Real life story

John a former teacher and prison officer fakes his own death in 2002 via a canoe - with the help of Ann his wife to claim Life insurance and avoid bankruptcy

It is based on an unpublished manuscript by reporter David , he was the first one to find and interview ann after a boot of the couple was seen 5yrs later in 2007

Ann knew but not the sons who believes their dad was dead

I just can't understand why Anne didn't tell their sons. Is it possible that she actually did tell them, but when it all came out they wanted to protect the sons, so claimed that they didn't know? Otherwise, it's completely mad that she didn't tell them. I think she's less of a victim than she lets on. She played a very active role in the whole thing and then tried to move to Panama.

The fact that he decided to return to the UK and pretend he had amnesia was beyond insane (as if the whole plan wasn't insane enough to start with).

I've read different accounts of what happened after he went ' missing ' , they didn't mention the camping out or him using the red phone box but online they said Ann picked him up from a pier somewhere straight away ? The bbc four drama also had him talking to a camp site owner about the camping fees, but on ITV they didn't show this it was just a clearing in the woods ?
I think a few things are hazy or been wrote in even maybe even made up ?

Things are always changed in dramas, sometimes for good reason.

The film 'Pride' is about real events but the character 'Bromley' is complete fiction, his role is to bring the viewer into the story and ask the questions we would ask

Often characters are invented or are an amalgamation of two or more people.

This version is based on the book written by the journalist who is featured in the programme, which is based on what Anne told him in Panama.

Ann has to have been a very good actor and very good at thinking on her feet in answering awkward questions, particularly given the length of time she kept this going. I could sort of understand if she did none of it particularly willingly but was ground down by years of living with a fantasist husband who was driving them into financial ruin, and subsequently by fear of being found out and convicted - or possibly acted out of love for him. But it really is incredibly difficult to reconcile all that with sustained lying to her sons when she knew how much distress it was causing them.

Even after being caught and charged, the woman lied again and again in her trial. She’s no victim.

Her lying was bad :(
It was a story that they twisted so much even they didn't know the actual truth by the end of it I bet !

Monica Dolan played Rosemary west in appropriate adult, she is a great actress
I remember when they found out what he did . It was a huge story.

That's really interesting, I am watching the series now and it keeps making me think of the wests. I think it's that reminder that we never know what's going on behind closed doors. They're such an 'average' seeming couple
