I’m three episodes in, and I’m like “meh”
Not very funny and depressing…
Hate all the “box ticking “ it’s overtaking the show
Charlottes daughter can’t just be a tom boy ( which in itself would be funny ) she has to be -whatever they were saying? Transgender?
3 min “comedy sketch” about being Bi….?
Charlotte and Stanford don’t like each other?
Big wanking ..( eew)
Steve just going “eh? What?”
Carrie totally ignoring Charlottes warning about Miranda’s drinking?
Miranda’s Prof saying she was a White Saviour when trying to point out to the guard he was being unreasonable?
Everyone mentioning their age every scene?
Why would Carrie be putting herself through the embarrassment of a vulgar podcast when she’s clearly retired writing and married to a millionaire?

I’m debating whether to just imagine them, all running home from the desert where my imagination left left after SATC2 …

Or they could have made Nya lesbian and not bothered with the fertility storyline at all, it hasn't added anything except to act as a source of strain in Nya's marriage.

Mistressofnone · 05/02/2022 11:38

And then in the opening episode they made Nya seem too young to even be a professor as Miranda mistook her for a student.

Yep true. I've just had the feeling throughout the series that a lot of Nya's marriage problems were originally written as something Nya and Miranda would bond over, with Miranda actually discussing her problems with her marriage with Nya too. Nya and he husband's issues just seemed shoehorned in as something from another show and once I read a few weeks ago that Nixon suggested Ramirez as her lover and that if she had turned down the role the writers would have gone back to her original lover, I figured Nya was her original love interest and the writers had decided to leave a lot of her scenes as they were written even though they no longer made narrative sense.

I'd say that given how very, very unpopular Che is and the way she has potentially been written out, if there is a second season, Nya and Miranda could still end up having a sexual relationship. Miranda comes back without Che, throws herself into her work. Nya's marriage is definitely over and the two become significantly closer.

I would have really quite liked to have seen that. It just seems so much more realistic that two women with a lot in common but also very different perspectives, could have found themselves attracted to each other. And maybe very taken by surprise by it. Even if they had both completely identified as straight beforehand, I don't see why that sexual exploration of each other would have been automatically unsexy. Sexual attraction developing off the back of a close friendship could be great even if it is completely taking both women by surprise. I think Cynthia Nixon just maybe projected way too much of her own attraction and insecurities into Miranda.

VaulterTech · 05/02/2022 12:18

Found myself hating this but watching it every week so what does that say?! Also been watching satc. Miranda was my fav back then, it’s just awful what they’ve done to her character now, it’s like they’ve forgotten anything that Miranda did or said previously?! I loathe Che. Do you think they expected everyone to LOVE the character?! My eyes do not stop rolling whenever che is on screen.

I like the new characters, and thought charlottes stayed pretty true to her character. I used to love the Carrie / Samantha dynamic from the early series they were proper friends, can’t believe they didn’t get on in real life!

SugarPlumFairy999 · 05/02/2022 13:09

Not enjoying it, so cringey especially with Miranda's character becoming so annoying and selfish, poor Steve, he had a one night stand and she split up with him, got herself a new apartment, went off with carrie and co on her honeymoon to be there for her instead, made him do all that marriage counseling and guilt tripping and she does the same but it's ok??! Charlotte is just annoying and Carrie is a millionaire but living back in her old flat getting huffy with noisy neighbours? I'd be on a yacht somewhere far away from them all, should never have made a new series,Zzz

GreenClock · 05/02/2022 13:49

With Nya, I assumed that the character was 40-43, so old enough to be a senior professor but young enough to expect to conceive. The actor did look a bit too old but she is talented and had great platonic rapport with Cynthia N so it was not problematic imo. The husband was meant to be slightly younger, presumably.

TossaCointoYerWitcha · 05/02/2022 16:48

I loathe Che. Do you think they expected everyone to LOVE the character?!

Michael Patrick King has just defended Che, saying he finds the character "honest, dangerous, sexy, funny and warm" and that those who don't like her are "projecting on that character" and this "has a lot to do with what they want to have happen to Miranda in the story. It has so little to do with Che” (he alludes to 90% of relationships being like Steve and Miranda's, so people find it hard to accept she'd want out).

So... as baffling as I personally find it, yes... yes I think we honestly ARE supposed to be as enamoured with Che as Miranda is. And that we're supposed to be rooting for the two of them, as opposed to being appalled. The fact people were actually turned off by a self-proclaimed narcissist seems to have caught them by surprise.

ExtremelyDelighted · 05/02/2022 16:59

I think they've badly misjudged. Gone are the days when female viewers wanted to see strong independent female leads being swept off their feet by dangerous, sexy, unreliable and probably unfaithful lovers.

SantaClawsServiette · 05/02/2022 17:41

Honestly from seeing Cynthia Nixon talk, I wouldn't be surprised if she personally has a bit of a crush on Ramirez and that's why she pushed for them to be paired together.

That's a little creepy, in a workplace context.

I think they did. I am on Twitter for my job and the way people fall over such prize narcissists as Paris Lees and Laurie Penny makes me really roll my eyes. Because to call them out for their bullshit would mean risking being called transphobic.
NewYearNewMinty · 05/02/2022 18:24

I don't dislike Che...I can see the attraction for Miranda in a mid life crisis kind of ways she's the polar opposite of Steve in every way possible.

Perhaps he'll get together with Nya in series 2...that would be awkward!

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/02/2022 19:07

@HaveringWavering

It has been bothering me- Nya, the law professor, seemed to me to be well over 40. I just googled and the actress is 45. We’re we meant to think that she was someone that age in real life, for whom having a baby would be very unusual, and nigh impossible even with IVF unless using donor eggs? Or that the character was about 38ish? She seemed very obviously over 40 to me. That lessened the impact of the storyline for me because she seemed so from the start to be obviously clutching at straws thinking that she might conceive.

I liked SJP in it though, and would watch a new series of there were one. But I’ve just been watching a few old SATC episodes and it brought home how much better the writing was then.

I was 43 preg and almost 44 when I gave birth

Ivf but own eggs

boogiewithasuitcase · 05/02/2022 19:36

But MPK needed to develop a convincing storyline then, not just a showcase for his favourite character.

HaveringWavering · 06/02/2022 00:54

@Blondeshavemorefun so was I, also own egg IVF. Did you go on to have any more children after the age of 44? As I said, I thought Nya was new to be at least 45.

Changing the subject, what was with all the smoking? I found it weird how much of a defining characteristic they made that for Seema. We’re we meant to think it was an edgy fuck society’s expectations type thing? It made her seem like a total dinosaur. And I say that as somebody who smoked alongside Carrie the first time round.

DontWantTheRivalry · 06/02/2022 08:01

Another one here who expected the “post-it note” to be mentioned when they were discussing their worst break ups.

I also couldn’t believe what a cow Miranda was when Carrie was saying how she felt Big was communicating with her through the lamp.

When Carrie had thrown his ashes over the bridge I noticed she was standing in front of a very fancy street lamp that looked over her and at one point the camera seemed to focus on the actual light (huge, bulbous lamp) and I really thought they were going to make it flicker, or turn off and come back on again, as if you say Big was there and giving her some kind of closure message to say he wanted her to move on and be happy.

It was sooo obvious what was going to happen in that lift but it was still a nice scene.

No we stuck at one

I was forever thankful to be a mummy and have a healthy child

Don’t get me wrong if she had had any issues or special needs or downs etx wouldn’t have made a diff - have a niece who has downs and nephew with sn

But I thought was pushing my luck so we have think 4 left in freezer which we donated to medical science

Dd is 5 next month and she really was our miracle after 10yrs ttc and 4 previous failed ivf - the 5th hit the jackpot 👶🏼

bindud · 06/02/2022 09:31

I enjoyed it

readwritelove · 06/02/2022 14:20

The way I feel about this series is that it was rushed, a bit random, and only good in places - and Miranda of course became a simpering shadow of her former self - but I still really enjoyed it and looked forward to each Thursday for the next episode. I thought the fashion was as good as ever and I’m still really invested in these women. I really hope there’s a 2nd series and that the story-telling will improve. Surely from all the feedback, they will know what they need to do!

workshy44 · 06/02/2022 16:24

I just find is so implausible that Che would fall in love with this version of Miranda. She looks horrendous , comes across as a dithering old lady hobbling around. Constantly seeking Che's approval ,a simpering hero worhsiping mess. No one would find that attractive, let alone someone we are lead to believe is uber popular and v v cool

I did enjoy it though, loved Carrie /Anthony and though SJP looked amazing throughout. Liked all the new characters too apart from Che

bindud · 06/02/2022 16:47

@readwritelove that's how I feel.

Kitsinthehood · 06/02/2022 18:51

Reading what Michael Patrick King has said in defence of Che sounds as though he suggesting if viewers have any problem with Che its because of our own prejudices. I find that very offensive. I don't like Che because they're a narcissistic player with no redeeming features, nothing to do with any gender leanings.

vjg13 · 06/02/2022 19:52

I didn't mind Che as a member of the podcast team but didn't like the Miranda situation.

LittleBearPad · 06/02/2022 21:05

Loved Anthony in it. Much more than in SATC

LemonCake79 · 06/02/2022 21:52

Agree Antony has been brilliant.

Loved the final scene.

Miranda beyond awful and just not believable at all. Everything I loved about her in SATC is gone.

None of them have Kim's comic timing and facial expressions though. Just been watching the episode in SATC where she breaks up with James. The camera just loves her. She can do serious too. Loved the scenes with Richard 'dirty martini; dirty bastard' and her breast cancer storyline was so well acted. Just love her.

HelloBunny · 06/02/2022 23:24

I didn’t buy the Che & Miranda romance either. Che is quite attractive, and could get plenty on action (if that’s all she’s looking for). It should have been about the sex, not them falling in love.
Carrie scattering BIG’s ashes in Paris? No. He was a total New Yorker!
The Charlotte & Lily tampon thing was just bizarre...
Nya being so blasé about IVF (especially considering her age) didn’t really wash either. She talked about it like it was just some project she was working on...
