This truly is one of the best series in years.

At least Edward has a beard now! He looks older than his mother Grin

Worriednow21 · 13/03/2022 15:56

I've just finished season 5. I've really enjoyed it, but can't help thinking the last few episodes felt rushed to get to the story's ending. Looking forward to the movie that's going to follow it.

windy321 · 13/03/2022 21:13

Anyone else in love with sigtryggr Blush only finished two episodes so far

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/03/2022 21:15

Just finished and feeling a bit bereft now Sad

I agree that they packed a lot into the series 5 to complete the story arc and it would have been far better if they hadn't had to do that. Still loved it though.

LassoOfTruth · 13/03/2022 21:24

Loved this show! I’m regretting bingeing series 5 - nothing for it but to start all over again! Destiny is all!

talkingdeadscot · 13/03/2022 23:56

I've only got to S5 episode 5 and not sure how many more deaths I can take!

MangyInseam · 15/03/2022 23:13

Oh, I didn't know this was out - I'll have to watch this week.

It really is one of the better series out there. It was very noticible to me when it first started, it was near the end of GoT, and it really highlighted how bad the writing in GoT had become. And it's largely managed to maintain that.

I agree the ageing is a problem, but it is difficult with these books that cover such a long period of time. It's a bit of a fine line, too much ageing of young actors tends to look silly. And I don't like it when they change actors altogether.

Is it coming to a different ending than the book series, though? I'm getting toward the end of those and it seemed to me that last season it was heading in a somewhat different direction.

JadeSeahorse · 16/03/2022 14:06

Another huge fan here!

Only realised it was back yesterday 🙄 and we watched ep 1 of S5 last night. However, it is so long since we saw S4 - over 2 years for us - that I have completely lost the thread of who is who etc. so DH and I have decided to binge watch again completely from S1.😋 Can't wait!! Another few weeks of the gorgeous Uthred - or whatever the spelling is!

Soubriquet · 16/03/2022 14:29

I have literally binged this within a week Grin

I actually liked Brida…even if she did go a bit nuts. I also liked Skade. I thought she was interesting.

I really can’t stand Edward. I also get very confused sometimes between all the Aeth names. So many Aeth names

SeedsSeedsSeeds · 16/03/2022 14:50

I have read all the book and finished series 1-4. It's been so long since they were out that I would like to watch again before starting on 5. Very excited! I tried to watch Vikings and didn't even make it to the end of series 1, Last Kingdom is so much better.

LazyMareofEastown · 16/03/2022 15:52

I binged watched all of S5 over two child-free days this weekend. Amazing. Wrapped everything up perfectly for me. I cried at least twice every episode. I really felt for Brida and actually really enjoyed her little odd couple road trip bit with Pyrlig where they discussed religion and death etc.

In terms of the ages of the actors I am usually the first to leap on stuff like this as it ordinarily spoils my enjoyment but I can't bring myself to be bothered by it in TLK. I'm 100% able to suspend my disbelief given how much I love the show. It's obviously a deliberate and ballsy choice on the part of the showrunners. They value their actors and chose to do this rather than change the cast (like The Crown) or go down dodgy prosthetic/CGI ageing routes. Eliza Butterworth (Aelswith) in particular did a bloody marvellous job of portraying a woman so much older than her years. Her voice and mannerisms were just superb.

What a show. Am tempted to go back and start again! Tried Vikings twice but just couldn't get on with it 😕.

Magdalena543 · 16/03/2022 16:04

God I love this show, and the fact it's, loosely, based on historical fact. Fantastic cast, but it irritates me that the actress playing Aelswith (who's a very good actress) is the same age as the actress playing her daughter Aethelfled! Not keen on the casting of Edward either, he's like a petulant toddler.

Destiny is all!

Destiny is all!

But initially, the daughter was played by an infant and Aelswith was the right age. If they'd done it the other way round and the actress was playing younger it would have been annoying at the beginning.

I don't think one is really better than the other in the end.

Magdalena543 · 16/03/2022 19:42

Fair point! 😄

XelaM · 16/03/2022 21:14

I only watched it for Toby Regbo Blush as I had a crush on him after"Reign" 😍 He was better as Francis though than in "The Last Kingdom". Thought it was really predictable and not that great. Most of the characters are unlikable

DuesToTheDirt · 16/03/2022 21:24

Yes, Aelswith has always looked young for the part - not surprising since the actress is 28! I guess 22 when The Last Kingdom first came out.
hapagirl · 17/03/2022 11:22

I've found my people! It's my second favourite series (Call the Midwife is number 1) of all time. I'm rationing to one a night because I don't want it to end. I watched episode 4 last night and my heart broke.
I never skip the recap because I cannot miss "Destiny is all".
Agree that the (lack of) ageing is quite distracting but can overlook it.
I want Brida to come back into the fold.
When I finish I'm going to start at the beginning again.

Adelais · 19/03/2022 22:42

I’ve finished season 5, actually got quite emotional at the end!
Ive loved every series and glad Uhtred finally got bebbenburg back. I was worried at the start of the series they were just going to focus on the Dane versus Saxon battles and we’d never hear about bebbenburg again.

I had wondered what happened to Uhtreds third child he had with Gisela.

I like Vikings too but not as much as the last kingdom.

Florabella · 20/03/2022 08:57

I thought they did a great job with the ending. Such a fantastic series. I might have to watch from the start again.

Sux2buthen · 20/03/2022 15:32

We finished it last night although I didn't want it to end!
I felt bad for Haestan and for some reason when brida died I started bawling Grin
Aelswith was brilliant, I actually loved listening to her talk
Season four felt a bit too political and I'm usually very anti violence but by the end I was telling the characters to get scrapping Grin
I was happy they didn't go for a depressing sad ending and I'm very much looking forward to the film.

zukiecat · 21/03/2022 18:52

The Last Kingdom is simply just the best thing that's ever been on tv, it is brilliant.

I've lost count of how many times I've watched S1-S4.

I'm on the third viewing of S5, totally obsessed with TLK, this period of history is one of my favourites, though I'll never get over Thyra's needless and violent death.

Vibeke's death did for me in S5, and I keep thinking about it, poor Brida 😓⚔️⚔️

FromOurHatsToOurFeet · 23/03/2022 13:29

I know they are filming the film of the last 3 books but any idea when it'll be out?

Stressybetty · 23/03/2022 13:46

loved it. Will be re-watching the whole lot. Things that bother me are why Utred is the only one with an accent. I know he's both Saxon and Dane but time after time it's seems like he's the only one actually capable of achieving anything, killing the right people and being sent all over the place to sort problems out. Surely others are able to do things? DH felt having him cry when he got bebbenburg back was a bit wet and he would have been more manly about it!

Nicoise · 23/03/2022 16:25

I watched an interview with Alexander Dreymon. I was surprised to hear him speak with an American accent as I'd understood he was German (born Germany, raised USA) . He was asked about his accent in the show and he said basically he came up with it to set him apart from the others. He's not quite Saxon, he's not quite Dane, so he wanted to occupy a space between the two. This included having a different accent. I often try to mimic his accent but can't do it, it's so unusual!

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 23/03/2022 17:30

I’ve loved this. Dh was watching it first and I got into it season 4. So I have started again from the beginning and have enjoyed it so much.

Love that the women are strong. It pains me when Uthred never gets the praise or recognition for all he does. I did also wonder at the accent though, he was brought up and largely stayed in England so couldn’t understand why his accent was the strongest. And I’m sure it started off more English at the beginning.

Think I might try the books, the era is fascinating and I’m embarrassed by how ignorant I am about the history of our country Blush

I found the relationships between men in power and Uthred interesting. They seemed to hate him because they saw the qualities in him that they wished for themselves. Coupled with needing him to further their own ambitions, and also wanting him to fail personally.

Can’t wait for the film!
