Sorry girls, but the production was not faithful to the book. Her godfather never indicated that he ever thought of marrying her, and he always intended to leave his fortune to her, as she was the daughter of his best friend. In fact, he was written in a completely different way to how he was portrayed in the programme.

However, I loved the production, even accounting for the unnecessary changes, and am in love with Richard Armitage...

At one point (earlier in the programem) dh commented that she "wouldn't have gone all the way to London in that train even in 18-whatever it was". APPARENTLY BBC had used the wrong sort of rolling stock or engine or something - shock horror!

Personally I didn't watch it to catch glimpses of steam engines
