I enjoyed the last episode. Although I thought Claire's meltdown over the lost bus timetable was a bit ott.

Totally agree. She's (or the character she's been asked to play) been shit this season -not necessarily her fault obviously, but "Claire" scenes are almost unwatchable. The manic gurning, the panic, the screeching, the spraying spittle -she's gone from being an academic, smart girl who over reacts a bit to this bonkers unrealistic character. I know she was out a lot on other projects so I don't know if this was an effort to make her appearances on screen more visible, but god it's been ridiculous.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 20/05/2022 15:29

Totally agree with that about Claire. It was like they'd wound her up to 11 when she should have been at her highly strung but believable 6. Waaay too much screeching.

Also agree that Sr Michael wasn't given her best scenes this series. No need for gimmicks like the De Lorean car. That felt lazy to me. Just have her being her eye-rolly and cutting self.

Overall I did enjoy the series but can see it was weaker than the previous two. Loved Uncle Colm's scene in the police station droning on about the Spanish Armada and how the wee boy's father couldn't possibly have been in the Armada Grin...Loved the episode with the sexy plumber and loved the final, very moving, scene in the polling station.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 20/05/2022 15:39

For example, Sr Michael in her judo gear in the previous series was believable and funny. Arriving in Donegal in the car from Back to the Future? Nah.

DressingGownofDoom · 20/05/2022 15:42

The DeLorean was made in Northern Ireland so Sr Michaels car was just a nod to that.

DressingGownofDoom · 20/05/2022 15:52

@KarenLovesRosario yeah the accents are good! Nicola sounds a bit less Derry City and more generic Northern Ireland country Derry type accent but not everyone living in the city has that strong accent anyway, the Grandad doesn't either.

Liam Neeson was phenomenal in that scene. Genuinely emotional thinking about it.

And the Granda hopping out with the wee girl was just the sweetest.

He was, it must have be a very difficult decision for police officers to make knowing the change that would be ahead for the RUC and the effect on their jobs, aside from anything else.

kayslyre · 20/05/2022 16:00

I was thinking was James joking as surely he'd have known what the 'little brides' were, even being English and all.

I was tempted to turn the volume down whenever Claire appeared. She became almost unwatchable and the screeching and face gurning was too much. When they left her behind in one of the episodes, I'd forgotten her as well.

The face gurning from Erin doesn't irritate me half so much. Though I noticed Erin has lost a lot of weight since the last season? Nothing negative to say, she looks fine either way, just that it was noticeable.

kayslyre · 20/05/2022 16:02

Sister Michael could, and should, have her own spin off series!

Somatronic · 20/05/2022 16:03

@DressingGownofDoom and having to admit members of the community they'd treated like dirt for decades amongst their ranks. Poor things.

toomuchlaundry · 20/05/2022 16:34

@kayslyre i would love a spin off series

Kanaloa · 20/05/2022 18:55

BotCrossHuns · 20/05/2022 13:23

Yes I liked that one - and then thought that if they'd stopped there, it would have been ok ,almost like the sister michael of the past, though she'd have been a little more subtle so that you couldn't ever tell for sure if she actually meant something or there was an innocent explanation.

But then she went on to say something like 'after Jenny's truly awful play...', which didn't fit the character at all. I liked her snide, sarcastic, passive-aggressive way of saying things that was really funny as a result.

I agree. I liked her in the earlier ones when she’d say something like ‘lovely altogether’ then you’d see her rolling her eyes. She never did anything like outwardly saying what an awful play.

The DeLorean was made in Northern Ireland so Sr Michaels car was just a nod to that.

Well that's certainly an interesting factoid. I still feel it was a bit gimmicky, when she's such a cool character that she doesn't need those kinds of props. In my convent school in the 90s all the nuns drove red Toyota Starlets. They must have got them bogof!

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 20/05/2022 21:25

I cried like a child. I cried like I never cried in 18 years of living through it.

JacquelineCarlyle · 20/05/2022 22:19

I've loved it all - series is perfect!

I've just watched season 1 episode 1 again on Netflix and they've changed the music Shock

It's still fab but not the same show! Not sure why they've done that other than to resonate with an American audience but not sure why they needed to change it!

Kanaloa · 20/05/2022 22:48

Is it because it’s on Netflix? A lot of the shows I like change their music when they go to big streaming services or change channels. It’s quite sad! Music is often another character.

JacquelineCarlyle · 20/05/2022 22:54

I assume it's the Netflix effect but it's crazy - like you say, the music of Derry Girls is another character for me and totally transports me back, but the music on Netflix just doesn't have that effect!

KarenLovesRosario · 20/05/2022 22:55

Ten glorious minutes of Sister Michael here. Think I'm going to go back to the beginning yet again.

BananaBlue · 20/05/2022 23:00

Absolutely loved it S3 was weak but I assumed that like grey’s anatomy, scenes/story lines had to be rejuggled and skimmed down due to the pandemic.

My favourite characters are aunt Sarah and the grand/dad duo.

i have a major Q - what is the relevance of Tayto’s? Esp the scene where Grandad has 2 in the presentation that leads to a penny dropping with the rest?

I was a London school child during the IRA campaign and remember hearing/feeling at least 4 bombs (one took our window out at home).

I remember this stopping with the GFA.

There are two Taytos

There's an Irish Tayto and a NI Tayto. Different companies, same name. Not sure how that happened...

But basically they are salted snack metaphors.

BananaBlue · 20/05/2022 23:27

Bloody hell my comments on the IRA are a bit off I think.

I was just recalling as a Londoner, I cannot imagine how it must have been/felt. Nor was I finger pointing.

I learnt so much about the GFA from that one episode, it answered some questions I didn’t know I had re GFA/Brexit/NI. These are grave times.

Thanks re the Tayto’s info I see grandads point.

I’m going to have a good look at that presentation now.

Selkiesarereal · 21/05/2022 00:09

I thought it was a brilliant ending, showing the hope of that time, bringing in a new era for Northern Ireland and for the Derry Girls, made me well up a little.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 21/05/2022 00:25

I watched the last two episodes tonight with my family. I thought it was very well done. The last scene with Erin's reflections and hopes for the future against the backdrop of the vote on the GFA was excellent. It was really very moving.

I was a student in France that time. I remember the excitement, the hope and the optimism. It was an amazing thing, such a turning point.

I agree with comments up thread that this series has been weaker than the other two. But what a great show it has been.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 21/05/2022 00:36

Tayto cheese and onion equals food of the Gods. Tayto Salt and vinegar are enjoyable but no substitute for the real cheese and onion deal. That was why the girls were disappointed that they were ‘only’ salt and vinegar Tayto.

Sister Michael in the Delorean was a nod to the fact that they were built in NI.

Liam Neeson at the the polling booth was truly remarkable acting.

This is brilliant.

Watching it reminded me of how great the earlier series were, and especially Sr Michael's role, which just became a bit unhinged in S3

EarringsandLipstick · 21/05/2022 07:13

Just watched S1 Ep 1 & 2.

Pure brilliance.

Can confirm:

  • Sr Michael passively-aggressively amazing with perfect timing
  • much much less gurning
  • Claire neurotic but many decibels lower
  • Brilliant juxtaposition of normal life with the war in NI.

Such a shame they over-acted the arse out of S3, to use Michelle's syntax
