This was so, so badly written overall. The writers were more concerned with writing lessons to the viewer while occasionally throwing in a few jokes with no build up. Compared to the original series which even at it's worst, was tightly written and extremely witty it was an utter shambles. The writers here barely seem familiar with the characters and events from the original.
In this episode alone we had a missed opportunity from the very beginning. When the podcast trio are discussing worst break-ups, Carrie's Berger/post-it story would have been perfect. Especially as it concludes with a cop quoting it when he will reduce her charge for smoking a joint but not let her off completely. Instead she says Big died. Again.
We are supposed to care that Miranda is being so unlike herself by giving up the big internship she wanted so badly. But the first any of the viewers heard about her desperately wanting and finally landing this amazing, competitive internship is after she has already made the decision to spend the summer in California. We needed to have seen a bit of build up to that for it to actually mean anything. Seen her decide to apply several episodes ago, then last week get the internship and celebrate it. That way her giving it up would mean something narratively.
Then we have the big joke of Rock finishing her list of labels she doesn't want with 'New Yorker' and Charlotte and Harry being horrified. That was just stupid. We never see the family constantly identify as New Yorkers to the point that Rock saying that made any sense at all. She just would not have said that. This isn't Arrested Development, throwing in something random and nonsensical to be funny isn't funny.
And lastly we have Carrie's shock at learning Miranda is summering in California with Che. I know Carrie has always been self absorbed and obviously she has deep reservations about Che and Miranda as a couple. But she knows Miranda is nuts about Che. And she knows Che is moving to California. Are we really supposed to believe that one of the first things Carrie didn't think when Che said she was leaving, was to worry about how Miranda would be dealing with it. I just don't believe that Carrie would have spoken to Miranda to ask her how she was as soon as she got home from the studio.
And lastly, what kind of utter asshole was Miranda to repeatedly belittle a relatively recently bereaved woman when she talks about sensing signs from her dead husband. I'm an atheist. I believe that when you are dead you are gone and heaven is just a comforting fairy story. So do most of my friends. But if one of those friends was bereaved in the last year and started talking about sensing their loved one around them, I'd just give them a fucking hug and let them keep talking without invalidating them for finding comfort where the could. And so would the real Miranda.
