New thread for tonight. Will they have to replicate a Tunnock's product? Creme caramel? Can't think what else they might have to do.

Bloody fix. Giuseppe was no where near as good, has regularly had comments for lacking in flavour. He should have gone over Jurgen. Dd (8) and I are devastated

Annamariefl · 17/11/2021 22:03

Agree with every negative comment about PH on here, I don’t believe the other presenters like him. I thought the brief was for an elaborate centre piece, which Juergen painstakingly did, though it was conveniently ignored in the judgement - he should have done rice crispies and marshmallows too. Think I am over bake off as a result of this and will be watching something other than the final. Juergen was robbed and treated appallingly by PH but on the plus side for him - who would really want to touch that creep’s hand.

PickAChew · 17/11/2021 23:17

Its also hard to overlook Paul's complete disregard for Pru's judging, it feels incidental to him, he rarely interacts with her in any consultative sense.

I suspect this might be the reason why Mary used a natural break to leave. He acts like the big I am.

Mary's baking books are margarine heavy and I don't buy that she's a better Baker than pru but Paul's ex's assertion that he lives on junk doesn't surprise me.

user1471543094 · 17/11/2021 23:20

This has finished me with The Paul Hollywood Show.
What is the point. Jurgen deserved a spot in the final and agree with others that he didn't get through because of non-baking reasons, be it personality clash or a twist for sake of a twist. Totally dilutes the final.

And Noel and Matt can piss off too. They are so annoying when buzzing around the bakers.

loveablequalities · 17/11/2021 23:37

Gutted for Jürgen. What's the point of a technical if it doesn't mean anything in the judging? Surely being able to bake something you haven't practiced or googled even show enormous baking skill?!

SerenTarot · 18/11/2021 01:08

This was a very difficult decision.

If you take away your personal bias towards your 'favourites' and look at the actual bakes.

In the first round Jurgen was fourth. In the second round he was first. The others all did extremely well in the first round so effectively three of them were riding high as they went into the second round. Only Chigs really bombed in the technical, but did really well in the other two rounds.

The fairest thing would have been to put all four through, but that wasn't going to happen so one had to go and you are talking millimetres between the four contestants. I'm not sure how they arrived at Jurgen other than he was so consistently good from the beginning and if anything had tailed off a bit.

I'm a Chigs fan personally and so am delighted he went through although I don't think he should have been the choice to go on this performance anyway and that is being totally objective. Two of out three rounds he did brilliantly. Same with Crystelle.

It was between Guiseppe and Jurgen to go in my opinion on this particular bake and I personally would have opted for the former rather than the latter, but there was very little to choose between them.

I don’t agree. Jurgen had three strong rounds, it was only Paul who picked at his signature, Prue liked it.

Signature - Prue wasn’t keen on Crystelle’s bake

Technical - Chig’s melted off the plate

Showstopper - Giuseppe described as flavourless

I could understand any of the other 3 leaving, but Jurgen was consistent throughout.

Lumilly · 18/11/2021 05:04

@PepeSilviaDoesNotExist

I hate Paul’s dramatic performance of looking dissatisfied with the bake and then saying he loves it. It’s so boring and predictable.

I also dislike how he criticises some people and let’s it slide with others.

I hate the handshake and the theatrics from the bakers.

I feel like Paul’s overstayed his welcome and he was just mean to Jurgen throughout. As a PP said he didn’t seem to like him.

Typing this I’m thinking maybe I’m just not as into the bake off as I once was. Or maybe I’m just over Paul Hollywood and his hype

I've only just watched it and am flabbergasted.

I don't think I will bother with the final and I hope everyone else boycotts it too. The others are good but Jurgen has been perfect throughout.

Paul doesn't like him as he is a better baker than sleazy Paul.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 18/11/2021 07:02

@SerenTarot Jurgen wasn't fourth in the first round - unless Paul's view officially holds more weight than Pru's. Pru really loved his bake, and didn't rate Crystelle's. That's why it was so unfair, after the technical Jurgen was actually the front runner. I hope Pru really fought for him in the decision making that we conveniently didn't get to see Hmm

MaggieFS · 18/11/2021 08:03

@RockallMalinHebrides Very well put.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 18/11/2021 17:45

Paul has been worse than usual this year. Gutted for Jurgen.

Agree with everything.

Paul has a conceit bigger than his backside, sleazes over the pretty female bakers, is jealous of the men who are better than he is and is, all in all, and ARSE!

Noel and Matt are an embarrassment, they are so juvenile in their behaviour.

Prue can have some snitty moments but is the best of an otherwise bad bunch.

I don't know whether I'll watch the final or not. I do like Guiseppe and Chigs (Crystelle emotes a bit much) and would like to see who triumphs, though I may just wait and see the results online.

But I won't be watching next year.

EdgeOfTheSky · 19/11/2021 10:20

Masterchef put three through last night instead of two, because they were all deserving.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 19/11/2021 20:42

Jurgen on Extra Slice is just lovely. I want to cry for him!

BakeOffRewatch · 19/11/2021 20:49

I know, how can anyone think he’s unkind! So soft spoken.

When he said how emotional receiving the handshake was, it made the lack of handshake even worse - must have been horrible. PP is right, just downright bullying.

I laughed so much at “it is a fly”!

CarrotSticks19 · 19/11/2021 21:15

I could cope with paul hollywoods ego if he was fair in his judging

But this isnt the first time a male baker Pauls jealous of has gone out early, its not the first series hes simpered over a woman 30 years younber than him.

Its all a power play for paul. He knows Jurgen was better than him and it made him feel insecure so he showed him whose boss. Hes a nasty man amd honeslty Im just sick of him ruining the show time after time. Last series of bake off for me and I wont be watching the final

longwayoff · 19/11/2021 23:22

Jurgen doesn't watch tv and I suspect he was completely unaware of how much deference he'd be expected to give to the tellystars and perhaps wasn't excessively reverent. Lovely man, wish him all he wishes himself. Maybe Jay Rayner will give him a slot in his jazz combo. That would show HollywoodGrin

Teaandlipstick · 19/11/2021 23:56

@CarrotSticks19 who else Paul Hollywood unfairly evicted?
I don’t like him but don’t understand why he would be jealous of other talented male bakers.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 20/11/2021 00:04

I never do this but I'm not watching the final

Don't want to give paul the ratings-if he was a mumsnet Dh we'd all be giving Biscuit and lots of LTB so Prue I hope you are reading this!!!!

TitsInAbsentia · 20/11/2021 01:37

How do TV viewing figures work these days given iplayer etc? I want to boycott but argh...I've come this far I also want to watch it! But a crap viewing figure would perhaps let the channel know people aren't happy. Maybe I'll wait and see who wins before I decide to watch it, it's usually full of filler anyway, like I don't want to know about Crystelle growing up etc etc Biscuit

absolutelynotfabulous · 20/11/2021 11:57

I've never understood the hatred of PH band I've always given him the benefit of the doubt but Jürgen? Seriously? I think this is one of the occasions where they could've put all 4 through.

I've liked all the bakers this year and apart from being not so keen on Crystelle (she overdoes the emotive "family" thing imho) I'm not rooting for anyone in particular. I will watch the final, having come this far but I think this' ll be my last year.

Cannot bear the Noel and Matt combo. Completely pointless and unfunny (I like them both I dividually).

If I were to be I awe of one of the judges it would be Prue, not Paul. IMHO she's the bigger name, has achieved more and was a household name while PH was in nappies. I'd rather a handshake from Prue any day (even though the handshake thing is a bit cringe now anyway).

Jürgen was lovely on ES last night and came across really well. He's clearly an intelligent and talented individual.

Perhaps gbbo has had its day now?

TheLikesofMe · 20/11/2021 14:38

I think it needs a re-vamp.

Get rid of Paul.

Get rid of Noel and Matt-you know it's the end when they rely too much on smutty 6th form jokes and keep Pru.

Talk about the bakes a bit more and don't introduce show stoppers that are construction challenges.

Don't shave 5 minutes of the time required, so that one or two will panic

Introduce air conditioning into the tent, instead of hoping it will be so hot the chocolate will melt

MaggieFS · 20/11/2021 15:14

@TheLikesofMe I completely agree with all of that - it would still be watchable tele, it just doesn't need to be so contrived.

loveablequalities · 20/11/2021 15:14

@TheLikesofMe

I agree. The time needs to be a bit more realistic sometimes.

I think it would be interesting to see non-European sweet treats. South America has lots of different cakes, different bakes from Asia or Africa.

More savoury bakes would be great.

Might be interesting to have a team or pair round.

A guest judge for a particular round perhaps.

It's getting a bit samey.

iklboo · 20/11/2021 22:25

@loveablequalities - brilliant ideas! I would love to see that.
