New drama on a Monday - 4 part drama

Olivier award winning actor, Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones, Dublin Murders, Vienna Blood) plays local police officer Sergeant PJ Collins, a gentle man who hides from people and fills his days with comfort food and half-hearted police work. He is one of life’s outsiders, lovable, but lonely and a bit rubbish at his job.

When the body of long-lost local legend Tommy Burke who vanished 20yrs ago , is discovered, PJ is called to solve a serious crime for the first time in his career. Unearthing long buried secrets, PJ finally connects with the village he has tried so hard to avoid.

Siobhán McSweeney (Derry Girls, Nowhere Special, Anthony) plays vulnerable, messy Bríd Riordan. Bríd had been due to marry Tommy before his untimely disappearance, whilst Charlene McKenna is youthful, stuck Evelyn Ross who desperately loved him. The two women are at the heart of the community and neither is above suspicion.

Brenda Fricker takes the role of Lizzie Meany, a shy presence in PJ’s life who has been battling her own demons and secrets as PJ comes to discover…

Episode 1

When human remains are found in a sleepy Irish village, Sergeant PJ Collins finally has a genuine crime to solve. As the gruesome discovery ripples through the community, it threatens to expose a lifetime of secrets.

Brenda Fricker, Siobhán McSweeney, Charlene McKenna, Helen Behan and Pauline McLynn cast alongside Conleth Hill in ITV’s four part adaptation of Graham Norton’s bestselling novel Holding

Directed by Kathy Burke, written by Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Karen Cogan and produced by Happy Prince and Port Pictures in association with Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and co-produced by Virgin Media Television

Academy award winning actress Brenda Fricker will return to television to star alongside Conleth Hill in ITV’s four part adaptation based upon Graham Norton’s funny and tenderly perceptive debut novel, Holding, which is located in West Cork, Ireland.

I knew that GN had written books , but I've never read them. I might give them a go now as this is looking good with a gentle humor and interesting characters!

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/03/2022 21:38

I may try his books as well @the80sweregreat

He's written 3 books and they are all great. He's a fantastic writer.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/03/2022 22:02

My money is on the policeman's hired help ( Brenda fricker )
I don't like the school boy much , far too smug

Ineedastyleicon · 14/03/2022 22:12

The other 2 are better in my opinion.

Blueberrycreampie · 14/03/2022 22:25

Thank you! Some 'interesting' characters. Must remember to watch it next week!
Cocolapew · 14/03/2022 22:45

I enjoyed it, I do love a Cork accent.
His books are very enjoyable, he's a great writer.

Ellmau · 14/03/2022 22:47

Oh dear, I was very disappointed. Coarse and lacking in subtlety compared to the book which is much better.

TBF the book usually is.

Evelyn is miscast.

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/03/2022 08:19

I missed some possibly vital words of the dialogue so I would like to read the book now.

purpleme12 · 15/03/2022 08:55

Not sure what to think of this one yet to be honest
Not sure whether I like it or not

But interesting people's opinions on his books
I haven't read them
Perhaps it's worth a try

MrsMinge · 15/03/2022 09:01

What relationship does the girl swimming have with the blond woman?Think I missed a vital bit of info there 🤔

You can tell this has been taken from a book that has been written well. All the characters are interesting and I was left wanting to know more at the end of episode 1. Looking forward to next week.

I think the blonde woman, who had been pregnant at the time, was jilted by him at the altar. The dark haired girl had been shagging him. Clearly not that fussy as she was shagging an under 18 in the old ambulance.

I will try subtitles next week.

MrsMinge · 15/03/2022 10:48

Ah thank you @CaptainMyCaptain, that makes sense now Grin

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/03/2022 12:07

Evelyn swimming was the secret /lover of Tommy

Who also likes 17yrs

Brid was his fiancé. Blonde drunk one who makes cakes

They used to be best friends

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 15/03/2022 15:53

Why couldn't the policeman ( can't rem his name !) get involved with the two women having a row out swimming at the end ? He kept muttering about it !
I still think his housekeeper lady is involved in Tommy's death

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/03/2022 16:03

I think he is used to easy policing

So doesn’t like to get involved as such

Ans seems to have some eating disorder as well

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 15/03/2022 16:14

Ahh, just being lazy then blonds!!
Just Wants to eat secretly.
