I must be very slow as I dont know who the family were in the car accident, almost lost their son the night Jack dies?

We hadn't seen them before, they had no other connection to the characters beyond being there that night, so we aren't supposed to know who they are. Jack told the dad the making lemonade from lemons thing and it became a family motto/saying, and then it was used when the grown up boy's research wasn't going well and so he moved the Alzheimer's research and made a breakthrough.
As a PP said, I think it was about the effects you can have on other people's lives even through small interactions.

Beth's chat with Rebecca made me cry

My mum died v suddenly many years ago (heart attack) and none of us got to say goodbye so these type of staged scenes where everyone gets to say their piece always make me well up!

SickAndTiredAgain

Thanks for the explanation. I have to say I loved this series, just found some segments confusing.

I was with my mum @OrangeBall and it was nothing like this.

OrangeBall · 21/05/2022 13:15

I can imagine @Blossomtoes. Im sure it's quite rare that everyone manages to gather round and everyone gets to say something in a calm and measured way and at home too and not the hospital!

Btw I didn't think that Miguel not being there was a glaring omission - probably more that she hadn't seen Jack for a longer time than she hadn't seen Miguel if that makes sense.

RoyKentsChestHair · 21/05/2022 17:45

I was fully expecting Jack to be holding baby Kyle or maybe there would be a grown up version of Kyle, but then I guess it wasn’t an afterlife as such, it was memories, so sadly Rebecca didn’t have any memories of a life with Kyle. I’m glad she ended up with Jack and I’m a big Miguel fan, (especially after that TikTok dance!). I love the explanation that he didn’t figure as heavily because she was seeing life through younger Rebecca’s eyes and Miguel just wasn’t a big part of it then, hence the confused look. A part of her clearly knew that he loved her for her to remember him saying that to her, but the bigger part of her knew that belonged with Jack. Can’t wait for the last one 😭

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 21/05/2022 17:50

@OrangeBall miguel was represented as the early Miguel. The one Rebecca knew from her early days with jack.
with Alzheimer’s it’s the oldest memories that stick, hence seeing Miguel as the younger version not as her husband. She saw Randall’s children as the younger versions of themselves too. The same with the younger grandchildren. Rebecca probably would have forgotten who they are as recent memories are gone in a flash.

Netaporter · 21/05/2022 19:16

@Blossomtoes I was with my Dad at the end and I agree. The worst part of a film/TV ‘sanitised’ death is the physical brutality of a person passing away. Hugs to you @OrangeBall but even when you do manage to ‘make it’ it leaves a mark on you in a different way.

MalFunkshun · 22/05/2022 01:06

I thought the people in the train (and the versions of them) were very much tied to the version of Rebecca that was moving through it - ie representative of the time / memories that she still held most lucidly in her mind with Alzheimer’s. In that timeframe, Miguel was a good friend, but not husband / lover. When she was being moved away from Miguel, she paused and frowned as if she was trying to remember; I think that was present day Rebecca who knew there was a deeper connection there, but couldn’t quite grasp what it was.

Her relationship with Jack is ‘unfinished business’ - he was always going to be at the end of her train because she needs to close that loop.

As an aside, Beth got me good! Loved her releasing Rebecca, as it were, from the responsibility of caring for Randall so she was free to move on. Just such a brilliant episode.

@Alphabet1spaghetti2 that makes perfect sense

Yes I really like that explanation

AnImaginaryCat · 22/05/2022 10:19

I thought it was well done. Had the potential to be awful. I think if you read about it - petson walking through a train to their afterlife- it would sound rubbish!!

Though I'd have liked to see newborn Kyle in bed with them. There were so many props and nods to things that had happened I thought that ending up with "two of us and one baby" might have been good - thw afterlife "big three" 😄

I didn't cry. Heart of stone!!

unhappychaos · 22/05/2022 16:32

Is the last one on Tuesday then?

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/05/2022 16:40

Last one forever on Thursday

Ah ok, I thought it was Tuesday for some reason this time. Not sure where I read it!

EasterIssland · 23/05/2022 07:26

Tuesday in USA
Thursday in uk

Nospringchickendipper · 23/05/2022 07:38

I was upset too that it was Jack and not Miguel.
Beautiful episode

Sooverthemill · 23/05/2022 10:01

Omg that was heart wrenching. So beautifully done. Was so happy to see Malik. The Kate storyline reminded me of my own mum who clung on until my sister rushed over from the USA. Cried buckets. This next episode may well break me

Juniper68 · 23/05/2022 10:46

Is it on prime too? My Disney subscription runs out soon.

Yes it is

I know this is bad form, but I purposely haven't read any posts since e17 came out (have read up to a point after e16 tho) because I've not watched it yet and want no spoilers (obviously the blurb says they gather around Rebecca's bedside,, but apart from that...) But I am trying to decide whether to (or if I can!) wait for e18 and then watch the last two together. Is there anyone else who is doing that?

Mistressofnone · 23/05/2022 22:08

Just watched ep17 and loved it. It didn't break me as much as the early episode when William dies, but it was very thought-provoking.
Agree maybe too much time given to Marcus & fam so close to the end.

Also understand from the comments here why Miguel didn't feature more - but thought they made him seem a bit sleazy!

A nod to Kyle would have been good, but I imagine trying to handle a storyline involving the ghost of a stillborn baby, could go horribly wrong.

MinglingFlamingo · 23/05/2022 22:58

Just watched the train

This late in the game Marcus and his family brought nothing to the story. Apart from a massive shoehorn. Season 4 or 5 when we were still figuring out Jacks death fine not now. I thought that Marcus would be donated Jacks organs and Deja would have his baby and they met in the hospital. At the very least

So Malik is the dad to Deja's Baby

I'd forgotten how much I love William.

I really hope the last episode isn't going to be a damp squid of a funeral and stuff. I felt like that episode was the finale.

princesssparklepants · 24/05/2022 10:05

Glad i found this thread as I had no idea there was one more episode!
Thought last weeks was it!
Thankfully DH is out Friday night so I'll have something to watch in peace!
