DH asked me at the end if I would like it if he smouldered now and again. He tried it out, but was hopeless at it - his face is just too warm and kind for smouldering. I reassured him that it's just a fantasy and that I'm much happier married to someone with a good sense of humour.

By the way, David Lodge's 'Nice Work' is a wonderful, modern parody of this genre of Victorian 'industrial' novel. His heroine is an English lecturer at the University of Brummidge who gets involved in an exchange scheme with a factory owner in the light engineering sector. It is absolutely hilarious.

Lodge's heroine says that the plots in all these novels are resolved by marriage, a legacy or emigration.

i too an a fan of north and south lol esp mr thornton oohhh.sadly though those of you wanting it on dvd for xmas may have to wait as theres no plans for it to be released.

I am abroad (would be watching it myself otherwise!) but have been greatly assisted by a woman who is doing a PhD in English Literature and one of the novels is...'North and South'!"
She would be so unbelievably thrilled if I could surprise her with this, so I am trying to track a copy of the series down. Would pay obviously!

Alternatively, does anyone know if/when it will be released for sale?
