Anyone watched the first episode ? The US Downton Abbey set in New York in 1882.

Everyone keeps calling it the "US Downton" I loved it. I think possibly even more than Downton.

I would if it really was like that then in New York ie Old Money - v - New Money and the snobbery that came with that

Just watched latest episode. Finding it a bit dull and find I’m whizzing through some of the scenes. Hope it picks up a bit.

Is that episode 2? I enjoyed that a bit more (mostly because I felt like I knew who everyone was again!) Poor Aurora, what a horrible situation to be in.

MissMarpleRocks · 02/07/2025 15:48

Yes it was. Aurora’s husband seems so cruel. Double standards- she’d be a pariah because of his actions.

Just watched the latest episode. Bertha is such an interesting character.

I'm up to date! I just don't see why you would palm your daughter off to another country. You'd never see your grandkids it doesn't make sense. Bertha is a cow, I'd disown her if I was Gladys.

MissMarpleRocks · 09/07/2025 11:40

Thank goodness not just me! Although Fellowes did the same with Cora in Downton so I can’t say I’m surprised. Probably going down the Consuela Vanderbilt route.

If you also follow 'The Buccaneers' on Apple TV - although in no way historically accurate it is clear that it was quite the rage back then for failing aristocracy to chase the nouveau riche from the states to save the crumbling family seat whilst simultaneously holding their nose.

A latter day Carole Middleton tbf.

I'm enjoying it all - a very interesting old yarn that requires no element of thought/concentration when following. Line of duty it is not 😂

AcrossthePond55 · 09/07/2025 20:49

I have to say that I was so disappointed in George giving into Bertha's belief that Gladys becoming a duchess was more important than her actually loving the man she married. After all, G and B were a love match. You'd think they'd want the same for their daughter.

And Bertha's line about being a duchess would allow Gladys to 'be powerful' and 'do good' is absolute bullshit. She wants to be able to say 'My daughter, the duchess' and that's all there is to it. George is such a canny businessman, I can't believe he fell for it.

MissMarpleRocks · 14/07/2025 19:00

Oh poor Gladys. Definitely based on Consuela Vanderbilt. And poor Aurora. Both well to do but powerless. Is Gladys going to be written out now I wonder. But then the Lady Sarah character could have development. As well as berthas sister and return of the now well to do lady’s maid. And Jack and Larry 👏👏

Netaporter · 14/07/2025 20:58

I enjoyed today’s episode but watching Gladys go like a lamb to the slaughter was heartbreaking,

Loved John’s good fortune and the scenes between the chef and housekeeper.

MissMarpleRocks · 14/07/2025 21:01

I googled and $600,000 would be more than $20,000,000 today. Love Mrs Bauer! Poor Gladys even sadder than it’s based on fact. But then my cousin only met her husband when she came over to marry him, hard times.

The previews for upcoming episodes appear to show Gladys in the UK at the ancestral pile and Lady Sarah being a bit snarky about her.

youngestisapsycho · 14/07/2025 22:45

Why is Larry getting half the money?

Why is Larry getting half the money?

He and Jack are partners. Jack has the technical expertise and Larry has the connections.

& to be fair I don't think Jack would have negotiated $600,000 , given he didn't even know the denominations 😂

SenecaFallsRedux · 15/07/2025 02:25

I admit that I was quite stunned at the amount. I hope Jack doesn't let Oscar invest it for him.

MissMarpleRocks · 15/07/2025 06:32

That will be straight out of Upstairs Downstairs when Simon Bellamy invested the maid Rose’s inheritance and lost it all.

Where are you seeing the previews please?

Blankscreen · 15/07/2025 09:53

I thought it was really sad and poor Gladys sailing off to London.

I just don't understand why George would have allowed it. UK to US is far enough now let alone back then.

Blankscreen · 15/07/2025 10:02

I wonder if the Russell's will get into hot water over the dowry money.

I'm sure in an earlier episode that George thought the wedding to the duke was off so promised the money for that land/railway deals and then the wedding was on and the dowry needed to be paid.....

You are right. But I think if you watch the trailer I linked earlier, there is a scene which appears to show Larry driving a hard bargain with his father so I assume he helps him out with the clock money? But obviously because this is Julian fellows, we’ll have to go through the whole take George to the brink of bankruptcy, etc before all is well

BasiliskStare · 15/07/2025 13:02

I'm being a bit picky here but did anyone else think the skirt material on Gladys's wedding dress looked very shiny and cheap?
