New drama on a Monday - 4 part drama

Olivier award winning actor, Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones, Dublin Murders, Vienna Blood) plays local police officer Sergeant PJ Collins, a gentle man who hides from people and fills his days with comfort food and half-hearted police work. He is one of life’s outsiders, lovable, but lonely and a bit rubbish at his job.

When the body of long-lost local legend Tommy Burke who vanished 20yrs ago , is discovered, PJ is called to solve a serious crime for the first time in his career. Unearthing long buried secrets, PJ finally connects with the village he has tried so hard to avoid.

Siobhán McSweeney (Derry Girls, Nowhere Special, Anthony) plays vulnerable, messy Bríd Riordan. Bríd had been due to marry Tommy before his untimely disappearance, whilst Charlene McKenna is youthful, stuck Evelyn Ross who desperately loved him. The two women are at the heart of the community and neither is above suspicion.

Brenda Fricker takes the role of Lizzie Meany, a shy presence in PJ’s life who has been battling her own demons and secrets as PJ comes to discover…

Episode 1

When human remains are found in a sleepy Irish village, Sergeant PJ Collins finally has a genuine crime to solve. As the gruesome discovery ripples through the community, it threatens to expose a lifetime of secrets.

Brenda Fricker, Siobhán McSweeney, Charlene McKenna, Helen Behan and Pauline McLynn cast alongside Conleth Hill in ITV’s four part adaptation of Graham Norton’s bestselling novel Holding

Directed by Kathy Burke, written by Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Karen Cogan and produced by Happy Prince and Port Pictures in association with Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and co-produced by Virgin Media Television

Academy award winning actress Brenda Fricker will return to television to star alongside Conleth Hill in ITV’s four part adaptation based upon Graham Norton’s funny and tenderly perceptive debut novel, Holding, which is located in West Cork, Ireland.

I don't remember the teenager that Evelyn was shagging - was he in the book?

DH (who hasn't read the book) didn't think it was great but we will keep watching. I love West Cork and the accents. Have spent many holidays there.

I love Siobahn McSweeney, so I would watch it just for her.

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/03/2022 09:16

Siobhan McSweeney is on R4 now.

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/03/2022 09:18

Avoid it if you don't want spoilers though!

I know! And it never occurred to me that might happen!

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/03/2022 20:25

Hopefully we will work out who is who now

I am still enjoying this but so many troubled and strange characters, almost caricatures of 'Irish' people which as an Irish person I find a bit 😳. I have never lived in Eire though so can't speak from experience. Wonder whose body it is?

Blueberrycreampie · 21/03/2022 22:13

Also, I am worried about the animals on the farm - who is looking after them?

Clawdy · 21/03/2022 22:17

That was a very different sex scene! And I absolutely loved that scene where he was making Brid laugh earlier! Such a good actor!

Yes I loved those bits! I've just realised where I've seen Brid before duh!
Blondeshavemorefun · 22/03/2022 13:43

Just see. As was working

So pj and brid got all sexy

Even with unshaven pits

His dancing and benny hill was impressive

I was wondering if it wasn’t Tommy in the grave

Pj landlady is jealous and wrote the Nasty noteto brid

Is he normally the only police officer in this place then?

And is his house used as a police station??

And the woman who cooks for him. I can't work out who she is to him. If she's a housekeeper employed by him himself or employed by the police as she seems privy to their conversations about police work?! I can't work out what she's doing there

butterpuffed · 23/03/2022 07:36

@purpleme12

It's the other way around. There used to be lots of village police stations which incorporated a home for the serving police officer here in England [not sure about Ireland]

I think most of them were sold off. My brother actually bought one and there was a little room in there which used to be a cell ! Without the original door !!

Yes. Police houses/station used to be a common thing.
Blondeshavemorefun · 23/03/2022 10:39

Sure we would all love a cell with a locked door 😂😂

Can’t believe PJ is Lord Varys! Grin Getting quite into it now, all good characters except for Evelyn!

RaraRachael · 24/03/2022 22:05

I was really underwhelmed by the whole thing. When it finished we were, "Was that it?" I may get the book as PPs seem to think that it's much better than the TV programme.

DazzlingDarrenDring · 26/03/2022 07:38

I packed this in after two episodes, two 'knowing ' and self satisfied for me.

I also thought Conleith Hill came accross as a Peter Kay character, over exaggerated and a bit cringy.

Not for me I'm afraid.

BIWI · 26/03/2022 08:48

I enjoyed the second ep much more than the first - after the first one I was wondering if it was worth bothering with.

purpleme12 · 26/03/2022 10:14

Me too

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/03/2022 11:15

I want to know who is I. The ground

Plus then where is Tommy

Will he get together with Evelyn

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 26/03/2022 11:15

Maybe Tommy killed the man and why he did a runner
