New drama on a Monday - 4 part drama

Olivier award winning actor, Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones, Dublin Murders, Vienna Blood) plays local police officer Sergeant PJ Collins, a gentle man who hides from people and fills his days with comfort food and half-hearted police work. He is one of life’s outsiders, lovable, but lonely and a bit rubbish at his job.

When the body of long-lost local legend Tommy Burke who vanished 20yrs ago , is discovered, PJ is called to solve a serious crime for the first time in his career. Unearthing long buried secrets, PJ finally connects with the village he has tried so hard to avoid.

Siobhán McSweeney (Derry Girls, Nowhere Special, Anthony) plays vulnerable, messy Bríd Riordan. Bríd had been due to marry Tommy before his untimely disappearance, whilst Charlene McKenna is youthful, stuck Evelyn Ross who desperately loved him. The two women are at the heart of the community and neither is above suspicion.

Brenda Fricker takes the role of Lizzie Meany, a shy presence in PJ’s life who has been battling her own demons and secrets as PJ comes to discover…

Episode 1

When human remains are found in a sleepy Irish village, Sergeant PJ Collins finally has a genuine crime to solve. As the gruesome discovery ripples through the community, it threatens to expose a lifetime of secrets.

Blueberrycreampie · 28/03/2022 21:49

The body is Tommy. Mrs Meany being his mother is why his DNA didn't match his supposed parents.

They've messed around the back story massively though.

I'm a bit confused- why did they say it wasn't Tommy's?
Ellmau · 28/03/2022 22:44

They thought the body couldn't be Tommy because they exhumed his parents and the DNA didn't match.

Mrs Meany explained that was because the Burke's own baby died at birth, was secretly buried at the farm (and is the baby skeleton just discovered) and was replaced by her baby, who grew up as Tommy Burke. The death of the original Baby Tommy and the birth of Mrs Meany's baby were not reported to the authorities, and everyone else who knew had since died, so only Mrs M knew the truth.

Clawdy · 28/03/2022 23:33

Yes, it took me a while to realise why the body was Tommy's. Wonder why Evelyn is so horrible to the young lad, not sure why she kicked him last week when he said he loved her.

Blueberrycreampie · 29/03/2022 00:46

Ah of course. Thank you!

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/03/2022 09:27

Yes. Duh.

I’ve worked out it was Tommy as mum they dug up wasn’t his mum. Or his dad at that matter

So dna didn’t match

So it is Tommy. I was right about Brenda fricker having a bigger part

So who killed Tommy

I thought it was odd Mrs Meany only had a small part until tonight. I enjoyed her story ~ she had an awful lot to say and was it was probably done in more than one go and then put together but she's a good actress.

I'm definitely still not reading my book until this is finished as everyone is saying it's different !

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/03/2022 17:09

Yes I was thinking take a breath 😂😂

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/03/2022 18:17

I've just caught up. Poor Mrs Meany. I'm wondering if Mrs was a courtesy title or if she subsequently married but after listening to her account of the rape I imagine she wouldn't.

Ellmau · 29/03/2022 18:55

No, she never married. In the book someone (the parish priest? - I can't remember) advised her to adopt the title Mrs for respectability when she became a housekeeper.

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/03/2022 19:54

I thought so. The poor girl must have been traumatised. I really want to read the book now.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/03/2022 11:19

Did no one 40yrs ago query where her baby went

She was preg. Then wasn’t

OP posts:
BIWI · 30/03/2022 11:52

Presumably either no-one knew she was pregnant (i.e. she didn't show very much) or when she was working for them she kept herself hidden away till she did show?

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/03/2022 12:15

Ah good point @BIWI

I missed it this Monday as my friend came out of hospital Monday night so I went around to stay with her. Oh well, if it hasn't finished yet I am sure next Monday I can pick it up again... or not.
