I’m three episodes in, and I’m like “meh”
Not very funny and depressing…
Hate all the “box ticking “ it’s overtaking the show
Charlottes daughter can’t just be a tom boy ( which in itself would be funny ) she has to be -whatever they were saying? Transgender?
3 min “comedy sketch” about being Bi….?
Charlotte and Stanford don’t like each other?
Big wanking ..( eew)
Steve just going “eh? What?”
Carrie totally ignoring Charlottes warning about Miranda’s drinking?
Miranda’s Prof saying she was a White Saviour when trying to point out to the guard he was being unreasonable?
Everyone mentioning their age every scene?
Why would Carrie be putting herself through the embarrassment of a vulgar podcast when she’s clearly retired writing and married to a millionaire?

I’m debating whether to just imagine them, all running home from the desert where my imagination left left after SATC2 …

@TheRemotePart watch episode 4 - it's great. FWIW, I think Charlotte mixing up the person happened as she was at a distance and thought it was a school mum. I've mixed up people plenty of times (white, not black and there are a few white actresses that I still mix up). There was no malice in it and I thought they handled it very well - it wasn't a 'woke' moment but rather showed how easily this can happen, even to people with the best of intentions who don't believe they're racist and yet there likely is some element of racism that they haven't quite realised. I'm not doing a great job explaining what I mean, but I think it's handled very well.

Also, LTW then talking to Charlotte about being worried that she'd be the only white person in the room - to me that was showing us that we all have the best intentions and yet have our own biases and perceptions. None of it was preachy nor woke to me, just an insight into people and what some have to endure.

Also, I love the actress in the wheelchair - the swearing fits completely with the nature of the podcast company - it's not any kind of tokenism. Just a person (who happens to have a disability) going about her business and it was funny given how she was berating Carrie and totally forgetting Big had died!

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 24/12/2021 22:35

Racial bias in terms of visual memory is a thing, not anyone's fault. I did a module on it during a psych degree. A number of black men in American wrongly sent to death row because of an incorrect, but genuinely motivated, white eye witness.

southeastdweller · 24/12/2021 23:25

The box ticking is almost painful to watch and I find very distracting. I was cringing through the scene in the third episode where they go and watch Che's stand up. Like at least one PP I don't buy Samantha ghosting Carrie because of work, it actually feels insulting to the Samantha character and their relationship (I wonder if this was deliberate on behalf of the writers to get back at Kim Cattrall?).

Scbchl · 24/12/2021 23:28

I turned it off 15 mins into the very first episode..I thought it was terrible. They basically acted the exact same as when they were 30 and it just doesn't happen. That whole scene with Miranda and her lecturer was such faux bullshit. Then the podcast thing was so over the top. Na hated it and couldn't subject myself to any more. Kim Cattrall done herself a favour not going back.

DaisyNGO · 24/12/2021 23:31

@dundydee

Assuming she was early-mid 30s in the original series, people do not change that much in the 20 years. I'm late 30s now and cannot imagine my attitude towards social media and technology being any different 17 years from now. Based on friends, those who aren't active on social media and don't keep up with technology have always been like that since their 20s.

I don't know. I was an early adopter of facebook & instagram in my 20s (00s). I loved instagram & had quite a few followers. I've not had an account in years as I stopped using it when facebook bought it & don't have a fb account either. Never looked at tic tok.

I've changed completely between 30 and 46 and in quite similar ways probably.

Not saying it's age related. Just that 20 years is more than enough time to become a totally different person and not at all the person anyone expected me to be at this stage.

@lonsdaleshorts

Ep 4 much better. I am enjoying it but there is something missing.

The fashion is amazing though. Except Carrie’s white skirt from ep 4. Loving Miranda’s hair.

I was just thinking that skirt will be filthy!

I enjoyed the 4th episode though - I like Lisa

DaisyNGO · 24/12/2021 23:32

FWIW I am really enjoying it but I can see I'm in a minority 😂

GivenchyDahhling · 24/12/2021 23:43

How they’ve written Stanford out in Ep 4 is outrageous. I hope they go back and do something better.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 24/12/2021 23:45

Oh I'm assuming /hoping that's not it. I thought it was a letter from Big at first.

GivenchyDahhling · 24/12/2021 23:49

@JacquelineCarlyle Are you getting paid to promote AJLT? Your posts are very enthusiastic! Grin

JacquelineCarlyle · 24/12/2021 23:54

I wish @GivenchyDahhling - I'm honestly loving it but I do think it makes a difference that I watched all 6 seasons and both movies back to back before starting AJLT (over a number of days obviously!) and the characters don't seem too different to different they were.

I dislike how they spoke about Samantha, but other than that, the rest seems credible to me (in as much as SATC was ever credible) and I feel it's getting more and more into its stride as each episode progresses.

It probably also helps that I enjoy 'fluff' TV & can often be found hanging around Telly Addicts Grin

What annoyed me about the ‘comedy’ (lol) routine with the beautiful but boring Che is that a penny seemed to drop with Miranda when Che says ‘make a change’. And then she goes to a party rather than going home and playing mum.

AS IF feminist, strong, takes-no-shit, gender role defying Miranda from SATC needs some obnoxious ‘comedian’ to tell her she can be more than a mother.

I also don’t think she’d be putting up with loud sex, rude remarks and snarky comments from Brady and his girlfriend in her own home.

Watching the original in the 1990’s as a teen, it was SO refreshing to have someone like Miranda on screen. Committed to her career, unapologetically so, owning her sex life, independent and smart as hell - in a world of Charlottes on every other TV show about women, having a Miranda to look up to was incredible. So Why have they turned that amazing woman into a dippy walk over who takes shit from a teenage house guest and tolerates a sexless marriage?!

Unmerited · 25/12/2021 03:26

I’m not good at watching things that make me cringe in embarrassment for someone and I feel like I’m spending all of this doing or anticipating it.

@breatheinskipthegym

I don’t understand why people think Carrie would be this highly successful, podcast girl boss type. She never exactly set the world on fire, wasn’t a leader, and has a pattern of leaning on others. I think it fits that when she got married and lost the ‘singleton about town’ status that her column was based on, she would not have adeptly diversified - especially as her present-day character is portrayed as out-of-touch. Whilst it might fit that lead character = great career, I don’t think that fits for Carrie.
I agree with this. Carrie was always a follower - not a leader.

😂 this is so true!
AnnieSnap · 25/12/2021 14:50

Those saying Samantha wouldn’t have ghosted Carrie due to the work thing are just taking Carrie’s word for that! IRL wouldn’t you think there are two sides to every story?

maa32 · 25/12/2021 21:32

I feel like stanford wouldn't leave like that, and considering that the actor who played him passed away I thought they could've done a more respectable exit for him.

TheRemotePart · 25/12/2021 21:45

I’ve haven’t watched episode 4 yet. He leaves? I dunno. The more I hear, the more I’m just going to forget the first three episodes, and stick to the Leave Them In The Desert Plan

DifferentHair · 26/12/2021 01:37

The Stanford thing was handled so badly. I've read some interviews with the cast and producer, and the amount of thought they claim to have put into it makes it worse somehow.

The actor and his family deserved more than that.

JacquelineCarlyle · 26/12/2021 09:23

I thought it fitted - otherwise what else could they do to explain his absence other than kill the character off? I assume they want Anthony to remain a key character & given they're married, it would be odd to not have him there (at least part of the time). This way he can be mentioned in passing but he wouldn't be expected on screen & Carrie isn't going through another massive loss in her life straight after Big.

PodcastFunFair · 26/12/2021 09:37

I'm enjoying some aspects of it
I like watching how the children are growing up and their personalities- Brady is so like Miranda
Still love Harry
Really like most the new characters so much more than I thought I would
Love the Charlotte school mum scenes
Any scene with Stanford

But it's too self aware it does feel like hard work at times with the constant clunky woke references.
Its not anywhere near as funny as satc.
Biggest flaw is no Samantha and I don't think the explanation for her whereabouts fits with her character at all.

Think the producers/TV company are missing a trick however I think it would be so interesting to see a Samantha in London spin off. If Kim cattrall wasn't working with Sjp and others she might be more open to doing it? I can dream 😂

LeQuern · 26/12/2021 09:55

I cannot get past how bad Kristin Davies is. And how they’ve turned a funny character into an unappealing social climber. Awful.

Then there’s the way they’ve turned Harry into a blithering idiot who blurts out inappropriate comments - a travesty to his character.

Hate what they’ve done to Miranda. And Steve is now so reduced.

Hate the way women over 50 are being portrayed.

Love the clothes. Loved the Real Estate women.

Hate how every storyline (Harry / Cancer incoming) is being so signposted.

Will keep watching…

WaltzingBetty · 26/12/2021 10:04

Why are they all still wearing ludicrous heels?
Are heels still a thing?

JacquelineCarlyle · 26/12/2021 10:19

I would love to be able to still wear heels so I'm loving watching them still enjoy the most beautiful shoes! (I can still wear heels occasionally but sadly need to wear flats most of the time now!)
