Please tell me i'm not the only one on the road to Bebbanburg. Trying not to binge it but....

This truly is one of the best series in years.

Uhtred is sort of a classic Bernard Cornwell manly man, I guess. An outsider, but smart, and his goodness for some reason not properly recognized.

I was shocked to find out the other day he's written some books with a female protagonist, I can't quite imagine it!

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 21/05/2022 15:11

Just spent a lovely few weeks binge watching The Last Kingdom and am now missing it.

Beautiful Uhtred, demented Brida, cheeky Finan, annoying yet enjoyable Aelswith, lovely Beocca, fearless Hild, hideous Aethelred, loyal Aldhelm, commanding Aethelflaed, ruthless Aethelwold, scheming Aethelhelm, lovely Leofric, sweet Osferth, sexy Sigtryggr.

I even ended up liking Haesten in the end.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 21/05/2022 15:12

impressed that by the end I was able to differentiate between all the ethels.

cleareyesfulhearts · 21/05/2022 15:37

Tbf @MurderAtTheBeautyPageant that is pretty impressive!

CaptainThe95thRifles · 22/05/2022 13:15

It's by far the best series on TV since Sharpe 😃

burblish · 23/05/2022 00:36

Another massive Last Kingdom fan here; I got into the series after reading the fantastic books. Such an underrated show - it deserves to be so much bigger. My favourite character is Finan but David Dawson’s portrayal of Alfred is amazing - some of the best acting on the show. Can’t wait for the film!

BoreOfWhabylon · 23/05/2022 10:52

I also read most of the books before I saw the first series @burblish . I was actually quite disappointed initially as Alexander Dreymon didn't look like 'my' Uhtred, but I soon got over that!

My favourite was Leofric. Agree that David Dawson was terific as Alfred. All the cast were great though.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 23/05/2022 11:04

In the very last scene where Hild is walking across the beach to Bebbanburg and she tells the young guy she's with that Uhtred might have information about who is father is, is he Osferth's son? I didn't remember having seen him before.

The fact S 5 was up has completely passed us by for some reason so very happy! Totally agree re David Dawson. Alfred is usually depicted like Chris Hemsworth as Thor and I think this is so much nearer to the scholarly, unwell man Alfred was in reality. Gripping performance among so many good ones.

I did hope for the redemption of Aethelwold. His 'grovel' alongside Uhtred is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 23/05/2022 11:06

I agree that David Dawson was great. At first I thought 'he doesn't look very kingly', but I soon bought in. I was interested to read that modern historians think it may have been crohn's diseases that he suffered with.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 23/05/2022 11:07

The scene where Aethelwold murdered Ragnar was so gruesome. Poor Ragnar. Up until then I thought Aehtwold might redeem himself too!

It's Osbert, Uhtred's youngest son. His mother was Gisela, who died giving birth to him. Hild was at the birth and told Uhtred of her death. Looks like she has brought him up but not told him who his father is. Maybe something to be explored in the film?

It makes his achievements even more impressive, doesn't it? I'm looking forward to seeing more of Aethelflaed. Absolutely fascinating woman historically and my take from what is known of her is that she must have been given a decent education by Alfred (as well as being a chip off the old block) She's the little girl we see lurking in the shadows in early seasons, watching quietly, I think.

Oh I seeeeee. Thank you! Had completely forgotten that he and Gisela had a third child.

BoreOfWhabylon · 23/05/2022 11:38

I think I'm going to have a big rewatch binge, going right back to the start Grin.

sashagabadon · 23/05/2022 11:38

I too had a soft spot for aethlewold. He was treated harshly ( as was the way for rivals in those days of course). His father the king dies and his birthright and expectation of succeeding his father and becoming king is taken from him by others and he has no say and is just cast out. Goes from aetheling / heir / prince to nothing over night! I’d be pissed off too!

sashagabadon · 23/05/2022 11:41

I also agree re. Aethleflead. Why don’t we celebrate her more in England. She’s a great role model for girls imo!
forget Edward it’s his sister we should be admiring

BoreOfWhabylon · 23/05/2022 11:45

@MurderAtTheBeautyPageant Hild called him Osbert. In the preceding episode Uhtred met with Hild at Lindisfarne. He said he was there because he needed help. “No, no, he’s too young,” said Hild, “Not his help" Uhtred replied.

I clearly missed some details in all the excitement! Grin

Anyone else in love with sigtryggr Blush only finished two episodes so far

Yes!! He’s so gorgeous!!

I was actually really disappointed in his ending in the series. I felt he deserved more.

I’ve read 4 of the books. Father Pyrlig dies of old age fairly early on, so I’m glad they changed his destiny and kept him in the TV show.

Id love to do a Last Kingdom tour of England one day. I find the history so interesting.

TigerLilyTail · 23/05/2022 11:51

I re-watched the whole series before the final season as I definitely needed a refresher.

Oh yes! We could all pile into a coach and set off around the country! I'd love it!

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 23/05/2022 11:57

Sigtryggr was gorgeous. Marriage to Stiorra really mellowed him, when they were all hanging out in the Welsh castle he was considerably more menacing!

Felt for Stiorra having such an annoying BIL

sashagabadon · 23/05/2022 12:25

I was pleased to see Bamburgh (Bebbanberg as was) beach and castle voted number 1 this year! I immediately thought of Utred and how proud he would be 😁

Yes, you can really imagine his AIBU can't you? I think it would be a resounding YANBU (but stop short of murder, best revenge is a life well lived and other sensible advice) 😂
