There’s an Italian show no one talks about but I really enjoyed, The Trial, on Netflix.

newbiename · 23/04/2022 06:38

Beau Sejour was on Walter Presents All4.
Girl wakes up in a hotel room and sees her own dead body in the bath 😳

newbiename · 23/04/2022 06:39

Sorry Hotel Beau Sejour

@FayKnights - yes I loved Criminal too! The U.K. version is great but so are the others (I particularly liked the German version).

A film, not a series, but ‘Smoke & Mirrors’ is a hidden Spanish gem on Netflix - unbelievably it’s true!

To the person who recommended The Invisible Guest, I've just watched this. Absolutely brilliant!! Had me on the edge of my seat. Thank you!

Yay, so glad you enjoyed it. I also think it's fantastic

'Rebecka Martinsson: Arctic Murders'?
on All 4: www.channel4.com/programmes/rebecka-martinsson-arctic-murders?cntsrc=social_share_android_rebecka_martinsson_arctic_murders

This is v good

CanofCant · 24/04/2022 00:12

Yes, I loved The Invisible Guest and The Trial. The Body (Spanish) is also a good one, it used to be on iPlayer but I'm not sure where one would find it now. Oh I also loved Mirage on Netflix. And The Bar!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 24/04/2022 08:37

Not sure if the OP is interested in the recommendations since they haven’t been back but I though I’d add Lupin to the list. The version I watched was dubbed but I think you can find it in the original French.

Love this thread! Thanks

rosegoldwatcher · 24/04/2022 21:36

Well thanks to you all I spent the afternoon watching (for the third time) The Invisible Guest. It is up there in my top ten movies of any language.

Mario Casas (Adrian in TIG) is also in the film The Occupant and series The Innocent, both on Netflix.

CanofCant · 25/04/2022 06:29

He's in The Bar too which I enjoyed.

An oldie but Tell No One-the French film adaptation of the Harlan Coben thriller is excellent. It’s on Netflix. Since then, there’s been a glut of Coben adaptations, including the new Polish one, Hold Tight which I’m currently watching. But this is the best.
if you can find it, Tout pour Elle, with Diane Kruger is excellent about a woman falsely accused of a crime and her husband trying to get her out. It was remade as Next 3 Days with Russell Crowe which IS on Netflix but nowhere near as good.

XelaM · 26/04/2022 11:04

@Subbaxeo I don't think Tell No One is on Netflix anymore? If you like Harlan Coben and have Sky, watch The Five. It's my favourite of the Harlan Coben adaptations

Clawdy · 26/04/2022 12:18

The Five is on Sky? Great, will check that.

Yes it's on Sky

Another vote for The Unlikely Murderer !

I second Walter Presents. Try The Crimson Rivers: French detective drama, some beautiful rural settings but gruesome crimes.
The Truth Will Out: Swedish, about a maverick/unreliable detective who has lost his job and assembles a motley crew and sets up a cold-case unit. First season is better; second one doesn't quite seem to know what to do with itself.
Giri/Haji, although mostly in English, is an excellent shout. One of the best things I've seen in years and criminally (sorry) underseen/underhyped.
Also Hinterland, iPlayer (if it's still there). In Welsh and English. Absolutely beautiful, although very sad.

QuiEstLa · 26/04/2022 12:51

Ah perfect thread for me!

DameHelena · 26/04/2022 13:12

And I meant to say, I agree The Investigation was excellent. They deliberately chose never to show or even name the man who killed Kim Wall; the focus was totally on her, her family and the team who investigated. They worked with her parents and the detective who'd led the investigation, and the parents' actual dog plays the family's dog! It was remarkable for being not just a very good drama in its own right, but also utterly respectful and not at all tasteless or sensationalised.

DameHelena · 29/04/2022 10:01

I just remembered Cardinal too. iPlayer (if it's still there) and it's Canadian, so not foreign, although I think there is occasional French spoken. A bit like Hinterland: sad/grim subject matter and themes of poverty/disenfranchisement/isolation, but very very beautiful to look at, and great acting.
