet.

Sparrow father/husband - was he a miner? From the criminal family

Coppers:
St Clair - the main one
Beardy one from the met
Jacob Harris - shot at on the golf course and having an affair

Younger men:
Scott - son of Fred, crossbow killer, on the run
Younger Sparrow - taxi driver and criminal. Trained Scott how to shoot.
Even younger Sparrow - dating granddaughter of dead miner

It is getting daft now. I think these shows are too long. They have to make a story stretch for six hours when it could be told better in three.

Lottapianos · 22/06/2022 06:54

'Don Gilet is older (55) than he looks'

My gosh, he looks at least 10 years younger than that. Agree he looks way too young for Jenny

Rosehugger · 22/06/2022 07:04

I thought the one who shot himself was "Robbie Platt" and there were five spy cops - all named after romantic poets, which was his idea. He texted five people on his phone. Four went home in 1984 but "Keats" stayed, who is Helen St Clair.

Rosehugger · 22/06/2022 07:09

Where was Lindsey Duncan in episode 4? I kept dozing off as I was watchng it late but wound back through the episode to watch any bits I'd missed and couldn't find her.

Ha, you missed the best bit. About half way through she comes for a meeting at Newstead Abbey and gives a really powerful speech. The ancestral home of BYRON (so many poets eh?)

JellyBellyNelly · 22/06/2022 07:33

blimey. Can you explain this in simpler terms for me to understand pls. Who’s Beardy? And who’s St Clair’s brother?

thank you

LadyEloise1 · 22/06/2022 07:40

Will Kevin the Met cop get back with Jenny the headteacher now that her husband is having an affair- what's sauce for the goose.........

I think Ian St Clair and Julie had a thing going years back. Was she the red haired girl at the picketing/demonstrations ?
Definitely something between them as they sat having tea.

Is Helen St Clair spy Dorothy Wordsworth ?

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/06/2022 08:09

ButtonSister · 21/06/2022 22:22

Is Helen St Clair Dorothy Wordsworth?
And in an area of countryside so big that 100's of police fail to find either the archer or the train driver what a coincidence those 2 and 2 campers all end up in the same spot.

I find it difficult to imagine how he could ride about on his bike with a crossbow on his back and not be noticed. It's countryside but it's not remote.

The speech Lindsey Duncan gave was brilliant I thought.
yy though trouble with figuring out who is who & how they fit into the story.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/06/2022 08:19

I hate it went people put hot mugs onto a surface without a coaster
@the80sweregreat it was even worse when they did it on the antique table at Newstead Abbey. I actually shouted out 'Use a coaster!'.

LadyEloise1 · 22/06/2022 08:19

Well as another poster wrote - "It's all gone a bit daft"

@JellyBellyNelly Ian St Clair's brother is, I think, the man who was facially scarred during the protests.

Rosehugger · 22/06/2022 08:26

Beardy St Clair brother (Martin St Clair - check the IMDB cast list) is Mark Frost aka Ray Crosby in Coronation St.

Rosehugger · 22/06/2022 08:28

Thanks @PuppyMonkey

Lottapianos · 22/06/2022 08:28

'The speech Lindsey Duncan gave was brilliant I thought.'

Yes, and brilliantly performed

DuncinToffee · 22/06/2022 08:38

Agree about the bit daft.

The cruise is clearly not a cruise, maybe they are in jail, rehab or something?

Also Jenny must have been very young during the strike, maybe it was an underage relationship?

I don't think Helen is Keats, I like the idea of Daphne Sparrow.

The arrrow shootings are confusing me, could there be another archer who shot Gary?

Sharrowgirl · 22/06/2022 08:40

JellyBellyNelly · 22/06/2022 07:33

So there’s a chap with a scarred face and a gray beard. He answered the door to Sarah, the Tory councillor (now dead) who was delivering leaflets in the opening scene. He was in the bar when the Kevin, the Met copper came in for a drink and said don’t I know you? I never forget a face. He was then scene having a fight with him outside the bar and being held back by uniformed police. He shouted ‘once a turncoat always a turncoat’ at St Clair.

He is apparently St Clair’s estranged brother, Martin, though I only know this from reading The Guardian’s episode recap. It’s not obvious from what’s happened in the show so far. A brother was only mentioned in passing.

Halsall · 22/06/2022 08:52

I think the red-head in the flashback of the protests was indeed Julie.

However, I agree with Rosehugger, I don’t think 'Robbie Platt' (the man in the nursing home) was Keats, was he? He said Keats was the renegade who went rogue, the implication being that it was one of the others. It looks as though that was Helen St Clair, but they may be toying with us.

If there was a crazed crossbow/bow & arrow shooter roaming an area of countryside, murdering at least one person, injuring another and shooting indiscriminately, would police really let them run free for days, or would they be bringing out a helicopter with some sort of thermal imaging technology as a matter of some urgency? They seem to have the funds for a battalion of officers from the Met so there appears to be money available. I dunno, it may not be technically possible, but it feels as though they’re not making much progress here…

the80sweregreat · 22/06/2022 09:03

I did see a helicopter at one stage , but it's obviously not doing a very good job!
Missed the missing coaster on the table at the stately home ! Obviously empty cold mugs ( I hope)

the80sweregreat · 22/06/2022 09:05

I do love Robert Glenister's no nonsense character. How to out an affair in a few awkward questions ! Jenny took it quite well considering
