I have bit the bullet and bought Starzplay for the time it's on - not paying for it after - and now can't wait.

So glad to have found this thread. It has been a long time since I read the book that this season is based on, but so far it seems to be following the book fairly closely.

SapatSea · 21/03/2022 09:02

I laughed when Claire gave Tom Christie "Tom Jones" to read. Of course, he would be disgusted by it - what was she thinking? I'm glad they have started to ask about how Tom could be Malva's dad as that was bugging me.

Fergus seems to worry a lot about making money for his family (Marsali seems to spin to provide it) but Brianna and Roger just seem to float along doing whatever takes their fancy - not very fair.

Lessstressedhemum · 21/03/2022 12:35

Episode 3 is heartbreaking. It's very close to the book. Poor, poor Fergus and Marsali.
I really can't stick Roger and Brianna. She is so whiny and annoying and almost everything about Roger burns my biscuits. It especially rips me how he suddenly finds faith and decides to become a minister out of thin air. He just sort of falls into it and, all of a sudden, everyone is calling him "Minister". It annoyed me in the books, too. They are useless and just seem to float about leeching off Jamie.
Re: Brianna's inventions, in one of the books (might be this one, I can't remember) she spends ages trying to install indoor plumbing and underfloor heating. It seems to be a lack of suitable materials for the pipes that's the problem. She wastes ages trying to build her own kiln to fire her own clay and failing.

One thing that really annoys me about the whole thing, show and book, is how they pronounce Brianna's name. It's very American. In Scotland it would be pronounce BREE-anna with a kind of swallowed, very short, soft ah sound. Seeing as she's named after Jamie's dad, you'd think that would be the pronunciation they used. Certainly, in Voyager, Jamie tells Claire that's how it's said.

SenecaFallsRedux · 21/03/2022 13:37

At least they pronounce it with a short "a". I think most people in the US with that name these days pronounce it Bree-AH-na.

I agree that she and Roger are irritating. In the book and in the TV series. Of the second generation, Marsali is definitely my favorite.

MoChridhe · 21/03/2022 15:12

Roger has grown on me this season. I like that he is taking control and not being a victim anymore. I love Malva not as a character but love the way the actress is playing her, definitely well cast.

Lessstressedhemum · 21/03/2022 15:27

Marsali is awesome. Strong, capable, brave. A real Pioneer woman. Fergus becomes really good, too..
I think show Brianna and Roger annoy me even more than book ones. They are awful and don't get much better.

Maggiesgirl · 21/03/2022 17:40

I love Roger ( of is it just Richard Rankin ) can't stand Brianna though.

Think Lauren Lyle ( Marsali) & Jessica Reynolds (Malva) will be faces we will see again.

Lauren Lyle has just film Karen Pirie a Val McDirmand book. She is the title role in it.

Lauren Lyle had a small but pivotal role in Vigil too. A couple of years ago I was in a cafe and Richard Rankin and the actor who plays Ian Sr were at the next table, gossiping loudly about Sam Heughan!

BonnesVacances · 22/03/2022 09:11

Richard Rankin, Steven Cree and Sam Heughan all seem to know each other very well, from even before Outlander. They have lots of banter on Twitter.

Maggiesgirl · 22/03/2022 15:25

@KillingMeDeftly I would have died cnd gone to heaven. Wink

Was the gossip kind or not, and can you tell us any of it Blush

OP posts:
KillingMeDeftly · 22/03/2022 17:38

@Maggiesgirl Nothing too incriminating - just poking fun at all the muscly selfies Sam puts on Instagram!

AngeloMysterioso · 23/03/2022 21:23

I have somehow managed to persuade my husband to watch Men In Kilts by telling him there’s bound to be some stuff about whisky and golf… and now I get to spend an hour perving on Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish Grin

Maggiesgirl · 24/03/2022 08:23

DH is a Highlander, do getting him to watch MIK was fairly easy, but he won't watch Outlander, when it comes on he picks up his phone - but he doesn't leave the room 😆

KillingMeDeftly · 24/03/2022 13:24

It's funny, I have so many friends who tell me their husbands refuse to watch Outlander. I think they presume it's going to be some wishy-washy romance rather than the action-packed drama it is. Sure there's romance but Sense and Sensibility it ain't!

MoChridhe · 24/03/2022 15:00

I got my DH to watch Outlander when he was down with Covid at Christmas. He loves it. Though he finds Claire annoying and tends to fast forward the Doctor Claire parts.

MoChridhe · 24/03/2022 15:03

DHs favourite season is season 2. He loved all the Paris bits and the OTT set designs and fashion. His favourite character was the Duke of Sandringham.

MoChridhe · 27/03/2022 14:34

Malva!!!! Episode 4 was good. I especially loved Jamie mentioning Faith, biith books and show forgot about her ( until Bees that us). But omg MalvaGrin

SapatSea · 27/03/2022 19:37

Jessica Reynolds is doing a great job as Malva. She's so petite and pretty but weird and a bit scary.

Lessstressedhemum · 27/03/2022 22:35

I really enjoyed ep4. Poor Ian Og. So much pain.

Malva is just creepy. What a great job Jessica Reynolds is doing there.

Maggiesgirl · 28/03/2022 09:17

Ep4 was brilliant. Jessica Reynolds plays Malva with just the right amount if creepiness and vulnerability.

redpickle · 29/03/2022 19:31

I'm finding this season a bit slow, anyone else?
Ep 4 was heavy on the Young Ian, which may be why I didn't like it. Great character but the actor who plays him is just terrible. I can barely watch him. There's something so 'drama school' about his performance and it just doesn't feel authentic at all. I was unmoved by the long-awaited telling of his story.
Agree Lauren Lyle and Cesar Domboy are fantastic!

KillingMeDeftly · 29/03/2022 23:02

Agree @redpickle. I don't find Ian that interesting so the episode was a bit dull for me. Nice to see the return of Kaheraton for a bit though - the actor has charisma.

Malva is odd, as is her brother. What does it say that Tom seems the most 'normal' one in the family??

Florabella · 30/03/2022 16:32

I think I may finally be falling out of love with Outlander. I totally agree with the pp that plays Ian. He does feel very stage school, and I found the last episode dull. These last seasons aren't a patch on the first two.

SapatSea · 02/04/2022 11:07

I agree with you all about Ian actor. I don't find him interesting at all so the episode was a bit flat. It's all becoming a bit Dr Quinn Claire, Medicine Woman, almost procedural. Despite saying that, I still look forward to seeing it.

I also find Brianna a bit too passive and diffident, no real spark. Not sure if it's the writing, the casting (she is very unlike book Brianna) or the acting.

KillingMeDeftly · 02/04/2022 13:13

Book Brianna is meant to be over 6ft tall and very striking rather than conventionally pretty like Sophie Skelton. More like a young Julia Roberts.
