New drama on a Monday - 4 part drama

Olivier award winning actor, Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones, Dublin Murders, Vienna Blood) plays local police officer Sergeant PJ Collins, a gentle man who hides from people and fills his days with comfort food and half-hearted police work. He is one of life’s outsiders, lovable, but lonely and a bit rubbish at his job.

When the body of long-lost local legend Tommy Burke who vanished 20yrs ago , is discovered, PJ is called to solve a serious crime for the first time in his career. Unearthing long buried secrets, PJ finally connects with the village he has tried so hard to avoid.

Siobhán McSweeney (Derry Girls, Nowhere Special, Anthony) plays vulnerable, messy Bríd Riordan. Bríd had been due to marry Tommy before his untimely disappearance, whilst Charlene McKenna is youthful, stuck Evelyn Ross who desperately loved him. The two women are at the heart of the community and neither is above suspicion.

Brenda Fricker takes the role of Lizzie Meany, a shy presence in PJ’s life who has been battling her own demons and secrets as PJ comes to discover…

Episode 1

When human remains are found in a sleepy Irish village, Sergeant PJ Collins finally has a genuine crime to solve. As the gruesome discovery ripples through the community, it threatens to expose a lifetime of secrets.

Brenda Fricker, Siobhán McSweeney, Charlene McKenna, Helen Behan and Pauline McLynn cast alongside Conleth Hill in ITV’s four part adaptation of Graham Norton’s bestselling novel Holding

Directed by Kathy Burke, written by Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Karen Cogan and produced by Happy Prince and Port Pictures in association with Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and co-produced by Virgin Media Television

Academy award winning actress Brenda Fricker will return to television to star alongside Conleth Hill in ITV’s four part adaptation based upon Graham Norton’s funny and tenderly perceptive debut novel, Holding, which is located in West Cork, Ireland.

His landlady kept forcing food on him too.

the80sweregreat · 15/03/2022 16:24

It won't be that hard to find the culprit in a town that small !! Lol 😂
Dunno what his worried about , plus he has burgundy suit to help him and the stern policewoman too!
Just interview them all , will only take a few hours !

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/03/2022 17:01

But eating slices of bread and cheese slices

Assume it’s laziness but I could be wrong @the80sweregreat

the80sweregreat · 15/03/2022 18:44

It must be an eating disorder , those cheese slices didn't touch the sides and they are horrible .

The other lady who was jilted originally is an alcoholic
The one having it away with the smug sixth former!
They all have a secret or four in west cork !

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/03/2022 18:49

Brid looks a lot older then Evelyn

Tho guess that’s booze

Tho why but lots of little bottles of wine

Buy normal size

the80sweregreat · 15/03/2022 19:01

Maybe those small bottles are easier to hide ?
She had a big bottle in the fridge before her shop.

Clawdy · 15/03/2022 22:01

Yes, I assumed the little bottles were easier to hide all over the house.

Ellmau · 15/03/2022 22:54

In the book Brid and Evelyn were never friends. Brid was a few years older; Tommy (and later her husband) proposed because she had inherited her father's farm.

In the book he disappeared just after the engagement was announced, not on the wedding day.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/03/2022 07:34

Think it was his stag do he vanished

MYbe brid found out About Evelyn

Weird years ago no one looked for him

MYbe brid found out About Evelyn

Weird years ago no one looked for him

But they mentioned pregnant Brid anxiously waiting for him in church (apparently not in the book) she would have to be a good actress if she'd murdered him.
lazymum99 · 16/03/2022 08:48

If Brid was pregnant who is the child. This happened 20 years ago

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/03/2022 08:59

Her Mum referred to having had to let her dress out three times so I assumed she was pregnant. If it was 20 years ago then Evelyn must have been at primary school when she was shagging him. It can't have been that long ago. I'd assumed Brid's eldest was the child and her husband married her for the farm.

Evelyn said she was 17 at the time. So 37 now

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/03/2022 09:30

OK. I need to read the book or watch again with subtitles.

Deadringer · 16/03/2022 09:41

Holding is my favourite of GN's books but i don't have ITV, hoping to see it soon but this thread will keep me going til then. He is very obese and really ashamed about it in the book, which was really central to his character.

Yes they showed him looking at self in mirror unhappily at stomach

I missed the preg bit. Wonder if she lost the baby as who else could it be

Her kids are young

Really enjoying this, love all the characters. I've never seen the actor who plays Collins before now, his expressions are very good.

Didn't know Graham Norton had written any books, may have to buy this one, but won't read it till the programme's finished !

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/03/2022 14:20

That’s why I’ve brought his other two @butterpuffed

If I like I will buy this one

But then don’t like reading a book knowing what will happen

Ellmau · 16/03/2022 19:39

Brid wasn't pregnant. Tommy barely kissed her. The point was, she was plain and none of the boys fancied her, but her mum said wtte of not to worry, once her father was dead and she had inherited the farm some young man who wanted to farm would be happy to marry her. That applied to both Tommy, and then to the bloke she does marry.

timestheyarechanging · 16/03/2022 19:43

I'm enjoying it. Particularly the accents. My exMIL was Irish and since she sadly died, I don't go there anymore, but it takes me back to happier times

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/03/2022 19:47

Who said she was preg

Or just the dress needing to be let out

Could be food

It was me. I assumed letting the wedding dress out 3 times meant she was pregnant. It happened to someone I know recently. The wedding was deferred twice due to lock down and life goes on.
TheAbbotOfUnreason · 17/03/2022 07:30

I gave up after 20 minutes, found it so stilted and contrived, and the policeman character made me cringe. Think I’ll just stick to the book.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/03/2022 07:41

Ah @CaptainMyCaptain

Same as mine. Got cancelled twice. May 20 and May 21. Finally got married July last year so all restrictions lifted

Weirdly I changed my wedding dress. What I got in 2019 and loved I decided I didn’t in 2021 🙀

@mrsfeatherbottom

Loved the book. Can't wait for this.
I also loved the book so be prepared for a lot of changes. I was bitterly disappointed simply because the book is so much better. Characters are altered, added and well ………it lost the human empathy that Graham Norton put into his book. Those who haven’t read the book might enjoy it. I hope you do.
