BBC 2 8pm tonight (feb 1st) Tom Kerridge is one of the new judges.

Can't wait to see some soil and steam and shoehorned themes.

I thought Anita and Brian were vegan...

Stillcrikey · 24/02/2022 20:15

Ooh. The cauli gets a second chance to express itself. I for one can hardly contain myself 🤔

JessCat75 · 24/02/2022 20:16

Ah at least it's an Eastenders legend, love Anita

jay55 · 24/02/2022 20:18

The judge agreed it should have been jelly, brilliant.

Aside from the wine, this dish has no connection to Keith Floyd.

lettingthedaysgoby · 24/02/2022 20:30

Again with pan roasting - surely you roast things in an oven not on a hob? You can do it in a pan, in an oven...

JessCat75 · 24/02/2022 20:33

Totally agree
JessCat75 · 24/02/2022 20:36

@jay55

The matching the brief is ridiculously pants. A duck dish for Grange Hill, venison for eastenders. As good as the cigar looked Churchill felt a stretch too.
I know, Duck for Grange Hill, absolutely zero connection to that programme.
EsmaCannonball · 24/02/2022 20:39

They could have done the brain and head cheese lollipop for Grange Hill and called it Just Say No.

I don't get the connection between wild deer and eastenders. I think of cockles, eels, fish markets, pie and mash, curry, something with ale to reference the pub, Arthur's allotment. Sorry I'm an episode behind and also still not over someone saying the words "I'm going to stuff the brain inside the head cheese"

jay55 · 24/02/2022 20:58

Agree so many things that could have been done for eastenders.

On to next week.

@Ididanamechange mostly nothing makes sense this year which is a shame because usually you can get it, I wonder if they gave them too broad a range, that Pride and Prejudice dish really got on my nerves, lovely as it may have tasted it's primarily a book not a TV show....aarrghhh!

Yeah he could have done that dish but for Downton Abbey. That was hugely successful, featured lots of well know British actors, it would have really worked for as a brief

Ididanamechange · 24/02/2022 21:32

I'm also missing Ruth and Roberta from the last couple of years. And the really nice chef from last year who had a really good fish course. I think he was from Cornwall

iklboo · 24/02/2022 22:49

Some of the connections to the brief are so tenuous this time round. And if I see fishfingers & custard one more time I won't be responsible for my actions.

elgreco · 24/02/2022 22:57

Been following, Spencer is brilliant. Love Andi's clothes.

RampantIvy · 25/02/2022 23:19

If Anita Dobson doesn't eat meat for ethical reasons why is she eating parmesan cheese and dishes that have gelatine in them?

knittingaddict · 26/02/2022 06:56

But Downton Abbey was an ITV production. Don't the connections have to be from BBC, hence Pride and Prejudice.

jay55 · 26/02/2022 08:00

It's generic broadcasting. They've had itv shows, someone did I'm a celeb theme.

Andi is majestic isn't she @elgreco.

If Anita Dobson doesn't eat meat for ethical reasons why is she eating parmesan cheese and dishes that have gelatine in them?

I suppose it's possible that vegetarian cheese was used for her. I hadn't noticed the dishes containing gelatine (too busy glancing at the MN thread? Blush).

I was moaning during the programme that it was mad having someone to judge who was pescatarian and, therefore, couldn't taste half the dishes, but DH rightly pointed out that there'll be other vegetarians - and, very likely, vegans - so it was interesting to see what they might be given.

However, my biggest problem with having her to judge was the way she ate.
She said she was a "picky eater". I took that to mean she was fussy, but she was also literally "picky": poking her fingers into sauces to taste them; trying to winkle out fillings with her spoon to check what they were while holding food in her hands; taking a tiny nibble of her canape so the whole thing fell apart and got over her fingers...
I presume she was scared of coming across something she didn't like, which is fair enough, but being a "picky" eater made her a messy eater and I found her quite unpleasant to watch because of it.

Newestname002 · 27/02/2022 04:57

I'm loving Andi as the presenter this series - and it looks like she's having a great time. She's an inspired choice, both from the viewer's standpoint and the chefs'.

Can't say the same thing for Anita Dobson as the guest judge though: I found her really irritating, over-picky and over particular.

Spencer was wonderful and I'm hoping he gets a dish at the banquet. 🌹

He was very impressive indeed; also really pleasant and not at all smug.
